You'd swear you're hearing oboes, clarinets, strings, and brass. Saxophones have such an incredible range. They were designed to be this flexible. What vision Adolphe Sax had!
I was actually looking for that clarinet they had hidden in the back. Amazing. And the alto player's sound was beautiful, if my eyes were closed I'd swear it was an oboe. And she plays super high and sounds just like a piccolo, superb.
if i closed my eyes and didn't know this was a saxophone ensemble, i would've thought that this was any beautiful orchestra. the saxophone is such a gorgeously flexible instrument. you know it's good when you've got those good shivers. amazing
Also check out the Eastman Saxophone Project (from the Eastman School of Music, obv) here on YT. They have many videos of "war-horse" classical pieces. Have a listen to the ESP version of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring. "
I wanted to cry at least 5 times listening to this piece. I couldn’t just because of the sheer beauty alone. It warmed my heart so much... It was calming and bold. They all have beautiful tones and it’s just the best thing I think I’ve ever heard...
@@Jantsenpr777 I wondered if the body motions that seemed to be exaggerated, were being used by design to keep sections together especially as tempo changed.
Beautiful rendition of one of my favorite pieces ever. The quality of the musicians is amazing. The lady soloist gets such a marvellous tone from her instrument. Bravo, and more!
The arrangements really exploit the unique sounding ranges of the different saxes. Alto can sound like a clarinet or a French horn. Soprano like an English horn -- or a flute/piccolo, depending on the register. Baritones and Bass and Contra-bass saxes can mimic bowed or pizzicato cellos or bass violins. Truly amazing group. Dynamics, tuning, and control are top-notch. Bravo! What a treat to listen to.
Perhaps the most beautiful and moving treatment of Dvorak’s most famous symphonic movement. I hope to hear in person this wonderful ensemble in concert before I die.
As a life-long saxophonist who's studied with the world's best, this performance made me cry........enough said. "It's a shame people are taught to respect music, when they should be taught to love it instead", paraphrased from Igor Stravinsky.
Really lovely. A friend directed me here. Expected to listen to a couple of minutes to say, yes that's nice, but actually really impressive. It's just not about the saxophone. This is a lollipop of a piece, and it can be so ordinary after so many listenings, but this gets the original thrill back. I know just how hard it is to play simple music like this and still be in tune at the end. They can be enormously proud of themselves.
there is Nothing that i don't like about this band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they are so unique and professional in his or her own special way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no mistakes! no missed notes!!!! just pure and wonderful Saxaphone music!!!! that is music to my ears :D why oh why didn't i discover this sooner!?!?!? :D
I only have two questions: Who transcribed this, and when was it first published/performed (though I'll venture that 2013 is the first publication/performance date). Truly, and coming from a clarinetist who has played all six clarinet divisions (from Eefer to contrabass) and saxophones (from soprano to bass), saxophones can best capture the essence of the full orchestra better than any instrumental family -- including clarinets and strings -- and I still want to hear a full clarinet choir, a full double reed choir, a full sting ensemble capture this beautiful and essential movement in the Repertoire for comparison's sake. It is of my opinion, as a clarinetist, that a saxophone choir blends better with itself than a clarinet choir does, and still manages to upstage a string ensemble or bassoon/double reed choir. And I've heard a phenomenal (if amateur) bassoon choir perform the Finale of Tchaikovski 4 live.
Christopher Steig I don't think you can do as many things with a saxophone ensemble as a string orchestra. You can mimic orchestral colors well with saxophones, if you have a lot of saxophones and if it's very choral music such as this. But you wouldn't we able to get any sharp attacks, hair-raising scales, pizzicatos etc. Strings have a much bigger variety of textures. This is a very wind and brass dominated piece, so of course the saxes are better suited to it than a string orchestra. But similarly, I don't think this ensemble could play something like souvenir from Florence convincingly.
Which pleasure to hear them to play. It's as good as symphonic orchestra.I would like to play with them. When are they in France ?Do we have this kind of saxophone band in France ?
This is amazingly beautiful, this is perfect! Strings and some others intruments missing, it would be awesome to see how it sounds with a more complete orchestra.
Arrogance on the part of Adolphe Sax and others during his time. Sax would often challenge orchestras and other musicians to play against his saxophones. These orchestras then forbade the use of saxophone in their orchestras. The Belgian Army, however, used the saxophones for their marches. This led to the Saxophone to be associated with marching bands, and consequently furthered orchestras’ distaste towards the Saxophone. Furthermore, many Blues and Jazz musicians had used the Saxophone for its ability to imitate the sound of a wailing singer. As a result of the association with both marching band and jazz, hardly any composers wrote orchestral pieces with saxophone in mind. Hope I answered your question :)
I don't know that you can say it sounds better than a normal orchestra. It has a unique sound, and so does an orchestra. One isn't better than the other.
They can be. I’ve been playing in orchestras for over 50 years and while few, there are pieces that include saxophones. I’ve been fortunate enough to play (viola) some of them with very fine saxophone players.
I wasn't watching the video while listening and I forgot they were playing saxophones. I actually had to check and make sure it wasn't a full orchestra.
John Williams should see this so he can use it more often in his pieces. If you can get this kind of tone, well, then you can imagine what he could do with it.
Very, very beautiful. The best i ever have heard. I'm also playing sax with friends, can you pleace send me the notes (sheet Music) For sopraan, alt, tenor and bariton. Thank you, greetings trom Holland.
The saxophone is capable of notes of any length, ranging from very fast repetitions, or staccato, to sustained notes for as long as you want. For the latter, circular breathing is used. They should have been a standard part of classical orchestras, but a campaign against them was waged by French clarinet manufacturers, from the 1800's until the last Century, who saw the sax as a threat to their business.
Soprano solo sounded just like an oboe. I think if one were to play this to a classical music lover, that person would swear it was a conventional orchestra playing.
You'd swear you're hearing oboes, clarinets, strings, and brass. Saxophones have such an incredible range. They were designed to be this flexible. What vision Adolphe Sax had!

No!!!!! There had to be clarinetist, violinists, oboists hiding somewhere!!!
The soprano sax soloist managed to send chills down my spine, her tone was THAT good. WOW!
She was simply wonderful- a pure delight!
Thank you Ma'am

The soloist has a beautiful tone. I would easily mistake it for an English horn had I not seen the video. great job all!
It's a shame things like this aren't happening here in the US. Bravo!
It IS happening in the US. Check out the UT Saxophone group - Holst's Jupiter and Down to the River to Pray.

We're working on it.
I think it is happening, may be you aren't paying a lot of attention to your local scene.

Amazing perfection....and without a conductor.
Actually, there's a conductor. He's playing in the first row, to the left.

The pianissimo at the very end by the low saxes...unbelievable control.
i love how expressively they move when they play, ebbing in and out, flowing and waving with the music; very impressive and expressive

The E flat saxophone ensemble, what a name!
Because Alto Rulez! Bahahahahhaaa...... = )
What they call perfect group dynamic. In sync and on time! Tonal finesse and tight articulation.
This can't get any better than already is... I am out of adjactives to define this
what happens when musicians are truly listening to each other! (those pauses in the last 3:00?? wow!!)
Beautiful rendition...thank you!

The discipline and level of musicality is almost uncomprehendable for me. I dream to perform along side a group of musicians like this.
Beautifully done! Amazingly effective and appropriate-sounding on saxophones...I love it! Bravo.
This is SO BEAUTIFUL. Finding that many people to play that is difficult by itself. not to mention that everyone seems to have such talent!
The section starting at 3:02 is amazing. 3:14 is just beautiful. I was brought to tears when the lows joined the chord.
An absolutely incredible and beautiful rendition of this classic piece. Such tenderness and sensibility! Bravo.

Alex Martin Probably a jealous English horn player.
God tier 🥺
Soprano saxophone as English horn?
As someone who has played English Horn you'd be surprised at the similar tone quality that they both have
Or as an oboe.

Where's the bass sax??😢
If you listen without watching, you'd swear this wasn't only saxophones.
The only thing that would make this better was if they did the other movements haha
Doni Tadesse Can't do the timpabi or percussion or faster strings or solo strings
SpaghettiToaster i think it'd be fair if they invited a timpani and just did whole notes for the dashed whole notes for strings

I assume there is a concert master instead of a conductor
When you have an orchestra full of saxophones, who needs any other instruments?
it would be cooler if they had a contrabass saxophone
@CrimsonSax PH They had a bass saxophone.
contrabasses sound muddy and loud really easily
English hornists and clarinetists are quaking.
anyone else get flashbacks to the beginning of halo reach at the start?
or am i insane
Damn good but aint no sax gonna replace a TUBA CHOIR bass end😂😂😂
haha very funny. now where are the basses.
the soprano's solo 1:23 sounds like the begining of lord of the ring: ua-cam.com/video/LML6SoNE7xE/v-deo.html
Why didn't they use the F Alto as the English Horn? Shame... But the Soprano still sounds amazing
Soprano sax sounds more like upper double reeds such as oboe or english horn
ah k
I think the F altos are rare
In that range for an Eb alto would make the solo sound like a clarinet.
Jacob Bass exactly
THEY DONT EVEN NEED A CONDUCTER
Omg I just realized they had no conductor....
RobinHood East the man sitting in front is
すごく綺麗。。。
ソプラノ走ってるけど緊張したのかな
who needs a conductor on a slow peice anyways
