    And yet, SMW has aged so much better. Sonic's main gimmick is speed, but the game punishes you for indulging in it.

      I disagree. It's funny how this is still a point of contention. I don't, personally, want to play a puzzle block game at 2000 miles an hour with a 4 button control scheme thank you very much. I would walk over coals to never play it again.

      I guess the concept was cool at the time, but yeah, the original Sonic The Hedgehog just feels clunky to play nowadays in comparison to SMW, which probably has the tightest controls of any 2D platformer to date.

      @@iwanttocomplain I dunno, the momentum feels enjoyable in a sense when running, but I feel less in control of Sonic in terms of the platforming. There is a sort-of floatiness to the way he controls in the air that makes platforming in that game seem less precise. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a really good game too nevertheless, so I'm not trying to hate on it here. I think the sequels improved on it a lot.

    At the time, Sonic seemed more fresh and innovative, but in hindsight, SMW is the more polished game, as evidenced by the changes in Sonic 2 and beyond to better work with Sonic’s identity and strengths.

    • @iwanttocomplain

      Yeah Sonic 2 improved it alot. The spin dash removed any need to build up speed. Genius. Totally worth it for every other element being the same as the first one but dumber with slightly worse everything apart from the gameplay which is identical (apart you need to get good at stopping dead as quickly as possible). Also you will spend alot of time looking at the game as opposed to playing it.
      Mario World would wins this one because there is the possibility of failure. Well, if you can not die you are doing really well.

    These are both such beloved and influential games for me, it's hard for me to choose, as I love both for different reasons.
    If I absolutely *had* to choose, probably Mario World just for the ability to save your progress and revisit levels, which is something in which I don't think is valued enough in the way it changes the at the time typically arcade-y, "get as far as you can on these lives and continues" nature of platformers into something that feels more like a full-on adventure that was made with home gaming in mind.
    All that said, this is a perspective with over three decades of hindsight, I can definitely see why Sonic won out with critics in 1991. He was fresh, shiny and new, and pushed the Genesis/Mega Drive to bold new heights, played, sounded and looked like nothing else on the platform and made the NES and microcomputers of the day suddenly feel absolutely ancient. And Mario World was a more iterative evolution on the NES titles who's overhauls and innovations were much more understated. Both would make ripples that still reverberate to this day, but no one really could have seen that in 1991.

    • @iwanttocomplain
      @iwanttocomplain 4 місяці тому

      You didn't have to choose you know. Yes, saving is the key issue here. "Shiny and new". WTF does this mean? A gimmick, is what you're implying. Pathetic. "played, sounded and looked like nothing else on the platform" you mean all games ever. Apart from it being a platform game.

    I prefer Mario World. I think Sonic makes an overall better first impression with its first two levels. However, for me Sonic loses some gas after you start the 3rd level. So the overall experience goes from great to just being a good game. Mario World on the other hand is fairly consistent in its quality throughout. The only world I don't look forward to playing is the 5th level with the quirky mysterious woods setting. Other than that it's a great game to play that I will still go back to once a year. I usually only play the first 2 levels of Sonic and I'm good.

      I'll defend Sonic as equal to Mario, though I wouldn't say better. Both games will do things like tease players with items visible somewhere onscreen, but seemingly unreachable. In a Mario game, you'd need to search for a hidden block or wait for a certain enemy to get close to bounce off it a certain way to reach it. In a Sonic game, you have to explore the level to find a different route that leads to that unreachable ledge. Sonic levels have branching paths and most have hidden ways to connect the different routes. Most people play Sonic by racing through it and miss the exploration factor. I'd say Sonic rewards exploration while Mario rewards platforming skill. And don't discount the importance of music. Sonic's soundtracks (especially 2 and CD) are great. For this specific video, I'd say SMW is better than Sonic 1, but in my opinion Sonic 2, 3, & Knuckles, and CD are all better than either SMW 1 or 2 on SNES. But I'd say 8-bit Mario games are definitely better than 8-bit Sonic, however. I do know that most prefer Mario overall, so I'm in the minority for sure.

From the more varied levels, greater amount of levels, more power-ups, secret exits, additional character play (Yoshi), and 2 player support. SMW was clearly the better game. Look at the homebrew community too, SMW has far more, and arguably, far better hacks. I'm sorry, this one is no contest. SMW wipes with floor with Sonic 1. In a sense yeah, SMW was little more than a refinement of what had already been done. But what had been done was fantastic to start-off with, it's hard to improve on perfection. @@DefunctGames True, critics have always lauded anything that seems groundbreaking as genius at the time of release. Just a video suggestion. lol

    • @DefunctGames
      @DefunctGames  3 місяці тому +1

      That's an interesting idea, I'll note that for a future video. I suppose a lot of it comes down to simply seeing something new. I know from my own experience of reviewing games, it's often easy to overlook some imperfections if a game does something that we've never seen before. That's definitely the case when it comes to Grand Theft Auto III. Sure, compared to modern GTA (or even Vice City and San Andreas), GTA3 feels like it's being held together by duct tape. But it was also something we had never seen done at that scope (and in 3D). I would argue that it created its own genre of sandbox games, something so affective that we're still feeling its impact all these decades later. It may have been buggy and occasionally even broken, but GTA3 is certainly one of the most influential games of the 21st century.

      What you meant to say was. "My favourite is..." there is only professional reviewers and if Nintendo can't spend the competition away because of the brilliance of it's competition, you know it's at least 50 times better than SMW.

    I'm surprised by this result. Considering how people feel about the two games now, I thought it would be a total sweep for Mario World. While I'm a huge Sonic fan, I personally feel Mario World is the better overall game. I really like this series, keep them coming!

      Well the two positive reviews didn't make any sense to me so I guess you understood it.

    Ehh this comparison is missing context and seems like a joke...
    The missing context is that Sega of America's 90s management staff had been establishing some type of "relationship" with Electronic Gaming Monthly Magazine and it's editors since at least late 1989 to early 1990 which is given away by the fact that EGM was first to publish a detailed tech spec comparison article that MOSTLY favored Sega around that time by comparing the Sega Genesis and the NEC Turbo GraFX 16 and then claiming that since Sega Genesis had a true 16bit CPU that it was a true 16bit videogame system which ignores that the NEC Turbo GraFX 16 had a full 16bit graphics chipset and that years later when Dreamcast and PS2 shipped, that BOTH used 32bit CPUs but had graphics chipsets with far beyond capabilities beyond 32bit.
    The other piece of the context is the fact that Nintendo of America's management staff was simply not really ready to launch the Super Nintendo in 1990... there were excuses made such as releasing Super Mario 3 in 1990 as opposed to 1989 like in Japan due to a chip shortage which did exist and affected Sega in Japan from delivering 8 megabit ROM Cartridges in 1988 and 1989 which might have cost serious cash if they were made anyway due to a huge size back then.
    Therefore the Super FamiCom and Super Mario Bros 4 Super Mario World was actually launched and released in 1990 Japan which means that EGM's editors had already imported Super FamiComs and Super Mario World copies as well as other games so by the time the official Super Nintendo launch happened in late 1991 they had already seen everything and it was Yuji Naka's Sonic the Hedgehog which was the brand new game that year.
    Add an additional context of Sega of America's management making some special deal with the editors at EGM so that they can publish a quarterly "Sega Force Magazine" while SoA was publishing Sega Visions magazine which was also quarterly and there is a clear conflict of interest because Nintendo of America's management staff were busy handling Nintendo Power Magazine and felt no need to bribe EGM...
    Therefore EGM and Sega of America's early 90s management staff means there's collusion going on... besides that it's possible that Sega of America's management staff did some behind the scenes bribes with the remaining press... but more so is the fact that EGM barely got started in 1989 with Gamepro and COMPUTER and videogames magazine wasn't all about the videogame systems so their console coverage was pretty lackluster at best.
    Therefore EGM is biased... they get paid by Sega of America's management in the early 90s until 1995 when Sega of America management didn't bother renewing their deals with EGM and the latter all of a sudden favored the Sony PlayStation... at no surprise to those of us who knew back then or figured it out

      EGM was just one of the match-ups. That's an interesting theory you have.

      The British were predisposed to be Sega fans and like I said Super Mario World was being imported by those magazines so they has beaten the game but Sonic became the new toy.
