Howdy , cool experiment, I believe you proved that both flies hunt. I think good presentation that looks like food they’re going to eat well done .. peace
I agree 100%. Thanks for watching!
Awesome video. The education you give is incredibly helpful for those of us who struggle fly fishing. Thank you for your hard work.
Thank you! I'm glad to be a help. Thanks for watching!
Pheasant tail for me!
Very good production. Beautiful day and outdoors. Nice videography.
Thank you very much!
They’re both solid patterns 🍻
100%
They are both fun to fish. Both good producers
Agreed. Thanks for watching!
Glad I watched video hare's ear will be making a bit more of an appearance on my cast
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed.
Great day. I've never caught that many in a day. Thanks
Great comparison, thanks.
Thanks for watching! You're welcome.
Great experiment and beautiful fish.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm liking the Hares ear.
The hares ear and the pheasant tail nymph are my most successful flies I've ever used wont go anywhere without them
epic b roll man nice video, gotta say i'm a pheasant tail man myself
Thanks for the compliment! I am as well!
PT should be the winner.
good video-- beautiful steam
Thank you for watching!
Like them both but I use to PT more often
Same! Thanks for watching.
You should do another one of these but with two different dry flies
That's an interesting idea. I'll probably give this a go in May/June.
Another great video with good content 👍🐟
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed.
A tie! That’s like 2 old champions going at it and fighting to a draw.😎 I had picked pheasant tail at the start of the video. Real nice fly placement on some of those tough spots on the second stream. Thanks for the video Chuck.
Thanks for watching! Yeah I thought the PT was going to win by a few, but honestly there couldn't have been a better outcome to show that both are equally as effective.
Hares ear ⚡👌🏼⚡
I actually been comparing the 2. Since the beginning of this year, pheasant tail all day, hares ears no comparison. Both wild brookies and stocked rainbows. Last 2 weeks, just the opposite. Nothing doing with the pheasant tail. Switch out to a hares ear and bam.
Yeah sometimes it's just like that. I'd say they are definitely equally as good though. Thanks for watching!
They both pull quality and quantity
For sure! Thanks for watching.
Great video! Successful day!
Thank you! It was a great day!
Pheasant tail 👌🐟
I’m predicting the pheasant tail comes out on top.
I like 'em both & often fish both! Great vid and what a good idea.
Thank you! I fish them both too, just not the hare's ear as much as the PT. haha
Great video. Beautiful surroundings. Why a 10' 6" rod?
I don't like using a 7' 6" rod for tight lining. I just feel like I can't get enough reach.
Thank you for watching!
I’m confident with both. I predict a draw?
Hey Chuck! Great video, and thanks for the shoutout. Interesting results, I think very similar to my results, basically showing it’s rarely ever just the fly, the drift and presentation are much more of an influence to the outcome. But I do like giving the fish options, like dark nymph or lighter colored nymph or an attractor color, cover the bases and get it in the feeding zone, and you’ll probably have action. Well done!
Yeah I agree. I think overall fly pattern has a lot less of an influence than we think. It definitely matters to a degree, but that degree is pretty small I believe. In my experience, when they are eating, they're eating and will mostly take anything that isn't totally different from what's drifting downstream.
Just wondering if your goin to do a hares ear tying video? Thanks
Team hare’s ear. They suggest at just about every species of BMI and several species of vertebrates like baitfish and some amphibians
Cool video, Chuck. No surprise on the outcome... both of those flies fish equally well for me. Tight lines buddy.
Yeah I can't really say I was surprised either, but I thought the PT was going to win by a few.
These videos just keep getting better and better. Keep it up!
Thank you! I'll try my best. 👌😂
I found your channel yesterday and have been binge watching your videos. Fantastic content! I love that you keep everything simple and explain the flies you use and how to tie them. Great work keep it up👍🏻🇬🇧
Thank you for the compliments! Yeah my goal is to be able to catch the most fish possible in the simplest way. Always striving to make things simpler and simpler while having fun and catching fish!
Mop fly wins!
Nice comparing pheasant tail to hairs ear. Very similar results. Both work well in different water environments. Amazing
Lovin the videos! Do you have a tutorial for this euro hares ear? Also is the pheasant tail you are using the stoned pheasant tail pattern you tie?
I don't have a hare's ear video yet, but I plan to over the summer. The pheasant tail is the pattern on my channel called "Simple Pheasant Tail Jig". The Stoned Pheasant is a similar pattern that's just buggier and bigger and I use that as a stonefly most of the time.
I highly suggest using hares ear dubbing in walts worm style . I’m a pa guy myself and it catches a lot of fish
I tie my Walt's Worms with hare's ear dubbing almost exactly like this hare's ear.
Thanks for watching!
@@Brownsylvania sent you a message on your Facebook page !
It seemed like it was more dependent on which one was on the point.
I agree. I think the take away is that they are both equally as effective when put in the right place.
Size 18 hares ear; I tie with tail, rib, body and bead, thin body. All day
I think you should try 2x ptn or 2x hairs ear to see if it's more related to point vs tag fly. It would be interesting to see those stats as well.
That's actually a really good idea! I think I might do this one at some point. Thanks for the suggestion!
My vote is the Pheasant Tail!
Just started fly fishing and never had any luck on hares ear, I’ve caught a couple on pheasant tails so far. Good video! 👍
Definitely use them both since you're just starting, but if you have more confidence with one over the other just use the one you're most confident in.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing those brookies, the colors were electric, I like the pheasant tail flies the best. Fish on brownsyvania Man
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video man. Yeah, I'm a pheasant tail guy too.
I'll take the pheasant tail everytime
Same!
I really like that intro song! What is that? Also WE WANNA SEE THE LEAD LOTUS IN ACTION!!!!
I'll have to check on the song name and get back to you.
haha I keep forgetting to give it a go. I'm going to put some in my working box right now so I don't forget.
@@Brownsylvania thank you!!
Great test!!! They are both tried and true patterns!! I still want to know how you manage to find the brown infested waters? With great populations and no stocked fish ???
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed.
Lots of trial and error as well as research.
@@Brownsylvania Question for you where do you buy your tying Materials hooks beads etc.?
From tacticalflyfisher.com for beads and hooks and most materials
Sometimes I get materials from other places though
@@Brownsylvania I just ordered from them, thanks. Still trying to improve my leader!! Thanks
No worries man! If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
At 17:15, You'd be in a world of trouble if there was a big fish taking in that hole! lol
Great video!
haha I was thinking the same thing.
Thanks for watching!
This is one race I don’t think the rabbit will win. Pheasant tail is my guess
The fly itself isn't what the fish key in on. It's the color and size. Both of those flies were similar in color and size. I would bet if you tied some in black, some in tan, and some in olive, you'd see a little more variation. Everyone thinks the fly plays a much greater roll in hooking fish. That's just an easy way for us anglers to put a band aid on our egos. I enjoyed the video, and you have a great area there for some fun small water fishing!
I agree that the fly doesn't have much of a roll compared to other factors. You said tie one in black and one in tan. These flies were almost that. One is a dark brown and the other is tan.
Thank you for watching!
Whatever is point fly 90 percent of the time
Agreed. Unless there's like a hatch or something and their feeding higher in the water, but even then the point fly still could do better.
Is the thorax a bit darker than the abdomen on your Hare's ear, or is it dubbed entirely with one color of fur? Or is the darker spot that I see on the hare's ear a wing case? Also, what size nymphs were you using?
I'm glad that you tie and use simple pheasant tails with no legs or wing cases, and that you didn't give the names of those streams. PA has 16,000 miles of wild trout water, and it's not hard to find good trout streams with just a little research.
Yeah the dark spot you're seeing is a wing case. Both nymphs were size 16.
You're welcome man! Thanks for watching. I appreciate it.
I am a hares ear guy for me they both caught fish the same but hares ear is more durable
Yeah you're probably right. The hare's ear is definitely more durable.
What net are you using?
In this video I'm using an Aventik carbon fiber net.
Hare's ear will win hands down
Im a hares ear kinda guy. Lol i know to the fish its probably not the case but to me the hares ear just looks more "buggy". But to be honest id fill my box with either of those choices and have confidence doing it. Nice day on the water and another great video. 👍
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it. That's the key here. Confidence. Most people have a preference for whichever nymph they have most confidence in whether that's because it looks more buggy or simply because they've caught more fish on one.
PTN
What size hooks are they both and what mm beads are they
16 and 2.8mm
Pheasant tail.
Hi, great video. These comparisons are great.
I just found your channel so apologies of it’s covered in another video but what is the orange line you are using and what diameter. It shows up really well on the camera.
I’ve been watching lots of euro nymph videos and on most it’s hard to see the take on the sighter.
Yours show up really well.
Can you do a hares ear vs walts worm.
I’ve always wondered how much impact the tail vs uv hotspot have.
Cheers
Thank you for the compliments!
The line is just straight Amnesia and I explain my setup in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/MWQlFI-btDk/v-deo.html
They are equally as good! The Reputation clearly dictates to Have a few of each fly in your box and in different sizes. I caught my biggest Brown during a Halloween fishing trip to West Branch Anglers and it was on a Pink Lively Legz Hares Ear!
Don’t think it will matter
I like hares ear better
Not looking good for the Kiwi
Hares ear
hi, love your videos! have you checked out the streamer pattern called the "triple threat streamer" its a reversed tied streamer with a conehead bead! i would love to see you tie this and make any variation you think might benefit! thanks!!
Hare's Ears are tied with Gold Beads and Gold Ribs. Not copper. You use copper on Pheasant Tails. They original fly is even called the GOLD RIBBED HARE'S EAR. So unfortunately we still do not know which Nymph won. In general, however, the Pheasant Tail will imitate a greater variety of insects. When it does not work, fortunately, we have the Hare's Ear to try. If you love the Pheasant Tail read it's originator's book; Frank Sawyer's classic ground breaking treatise, NYMPHS AND THE TROUT.
