I've been looking for this for quite some time to help make a purchasing decision. Several videos out there with way more views but yours is way more detailed on the comparison aspect not necessarily the setup though. So it was a great compliment. Thanks a whole lot for this video.
After 35 years of using PCs, I bought the M1 MBA. I love using it but as a CPA, most of my software is offered only for Windows (with the exception of Office). I am currently using the trial version of Parallels. Here are my thoughts. Right out of the gate, I wish I had purchased the 16gb version of the Air. Windows alone uses 6gb per the Activity Manager and some of the software does struggle with memory from time to time. The Mac version of Office works and I don't miss much from the PC version. The new Outlook for Mac is so much cleaner and has helped my workflow. Excel seems to work well enough and just to let you know, I still use the Lotus 1-2-3 formula structures from back in the 80's. Old dogs and new tricks, I guess. At the end of the day, I am pretty impressed with what I can get away with on a fanless, 8 gb workstation running multiple OS. Coherence mode is simply awesome for making the transition to the Mac "do-able".
I honestly hadn't realized how impact 8GB of RAM would be on Parallels, but yes it seems like it was the biggest issue. I think most can deal with the Mac version of office, it is tough for me because I rely heavily on Alt shortcuts to the ribbon. But it's pretty incredible that Office still supports Lotus formula structures even decades afterwards, on a completely different ARM instruction set nonethelesss. It is an incredible machine though and definitely one of my favorite devices I've ever used
Thank you for explaining and showing these differences. I am glad I am still keeping my 2017 Air with bootcamp and it works just as well for what I need Windows for now. Thank you!
My goodness time flies, I can't believe that Apple's switching from Intel to ARM chips, 15 years later, after the very first Intel MacBook Pro came out.
I had long thought about putting Windows on my MBA Intel so I could use it for work but I’ve never liked mixing the two uses. I ended up buying a new MBA M1 because I liked how quiet it was and they were on sale for $800, sold the MBA Intel for a great price and found a cheap $80 MBA 2013, added Windows with boot camp, used OpenCore to upgrade to Monterey and all is good. Looks like I made a good decision since Parallels doesn’t work well with the M1 while Bootcamp on the MBA 2013 works better than the dedicated Windows machine I was previously using. Here’s the kicker…the 2013 does everything I need pretty much AND I was able to upgrade the SSD which you can’t do with the newer MBAs.
they should enable linux or at least debian distros again on bootcamp . fck apple ... i really regret getting a mbp 2018 shitmachine. i was very satisfied withe the older models 2011 and 2015 but since tim is in charge everything startet to suck. i am going back to windows in our music studio too - there is too much incompatibilty and usb c crap also no legacy support whatsover... thanks apple for making me using windows again. i hate that shit.

Thanks for the video. Been using bootcamp exclusively since 2014 and decided it was time to upgrade laptop, to find out it's no longer supported on the M1/2. Parallels doesn't seem like a great alternative for full time Windows use. Not sure what to do for a new laptop.

So I have an M1 Mac Mini and recently needed some programs that could only be used on Windows so I downloaded a trial of Parallels and tried that - i got the same lag, dodgy resolution and it just didn't feel right. One good thing about parallels which was the ease of switching between 2 OS's. In the end I utilised an old 2014 i5 Mac Mini i still owned and utilised Bootcamp. It was so much better IMHO.
FYI: idk where I saw, I think Apple website, but it said that running Parallels would divide the ram, so maybe that why it’s lagging. Boot camp isn’t a problem bc it’s not sharing ram at the same time. If u want m1 & have to use Parallels, upgrade the ram, bc then 8 -> 4, 16 -> 8, 32 -> 16, etc. 8 ram is not enough to run Parallels smoothly (like this video) & I think 16 isn’t either. So this vid isn’t really accurate.
Yep I just saw that from another comment. But I wouldn't say that makes this video inaccurate. It becomes a comparison of Bootcamp vs Parallels at similar specs (8GB of RAM on each)

Parallels 17 is awful. It worked great during the trial period, but after I bought it, Windows 10 just crashes and will not boot up anymore. I have tried everything to get it to work. Do not download the Parallels Toolbox. It will lag your whole system..

@innoiso Thks for the video! I was undecided between another intel mac w/bootcamp similar to one I already have - to use on another site, thus having the same experience I'm used to - or go for an M1 iMac w/ Parallels, and your comparison helped a lot because the fluidity w/ Bootcamp running just Windows is clearly unmatched by the virtualization solution. Best regards!
Does anyone know how to download parallels to an external hd? I am trying to play steam games that are windows based but even though I download to the external, it also downloads all gigs of memory to each game onto parallels which is on my Mac M1 hd. Very frustrating. M1 only has 256gig hd vs 2tb external. Please help!!! :)
If you go into your Steam settings you can change the drive that Steam games are stored on. And then make sure Windows has access to your external hard drive
@@innoiso tried that. And it still adds it to the parallels which is stuck on my Mac hd. Frustrating. :/ lol appreciate the advice. I will keep digging. Took it to a Mac guy yesterday and he knows parallels and still couldn’t figure it out. I think it’s just a glitch or bug in parallels.
Something notable is that Macs that are still capable of bootcamp do not (currently) support Windows 11, as the even though the intel processors in Macs support TPM 2.0, Apple has not unlocked that ability (and likely won't release support for this in the future) and Microsoft has made it a requirement for Windows 11. This is unfortunate as it means the writing is on the wall for bootcamp and native windows support on Macs. I use bootcamp on my iMac Pro and it's worked great for playing video games, but wanted to see what other options there are for windows support on mac and how gaming performance would be. Unfortunately, it seems that due to limited resources being allocated for parallels and virtualization, we'll never be able to get the best performance possible. With that said, bootcamp was never a priority for Apple and drivers were mediocre at best and never unlocked the true performance the hardware was capable of. I'm hoping that parallels and driver efficiencies can bring us close enough that windows gaming with higher-end macs will be playable by most standards (not saying I need to play everything on ultra or very high, but don't want to play on bare minimum / low settings eithers). Until then, I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that Apple will allow Macs with Intel processors to support TPM 2.0, or that Microsoft will drop TPM 2.0 as a requirement in windows 11.
I did not know that point about Windows 11, I'm surprised that there's not a way to get around it. As someone who prefers the Windows experience (my critical use case is office rather than games) I wish Apple would continue to develop boot camp.
@@innoiso Yeah, you would think there is hope for windows 11 on the ARM based M1 / Pro / Max and future implementations, especially since windows 11 is built to support ARM chipsets, but it’s equally frustrating that they (Microsoft) has been so restrictive in supported architectures. I’m hoping in coming months we’ll see a solution, but if not, maybe with Apple’s recent advancements in CPU and GPU development and growing market for ARM apps we’ll see more cross platform comparability for software applications and gaming in the future!
Correct me if I am wrong, but, unless there have been recent updates, even Office is not native on Windows on Arm, let alone Chrome. So the experience is going through 2 layers, virtualization and emulation. I think even with a faster M1X or future M2, M3, etc. the latency is unavoidable.... As for bootcamp, Federighi said in an interview, it's up to Microsoft, so it's totally possible. But remember it's still Windows on Arm, there is no way to run x86 Windows on Apple Silicon
When I was using my SPX I was unable to find anything conclusive about whether it was running a native version or being emulated. I'll check again today. Either way the performance of Office on that was a lot more stable, and you saw, even the UI and Chrome performance on Parallels was worse. Do you think Microsoft would agree to Bootcamp? It means more Windows licenses (for those that pay)
@@innoiso I think they will at some point. But x64 emulation is still on beta... my guess is that they are waiting for it to be official and while that may happen anytime, my guess is that they may wait for some better ARM chip will be ready, which I doubt will come this year, which does not pale too much in comparison with Apple Silicon...
Yeah I've been trying to do a review update of the Surface Pro X but the Beta is a struggle. Hoping for a new chip from Qualcomm to save the day. I don't need M1 performance, but like i5 8th gen performance without a fan would be fine for me
@@kpaxxapk6397 I mostly disagree. Sure Apple will never overtake MS, but they can easily double their market share from 10 to 20% at MS expense thanks to Apple Silicon over the next couple of years… Developers know they have to update or give up Mac, contrary to Windows on Arm… And if they don’t it means that they software is abandonware anyway…. Personally I consider this transition from Intel one of the best things in tech… If anything it might bring even more developers to Macs… As a Windows user since the early 90s I just ordered a Mac Mini and will be buying the future redesigned macbook next year, especially if I can run some of my work apps via Parallels and Windows on Arm… I won’t abandon Windows, far from it, but Macs will complement my WIndows machines…
@@kpaxxapk6397 You continue with your groundless arguments. Your arguments work for iPads, not Macs. With an M1 Mac you can essentially do the same things you can do on an Intel Mac, other than bootcamp. Apple will announce well in advance when they remove Rosetta, so developers will be obliged to move to Apple Silicon, as simple as that. And old 32bit software is already dead, even on Intel, since Catalina. Bootcamp isn't a big deal. Even today most people use virtualization not bootcamp on Mac.... And personally I don't care for the under 1% that mainly use a mac for bootcamp, since they should have used a Windows PC to begin with (like I do). Apple Silicon will push many more people towards Macs, the exact opposite of what you believe. And again, coming from a Windows and Android guy, not an Apple fanboy

Final note beginner and coding starting with python and no experience with Lenix want to learn so is it stupid that I went straight to virtual box Kelli Lenix to begin
Great video, man. Love your work, Few questions please: - On the bootcamp side, how's the experience with switching between mac & windows on-the-fly. - Does one have to "shut down" the windows to sort of turn off the Bootcamp and go back to MacOS? or one can use MacOS & Windows Bootcamp simultaneously? - Is it possible to minimize WindowsOS (Bootcamp) into like MacOS Dock, and bring it back up when needed? or it has to be shut down and not minimized? - Are mac files accessible on Windows Bootcamp like they are on parallel? - Can I copy something on the MacOS and paste it on WindowsOS (Bootcamp) or it'd see it as 2 completely different machine? - Can I sort of "float" (smaller window) the WindowsOS (Bootcamp) on my MacOS? and if yes, can I drag a file from MacOS to drop on WindowsOS? I feel like you can probably do another follow-up video answering these questions and other questions people have raised, from this video & the topic generally. Thanks once again.
These are some great questions, and thank you for the support! Switching between Windows and MacOS on Bootcamp requires a restart, which means it is significantly more difficult to do so. Parallels is just a program, so you can switch out of it at any time. Some MacOS files are available on Bootcamp, so you can easily share files between the two OS's. Copy and Paste unfortunately do not work across the two, and neither does a picture-in-picture functionality in Bootcamp. I sold my Intel MacBook Pro for now, but if I come across another I'll definitely consider a follow-up video. Thanks again!
I use bootcamp rn on my 2019 macbook pro 16inch for gaming and it works perfectly fine, the time switching between them is probably around 20-30 seconds but that really doesn't matter in my opinion much. Bootcamp in general is MUCH better than parallels in terms of performance because it is not a virtual machine. Unlike a virtual machine, bootcamp won't run MacOS in the background at the same time, it lets you boot directly into Windows and only be running windows which is great. I am pretty dissapointed to see they don't have bootcamp on the M1 models because they have so much more power, more than double the amount of the 2019 macbook pro in some areas...
@@GeorgesonOfficial I saw a video saying bootcamp is not available because of Microsoft doing something with Quocom or something and that the bootcamp will be available at a later date. I’m trying to stay as best informed to when it’s available for the new machines.
MacBook Pro & Macbook Air have different specs, this surely would casue Macbook Pro to be quicker to start with?! Also i'm running boot camp & it is driving me crazy as i've run out of storage space as Bootcamp takes up so much space that I can't even run a upgrade on my MacBook Air.
The MacBook Pro here has worse specs than the MacBook Air. You should be able to run Bootcamp off an external SSD, which would save space on your storage
Parallels is better for an older MacBook Pro, especially a 2012 the my son uses. Trying to install bootcamp on a 2012 has been a nightmare and failure. Is parallels free?
@@innoiso Unfortunately, the only video I can see about it on your channel is 4 months ago (Windows 11 on MacBook Air) and it’s great, but it’s Parallels 16. If you could make an update about Parallels 17, it would be perfect! Please, test apps like MS Excel, Word, SolidWorks, Mathcad, AutoCAD in Coherence mode. Thanks!

is bootcamp and parallels the same thing? I have an intel Mac that I need to run windows. If I have bootcamp because I have an older computer, do I need to run parallels?
Bootcamp is a program from Apple that allows you to run Windows on your MacBook's native hardware. Parallels is a 3rd party program that allows you to create a virtual computer that you can install Windows on to. If you have an older MacBook, you should just run bootcamp. But that's not an option on newer machines
@@innoiso If I install Windows with Bootcamp, and install Parallels, will Parallels recognize Windows in Bootcamp or would I need 2 Windows licenses? Thanks
If you're using boot camp power down the laptop and when you power it back up, it should ask you which operating system you want to use. If you're using parallels, a four finger swipe on the track pad should get you back to Mac OS
Check out my newer video: "Windows 11 on the M1 MacBook Air! Making Parallels Perfect for a Windows User". Windows 11 can also be run through Bootcamp with Intel macs, there are a couple guides online
I regret removing Windows from my macbook pro. I plan to install Windows again on my old MacBook pro and this video helped me decide which one I should do. Bootcamp again looks better than parallel. Subscribed!
I will be getting a MacBook soon, still trying to decide if I should get the MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro, but I want to be able to get bootcamp, mostly because you have to pay for parallel each year.
@@nickireginebey9361but there those of us that may only need to do that every few weeks to run 1 program. Boot camp would be a better option. I don’t want to pay 100 per year just to run 1 program for about 2 hours every month. That’s ridiculous
Has there been any improvement in Windows performance on Parallels since this recording? I understand from speaking with Apple that only half of the Macbook Pro's RAM can be dedicated to Parallels. If Windows 10 requires 16 gb of RAM minimum, would that mean that I would need a 32 gb Macbook? Thanks!
Hi, really appreciate if you can share with me the specs of both laptops in this test, just to make sure I get it right for what I need in my next purchase. Thank you very much for your kind help! Have a nice day!

@@innoiso I was wondering about the memory situation. I wish I would have bought the 16GB M1 MBA for Parallels. At the time, I didn't think I would be creating a virtual machine to run Windows. It's likely the memory issue is causing some of the stuttering in your video.
I imagine the MBP has better Specs then the Air, it makes me feel like the performance would be much more similar if this was tested on two Devices with the Same Specs. It made the video a little confusing at times and I had to remind myself that when you did Comparisons. Currently I'm deciding if I wanna run bootcamp or Parallels on my MBP, if I can get away with it and similar performance I wanna do Parallels since Parallels allows me to not need to restart my Device each time I wanna use Windows Features.
The MBP has worse specs than the Air, as it is running an Intel chip. That was part of my point. Bootcamp is the best option for Intel chips (according to most) and Parallels (or virtualization in general) is the only option for the M1.
Sounds like it from other comments. I was not initially aware that Parallels could only use have of the available RAM, so it’s possible that was the biggest bottleneck.
@@niceworkmicrosoft So, whatever the total RAM amount is, Parallels can only use half?! So, I'd need a minimum of about 32 total gb of RAM to get Windows to run smoothly?
I think VMware Workstation and VMware Fusion is more professional than Parallels. VMware's other advantage is have Free version. It's Player. Available on Mac, Windows, Linux. But M1 compatibility isn't yet available.
@@farukuruc I tried to download VMware it seems complicated to register you need a company and when I clicked download it said they’re checking if I am eligible
On these laptops, boot camp is only an option for the Intel MacBook. MacBook. Boot camp is not an option for newer MacBooks with M1 chips. Therefore you have to use parallels
The answer is bootcamp. Bootcamp is free and it was everything I needed and wanted after wasting time with parallels. Just my opinion though. The video is rather informative.
this is one sided you should have compared the pro against another pro not a pro against an air pro's are known to be faster and more powerful than airs so this is not a valid experiment.
When it comes to Windows gaming, Parallels is pale compared to Bootcamp. This is why I prefer Bootcamp to play most of my PC games and run other 3d software such as 3ds Max. I'll never buy a Mac that doesn't support Bootcamp.

Parallels can run without internet also?
Yep, it's all local
What about temperature (over heat) running bootcamp vs parallel?
Should not be issue with Air (no fan)?
Thats were very helpful, thanks alot😊
You're welcome!
I tried boot camp, but my MacOS starts to slow very badly ! So now I’m trying parallels.
hows it going with parrallels? i've yet to decide on which to use for my MBP (which is due for delivery in the coming week)
I have a MacBook Mid 2017 I installed kali Linux via virtual box, Since then been have minor issues CPUs been heating up or overworking and I can’t run as many apps as I used to I try to find elsewhere but should I run Boot Camp I’m working with 256 SSD currently 50 to 60 GB available 8 MB ram, Processors in m3 core
Also the only issue is kernel task… something..I’m not currently looking at my screen any help thanks I watched this video I’m watching it again to decide whether I should use Boot Camp
Final note beginner and coding starting with python and no experience with Lenix want to learn so is it stupid that I went straight to virtual box Kelli Lenix to begin
First, this is all impressive. I think Boot camp should fare better, and it's relatively easy to set up
Hey, thanks for the video! Do you think if parallels would work any better on high spec MBP than on MBA M1?
not sure. depends on how much ram you give it. and how man cpus. etc
Yes it does. The more ram the better
In short, you need a faster Mac for parallels to make up for the extra lag
Great video, man. Love your work,
Few questions please:
- On the bootcamp side, how's the experience with switching between mac & windows on-the-fly.
@@innoiso Thanks for your response, man. Well appreciated.
@@ISmokeI Ah I see, hope they can sort that out
MacBook Pro & Macbook Air have different specs, this surely would casue Macbook Pro to be quicker to start with?!
Parallels is not free, it has a license or subscription cost
Very good and informative video. Good work.
Thank you!

parallels in a yearly / monthly sub?
Yearly
Man, has there been any substantial improvement with Windows 11 on ARM via Parallels 17? 6 months have passed since this video has been released..
I released another video a couple months ago, and I will be releasing another update soon
Thanks!
This helps me out on holding off on new computer for right now.
What would you get if you were going to buy?
@@innoiso a MacBook Air with 16gb ram and 1TB hard drive. If not Mac, then a Dell XPS. I have several programs that need windows to run but do like integration of Apple products.
@@thomasbyers9153 so, what did you decide to buy? Can MacBook Air M1 do the trick for you now and run your special Windows apps?
I have not purchased anything yet. With the 12th gen Intel chips rolling out I have waited to see how they perform in laptop. I am torn between a Macbook Pro or a framework laptop.
@@thomasbyers9153 great decision. It’s a pity, we have no ultimate ultrabook right now. Different architectures and ecosystems are dividing people.
Love the video and changes! Would u know If windows Automated Workflows work on a Mac Air M1 if you run parallels? Thanks!
Thank you! I'm not sure, I need to test it out
is bootcamp and parallels the same thing? I have an intel Mac that I need to run windows. If I have bootcamp because I have an older computer, do I need to run parallels?
Noooo...they are not the same thing. Bootcamp is actual hardware and Parallels is a Virtual machine. They're drastically different.
Thanks

hey how’s your mac running on macos Monetary ? And also how’s your experience of windows on mac ?
How to switch back windows to mac? Thanks
If you're using boot camp power down the laptop and when you power it back up, it should ask you which operating system you want to use. If you're using parallels, a four finger swipe on the track pad should get you back to Mac OS
Thank you that was great and informative video.
Thank you for watching!
Hey is there any possibility of windows 11 ever running on a mac especially the intel chips
Check out my newer video: "Windows 11 on the M1 MacBook Air! Making Parallels Perfect for a Windows User". Windows 11 can also be run through Bootcamp with Intel macs, there are a couple guides online

Go with Boot camp for sure, it's free, an easy setup, and it runs on bare metal
Can we use bootcamp on air m1
Unfortunately no, it's not possible
I regret removing Windows from my macbook pro. I plan to install Windows again on my old MacBook pro and this video helped me decide which one I should do. Bootcamp again looks better than parallel.

Any option to install Windows 10 on M1 Mac Book pro through BootCamp
Unfortunately no, Bootcamp is not available on M1 Macs
Can Parallels be downloaded on Intel Macs?
Yes, as it's just a service for making virtual desktops
But if you want performance, go with bootcamp.
Thanks!
I’d like to know as well!
Windows 10 requires 8 GB RAM minimum.
I’m running windows 11 with 6GB quite fine 🤷🏻♂️
I'm using Parallels on my M2 MacBook Air with Windows 11 and zero lag, feels like I'm running a PC on a good computer.

Bootcamp is the best option for Intel chips (according to most) and Parallels (or virtualization in general) is the only option for the M1.
have you come to conclusion whether to use parallels or bootcamp?

Windows 11 is unlikely to make a difference unless Microsoft makes big positive changes to Windows on ARM.
but parall...can't use all ram and cores? if yes then its not better than Bootcamp.
It can use up to half of your available RAM, which some other comments mention that it might be the reason for my poor performance.
i'm sure you'll gonna fix most of the performance issues you had on the m1 if you get the 16gb ram version
Sounds like it from other comments. I was not initially aware that Parallels could only use have of the available RAM, so it’s possible that was the biggest bottleneck.
That’s what I ordered, and that’s what the guy at the Apple Store told me.
@@niceworkmicrosoft So, whatever the total RAM amount is, Parallels can only use half?! So, I'd need a minimum of about 32 total gb of RAM to get Windows to run smoothly?
