@stevessmallenginesaloon I think part of the reason why this gets confusing is because when we started to put engines on thing they were now "motorized". For example, a motorcycle is a bicycle that is not human powered, so it is motorized. That is independent of whether or not is uses electricity or another fuel. motorboat vs rowboat etc...

so by my interpretation, every engine is a motor, but not every motor is an engine.

Ohhh the oil lable is a good point haha. With my experience in purchasing various types of parts many things are labled differently through the manufacturer.
Found this on an article from MIT website ask an engineer.
“The etymologies of ‘motor’ and ‘engine’ reflect the way language evolves to represent what’s happening in the world,” says MIT literature professor Mary Fuller.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines “motor” as a machine that supplies motive power for a vehicle or other device with moving parts. Similarly, it tells us that an engine is a machine with moving parts that converts power into motion. “We use the words interchangeably now,” says Fuller. “But originally, they meant very different things.”

    In my opinion...
Motor comes from the latin word MOTOR (movere) that means "that creates mouvement"
Engine comes from the French word ENGIN that means "vehicule"
So I would say that anything running with petrol is by definition using an engine because of its original use.
Anything creating movement without using petrol is a motor
By the way in French we only have 1 word for both cases : MOTEUR

You are right. Electric is a motor, Internal combustion is a engine. I think somewhere down the line people started using the word "motor" to describe an "engine".
The same as an adjustable wrench. A "Crescent" wrench is an adjustable wrench, but not all "adjustable" wrenches are "Crescent" wrenches. Cresent is the brand. The same goes for "Vice Grips".Not all locking pliers are "Vice Grips.
People use the words "freeze plugs" in an engine block, when they were never designed for that. They are actually "core plugs" used to block the holes used to release the sand when the engine block was casted in a sand mold.
Perhaps oil companies should be made aware of their mistake and make it right. Any "motor oil" commercial I have ever seen talks about how much more millage your "engine" will get if you use theirs.

A square is a rectangle, but a rectangle doesn't have to be a square. I believe the same line of thinking applies here. Motors/engines consume energy to produce power to accomplish work (rectangle). The drill uses electricity (only) to produce power and is called a motor (square). An engine does not require ONLY electricity to produce power, so it is classified as an engine, but because it consumes energy and produces power it CAN also be called a motor (rectangle).

I think they are somewhat interchangeable, but most people would not use motor for anything bigger than a car engine (ha!) and most would not use engine for most things smaller than a lawn mower. Then there is a grey area in between where either seems to fit. This is an Aussie perspective. I imagine it may vary in different countries.

disagree that your truck doesn't have a motor in it. Here is why I say that. That electric starter motor turns the engine over for it to start the internal engine. The wipers have an electric motor as does the electric windows, etc. I do agree that the power supply for the truck to move is an engine, however it takes an electric motor to start it.
I've always understood that a motor has to have a source of energy to keep it in motion.

Steve, I'll bet you a Kokanee mountain ale that your truck has more motors than you can count on one hand. Window motors, fan motors, sun roof, epas (electric power assist steering), etc. Technically, even a solenoid can be considered a motor. Cheers and thank you for sharing another fine video!

I go by the same as you Steve. Electric motor and gas is an engine. Although, I would know what someone means if the terms were interchanged. I'm from the US just FYI.

I think of it like: a motor is just a powered spinney thing, but an engine is a complete system that takes in fuel, needs to be lubricated, and may have various other odds and ends on it for cooling, converting power, etc.
So an engine is more of a system, where as a motor is more of a component, and so a motor can be a piece of an engine.

I have three electric chainsaws that operate with electric motors, also I have a gas chain saw that uses mixed fuel in it's engine. I worked for over 34 years at the local Nuclear Power Plant that used many large motors that used Motor Oil for lubrication. I prefer Motor for electrically operated equipment and engine for combustion, but there are a lot of exceptions.

"Motor" and "engine" are interchangeable for chemical powered machines (i.e. something with pistons), but when electricity powered, it's always "motor" (i.e. driven by coils).

I’m with you, its the way i was taught. it bothered me so i did the research. it appears if it is a mechanism that put something in motion it can be called a motor, which includes an electric motor and a gas powered (engine) motor. but for me if it runs on fuel of any kind, it an engine

I usually say "Electric Motor" NOT "Electric Engine".
BUT... when it comes to Internal Combustion, gas/diesel, 2 cycle or 4... Engine / Motor are used interchangeably by me.

Motor car, motorcycle, but both can have electric starter motors wiper motors? Motorised transport, let's motor on into town, keep your motor runnin' motormouth, I was motoring along down.
town etc. What gets me is the Americanism that makes electric drills (drills) the same as drill bits? (drills also!) In the UK we say bits, because they're smaller bits than the drills we put them in! Tool bits in a lathe, milling machine etc.

I agree with you Steve. I think it's a historical issue. General Motors, Ford Motor etc. Did the very first horseless carriages made by these companies run on electric motors? I think they probably did, but I didn't research it. Also a Steam Engine was a type of combustion engine, leading to kerosene and distillates then other combustible fuel engines. Ford, GM etc. kept their original "Motors" names. I could be wrong so we will wait for the experts on here to scold me.
HERE's another one, is it Dirt OR Soil? 😬

It seems that in today's English, the two words are interchangeable. However, I tend to think of a motor as electric and an engine as using gasoline, diesel, or similar fuel.

A MOTor can be anything that imparts MOTtion. To me an engine extracts energy from some physical substance to create heat, usually by burning it, and utilizes that energy to create motion. So any engine can be called a motor. But electric motors are not engines as they use electromagnetic forces.

I am an electrical engineer. I have always called a device whose motor is powered by electricity a motor. I have never called it an engine. However, like you, the terms motor or engine seem to be interchangeable for gasoline engines or motors. Don't know if there is a technical difference. I agree with you 100%.
