Yes, I know I misspoke about the Leaf Stone bit at the end, but the whole "level up in a mossy area" way to get a Leafeon still works with epigenetics. The environment of "mossy" or special areas are acting as the environment triggers to UNLOCK the genetic code. Fighting in a mossy area is forcing the Eevee to evolve in that direction to improve their battle prowess specifically in those environments, hence the genes becoming unlocked.

I watched this video more than 2 years ago and it inspired me to learn more about epigenetics. I was already enrolled in a biotechnology degree in college but I hadn't decided what I was going to specialize in yet (I'm Brazil we don't have majors and minors). After watching this episode of game theory I decided to enroll in an epigenetic course that was facultative for me and later I started working at a lab that did epigenetic research.
Tomorrow I'll be presenting my final project to get my bachelor's degree. The theme of my thesis? EPIGENETIC! All because of a "silly UA-cam video about pokemon".
this deserves 40000 more likes, a guy watches a video and inspires him to get a epigenetics degree

Hey guys, did you know that in terms of human companionship, Flareon is objectively the most huggable Pokémon? While their maximum temperature is likely too much for most, they are capable of controlling it, so they can set themselves to the perfect temperature for you. Along with that, they have a lot of fluff, making them undeniably incredibly soft to touch. But that’s not all, they have a very respectable special defense stat of 110, which means that they are likely very calm and resistant to emotional damage. Because of this, if you have a bad day, you can vent to it while hugging it, and it won’t mind. It can make itself even more endearing with moves like Charm and Baby Doll Eyes, ensuring that you never have a prolonged bout of depression again.

I always thought Pokémon evolution was simply a form of metamorphosis, but this actually makes more sense since it's not tied to age.
In Pokémon Master journeys they give a brief explanation to how Eevee evolves, they said Eevee has unique genetics that are broken up with different DNA allowing it to adapt to any stone and be able to have that part of their DNA be activated. Also their was one Eevee who couldn’t evolve because they said that Eevee’s DNA was “too broken” and it wasn’t able to react to any stones.
Oh hey, Mat, next Pokemon episode explain, explain how a turtle "grows" metal water cannons?

This was the first ever game theory I watched, and what got me into this amazing community. Thank you for continuing working on all of these amazing videos, and thank you to the rest of the theorist community by extension.
Funny enough they did mention that the evolution stones produced low levels of radiation which triggered the evolutionary adaptation, some fan-made games even expanded on that.
Pokémon Uranium used the idea in such a way that if an Eevee was exposed to nuclear radiation it evolved in a similar way becoming Nucleon.
Pokémon Insurgence gave Eevee a Mega Evolution which blocked off the effect of the stones, but in exchanged unlocked it's ability to activate the genes and change forms at will.
My father, Yi Zhang, who is a Harvard professor who works on epigenetic, just watched your explaination on epigenetics, and he has two things to say.
1.) You did a good job on making the basis of epigenetics understandable by someone who isn’t familiar with it.
2.) But, you simplified to a point where a.) DNA is not locked, it is more whether or not it is accessible by proteins b.) The environment factor does not directly turn genes “on” or “off”, but to affect cofactors that are needed for the enzymatic activities of epigenetic enzymes.
Overall, he said that you did a good job, and I agree that without your explaination, I, nor about a million other people, wouldn’t understand epigenetics at all.
*Weird gloat but understandable*
He isn’t gloating though, I think this person is on to something...
Viking ZeroOne i mean nobody starts off a sentence with describing the specific, high profile job that their father has, and giving their name(hey, just case you know a thing or two about Harvard professors, this one helped birth me), without intending to gloat. My father is unemployed. I still know this though because I have a biochemistry/molecular biology degree, and actually paid attention in class.

As if cats lay eggs lmao
Bruh lmao
driftsu Exactly. That's the point my dude XD
RIP dreams
I mean, it's not exactly as if rodents like Pikachu is based on lay eggs either. Also, in the pokemon universe, you can get Meowth eggs, so sabertooth tiger egg makes perfect sense as a tie into a real-world example. The fact that you think you're correcting him when he made a perfectly sensible analogy to prove a point just shows how over-your-head this probably went. when there's even a small chance that you're criticizing someone smarter than you, stop, think about what you're going to say, and then don't say it.

I was about to say "what if I left my pokemon at the daycare" and how it would evolve there if it wasn't exposed to harsh battling conditions. Then I realised, they _don't_ evolve when left in a daycare (which I learnt after leaving my Magikarp there until it leveled up *past* it's evolution level and soon when I picked it up, I got a buffed up Magikarp, but no Gyarodos :c ). You can, however, pick up the pokemon from the daycare *before* leveling up to it's evolution level, and then level it up to evolve by - you guessed it - battling. Good job MatPat! Another great theory.
PS: Or is this _really_ MatPat? No cringy joke before the intro? Naaaah this can't be
Except if you get it past it's evolutionary cap and feed it a rare candy without battling. Then it'll evolve without being in battle. But that is also a really specific set of events anyway
@@kayplays1998 To be fair, it could be that Rare Candies trigger the same genes within the Pokemon that would be triggered by battling, just doing it by a chemical stimulus rather than a purely environmental one. Should have mentioned grasshoppers turning into locust, that's an interesting thing that might be relevant to this video
I think they were well aware, butjust called it evolution because "My Charmander epigenetically changed" didn't have a catchy ring to it...
A bunch of game designers from like 20~30 years ago having knowledge of high-end genetics that is only taught in biology majors? I find it unlikely. I think it's a lot more reasonable that they wanted the pets to transform into stronger things and just went with a poetic license for the word evolution.
It's pretty clear that for most species of Pokémon they are doing something called "ageing". All organisms go through stages of maturity, either discrete stages or a smooth transition. Maturation does involve the expression of genes, but there's really no need to go on about epigenetics when we have a word for the phenomenon: growing up.
@@PlatinumAltaria The only real issue for that is that pokemon don't evolve just from existing. They need to level up, through battling, to evolve. It's pretty obvious that a pokemon journey with a starter, in most cases, does not take several years, but yet the pokemon is still changing.

wait this is like the iceman, the guy who doesn’t get cold in the artic, he “unlocked” the genes to stand cold, nice one mat.
Declondosus Meep idk what the hell your talking about
I believe that's more like adaptation, real evolution. If humans live in high altitudes they adapt to those conditions, resistant to cold and larger lung capacity for the thin air. The offspring that do best pass their genes on more often so the next generation has an advantage. Pokemon evolution is more like metamorphosis and epigenetics explains splits in chains, how rats can have two separate gene expressions based on their surroundings even though their DNA is the same.
@@Petrico94 i think it was a joke, the iceman was a man found dead and was oreserved in ice

Oh, so Epigenetics is like how Arctic Foxes and Rabitts change color depending on the seasens?
Possibly something like that based on temperatures? Humans have circadian (daily) rhythms, and circannual (yearly) rhythms, possibly more, and I'm fairly sure more than 2 different time keeper mechanisms have been identified. Stuff like that could also trigger annual changes. Epigenetic changes are usually meant to be long standing, potentially intergenerational changes that can occur faster than genetic evolution.
@@serrerwe Yeah the environment of an Arctic Fox would probably be able to unlock that gene

Its always a mossy rock whichever region (icy rock for Glaceon), but his point doesn't change
And thus the theory has lost all validity.
@@breakfast_pasta7923 Rather, by battling to become stronger in a grassy area, it's phenotypes of grass are expressed.
Noah Tarvin Pretty sure it doesn’t. It would just mean it would need a combination of stressed situations and a special environment to “evolve”.
It kinda reminds me of how temperature affects the gender of alligators in the egg
Triston Richards ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
WTF?
héctor de la fuente garcía Yeah, if you control the specific temperature an alligator egg is kept at, you can determine its gender when it comes out of the egg
Bro love the subtitles “keyvee” some of this have me dying 😂
so we're in agreement that this makes regional variants actual evolutions
Now we're left to wonder how and why the genetic potential to become a Gyarados was in a Magikarp to begin with.
Cause it would constantly goten the crap beaten out of it if you used it in battle thus making its evolution all the more efective
Umm, Japanese folk legend about a fish swimming up a waterfall and becoming a dragon?
Maybe it’s pretending to be stupid so ppl won’t catch it and turn it into a dragon and have it fight till the end?
Stochasticity.
Monsuco
Chinese. But yes.
If you ask me, this means Pokemon evolution isn’t explained by earth science. It obeys the law of a different universe which has a sentient creator and several gods that directly tie to natural phenomenons.
I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with the intro
Just blow on the cartridge

Yeah I know same
SaaliHealer oh really? Mine seemed fine
9:43 Love how it shows a Dragon City egg for a Flareon.
Do you have a theory on the friendship evolutions? There are some Pokémon that can only evolve when you and the Pokémon max out your friendship. Like Espeon, Umbreon, and Sylveon for example if you teach your Eevee a fairy move and then max out your friendship you get a sylveon, if you want an Espeon, just let it learn psychic moves and say no to learning fairy. Umberon, same thing, but don’t let it evolve until night.
Frosmoth, also a Pokémon that evolves via friendship, but also can only evolve at night. Is that just a magic thing? or was it a magic/science thing?
Eevee: Pikachu I’m pregnant…you’re the father
Pikachu: oh…

Lexi Ha! 😂
Must've been a lucky trainer. Odds of a given Eevee being female are 11.9%, at least as of Gen 7/Let's Go. Thanks Serebii.net, for refreshing my memory, and making my pretentious joke at least an accurate pretentious joke.

I swear to god, I don’t even think the guys at game-freak didn’t think this out before implementing the idea of pokemon evolution.
