I have been through a number of flooded fords in different cars and survived them all because...... I know how car engines work. Two simple things, air in, exhaust out. Never drive fast into water, drive slowly with very high revs. Driving slowly stops water getting into the air filter box. High revs keeps the water blocking the exhaust. On a different note I waded through shallow rivers with my Range Rover adopting the same principle in the Scottish Highlands, never got stuck.

@@tiedupsmurf The water floods into the air intake pipe and is sucked directly into the cylinders. You cannot compress a liquid so the piston can't move up, it's called hydro locking. When that happens the engine locks up solid but the car is still moving and the crankshaft still tries to turn but can't which is very likely to bend or break a connecting rod. Very expensive to repair, it doesn't always happen but some of those here were almost certainly damaged.
Most of the cars would have survived had they driven slowly and smoothly without trying to muscle their way through the water. The sensible drivers were the ones that turned away without taking the plunge!!
I always feel more sorry for the ones that ruin an old cheap car as it's probably all they can afford. The ones that ruin a brand new BMW or something, that's just amusing.

EVs are well waterproofed and they don't need to suck in air to run so paddling through water doesn't bother them unless they're exposed to it long enough and at a deep enough level for the pressure to overcome the door seals and flood the interior.
I wonder how many vehicles could have been saved if the owners hadn't instantly attempted to re-start the engine guaranteeing some bent rods and carnage.
I know most gas engines can be saved, but you can’t touch the starter and you have to pull the plugs out, and then the fun begins, oil changes all around. I would do in addition to engine, diffs, and transfer cases etc.
Not an exact science but i suppose there’s a chance you could take the air box off, remove the spark plugs or glow plugs and crank the engine over to clear the water. In some cases you would have got lucky. Then it’s oil changes etc... and back to normal with any luck. But just cranking the starter without doing that stuff first is simply destroying your engine. It’s incredible to watch but I guess if you know nothing about engines you just naturally try and re start it. If you knew about engines you wouldn’t have driven into the water in the first place...

At first the air filter clogs and doesn't let air into the engine, it stalls. But the water is in the intake already so when you start it, that's when you kill it. If it's really bad, it can happen immediately. SMH this drivers.
If it's hydro locked the most common fix is a engine swap Because chance of : bend rod damaged head Damaged valves .... So it doesn't matter what you do after you got watter in it price of a new engine stays the same If you only stalled it (no air because of waterlogged air filter) then towing is the best

Proper way to go through floods is fairly high revs but moving at crawl speed. The high revs to blow out water in the tailpipe, and the crawl speed to avoid a water buildup at the grill, which causes water to enter the engine air intake, leading to water in the cylinders, and a sure way to destroy your engine. One factor that leads to these fails is the use of automatic transmissions. Higher revs will just increase the speed. In a manual transmission, the driver can control the revs with the accelerator pedal and the speed with the clutch.
What is it with Beemer and Audi drivers? We have a few each year come to Cornwall, think for some reason it’s fine to park on the beach. They suddenly get upset when the tide comes in and they realise the German’s haven’t rated their vehicles for any form of ocean going capability.

Proper way to go through floods is fairly high revs but moving at crawl speed. The high revs to blow out water in the tailpipe, and the crawl speed to avoid a water buildup at the grill, which causes water to enter the engine air intake, leading to water in the cylinders, and a sure way to destroy your engine.
One factor that leads to these fails is the use of automatic transmissions.
Higher revs will just increase the speed.
In a manual transmission, the driver can control the revs with the accelerator pedal and the speed with the clutch.

What is it with Beemer and Audi drivers? We have a few each year come to Cornwall, think for some reason it’s fine to park on the beach. They suddenly get upset when the tide comes in and they realise the German’s haven’t rated their vehicles for any form of ocean going capability.
