  • This is footage from the 1966 'The Mikado' film dubbed with a high quality 1965 stereo recording of the track.
'The Mikado' which was filmed in 1966 and released in 1967 has a quite poor mono soundtrack.
Philip Potter who plays Nanki-Poo did not appear on the D'Oyly Carte album release of The Mikado as he had left the company by the time it was recorded in 1973. However he did record this song with Sir Malcolm Sargent in 1965 for the Decca album 'A Gilbert And Sullivan Spectacular'.
I have used this recording to provide a much clearer soundtrack to this clip.
In order to synchronise it, I had to make a lot of tweaks to the video to keep time with the Sargent recording.
The film misses out on the 'song of the sea' part of the song so I have have to also edit it out of the studio recording.
Let me know if you enjoy the results and if so I may repeat the experiment for other songs from 'The Mikado' film.

As well as his singing, Philip Potter's makeup was wonderful - someone has already used the word "exquisite" & it's so apt.

Amazing to see this after enjoying Philip Potter's singing this on a recording many years ago!!...
...Anyone notice that the "sea song" section has been cut in this shortened version of the aria??

Am I losing my mind? Isn't there a third part to this song, about sailors? This is the second version of this song I've watched and they are both missing that part.

I wonder if they could ever produce a modern update with actual Japanese actors. This is a tough one because even though it is set in Japan, it's really a thinly veiled lampoon of Victorian Britain. So Japanese people don't want to be played by white people in makeup but British people see it as their story so IDK.

I like the song but an octave lower would be whole lot better.

I remember Van Johnson in the role of the Minstrel on Batman 60s singing this tune strumming a mandolin.
