  • What is that smell? It smells like an old factory. Oh wait, nope, it’s just your olfactory system. We can’t neglect one of our more scent-sitive senses. Our sense of smell not only gives us the ability to distinguish different odors, it also aids our memory and keeps us healthy. Alie Astrocyte sniffs out the neuroscience of the olfactory system and its pathway to the brain. Get your nose in this business!

    You should read Life on the Edge. You're missing exactly how odorants cause our sense of smell. There are more sense of smells than receptors in the Olfactory Epithelium. Instead of just acting as a Lock-and-Key (where a chemical fits into a receptor), there is an energy discrepancy sensor based on the chemical energy of molecules and electrons. The nose senses waves, just like the eyes and ears.

    I just want to say, i freaking love your videos! I gotta ask, you use after effects, right?

      +Elin Nova Bergman We do, in fact, use After Effects for all of our animations and overlays. The audio and video are edited using Premiere. Thank you for your support!

    That’s really interesting. But l got question. How do we recognize the good smell from the bad one. How do our brain know that. Would explain. Thank you

    Hey there! I just found out about your channel and watched every single episode. Your work is amazing guys! High quality well explained videos. The animations are really great and help a lot to drive our imagination through the explanations. I have a tiny complaint though. At least for me, the music and some sound effects are as intense as Alie's voice. This sometimes drew my attention away from the animation/explanation. Keep up the good work!

      +chapolin Hey there! Thank you for the kind words! We got complaints on some of our earlier vids, so we really dialed down the sound effect levels. So sorry about that. Are they still bothersome?

    Great video, very easy to follow along. But I have a question. I have been watching a lot of science videos lately and recently discovered that the new hypothesis for smelling is by the vibrations of molecules not the typical lock and key method. Do you know anything about this? I find this all very interesting. Thank you!

    • @neurotransmissions
      @neurotransmissions  7 років тому

      Interesting. Never heard of that theory before, but a little searching shows that the vibration theory is a bit controversial. Honestly though, there is so much about these mechanisms that is still unknown. I would not doubt if there is some combination or even an alternate explanation that we have not even explored. Thanks for watching!

      @@neurotransmissions There is a really good book on this called "the emperor of scent: a true story of perfume" by Chandler Burr. While I'm not convinced by his argument, it's a really good example of how science works (and doesn't work).
