This is actually the perfect example of a movie scene using humor to disarm an audience and then catch them off-guard for the shock just around the corner. CROCODILE DUNDEE is underappreciated for its great writing and directing.
one example for me how clever the writing was ,to catch the american religious audience ,was when he mentioned he'd read the bible once ,and jesus and the apostles were fishermen ,just like me .straight to heaven for me. very very clever. i smell "strop"[Hogue's dumb mate ] there ,who was very clever. they were marketing geniuses.
1986!!!???!!!???!!! Dang, time goes by so fast! This was so incredible because no one expected this kind of puppetry to be used! It wasn't a Sci-Fi or a Horror movie, so it was BRILLIANT! I think I was 23 when this came out in the theaters.
Of course-it uses the old tried and true formula-first she travels across the water to visit him in his jungle, then he relocates to the big city to visit her. In each case one of them is a fish out of water while the other is at home. Worked for Tarzan and King Kong.
I know Dundee is a fictional character. But he's a badass. How he looks, how he talks, and of course that huge bowie knife. No one else could have played him. No one.
fantastic scene made more dramatic by dundee kopping a look, braining himself on the branch, the certain death situation followed by the rescue. humour to terror to relief in 30 seconds. modern writers cant manage this in a 2 hour movie.
I've got lots of questions. 1. Why is his chest naked? Isn't it logical to cover it from insects, spiders, sun? Do they really go like this in Australia? 2. Why is she wearing swimsuit? It's synthetic and definitely not good in hot weather 3. She really going to drink this dirty water? and lots of other questions Anyway, great movie. maybe I watch it again just for nostalgia

Truth be told, a croc that big against woman her size there would be no tug-of-war struggle, either the strap breaks immediately or she is pulled in the water immediately.

In the theater this was abrupt and shocking, with the music so angelic before the croc strike. Years later, after actually witnessing a crocodile pouncing on its prey and both quickly vanishing under the water this scene is doubly frightening.
me too, didn't know much about crocs then, but thanks to all those BBC nature videos, she'd been toast in a second. A croc that big would pulll you in quick, not struggling with a canteen cord from pulling you into the drink

I believe how hard those scales are that it would take a monstrous sized knife to get through all of that. I heard a story about a crocodile or alligator got ahold of a small dog, and the owner jumped on top of the animal and started punching away on it but he said the scales on that thing felt like punching stone, he cut up his knuckles badly so he gouged out the animals eyes and it leg go but the dog died from its wounds. Amazing how powerful some of those creatures are

So she might have been able to get away before the croc drops the canteen and makes another attempt. Odd that she looked right into the camera; I thought actors weren't supposed to do that? Either it was to see the panic in her eyes better or it was a goof?

Everyone talking about the croc or the girl, I'm just concerned about the quality of the water she's using to refill her canteen. That's just begging for giardia.
I was and I am still working as a graphic designer and car wrapper. Me and my boys did the layout and realization of that crocodile shaped Audi R8 that won the American LeMans series in 1999. Final race took place in Adelaide, Audi motorsports wanted something extraordinary so we came up with the Paul Hogan inspired idea of the Crocodile Dundee R8 and they loved it all. This just as a little side story to this wonderful movie that will still be watched decades from now.
Today, he's be called a stalker for following her through the woods. Of course today, the movie would be about a female "bushman," who is in love with another female "bushman," and nobody would pay to see it.
Watching this movie as an adult opposed to a teenager I find the scene hilarious. She had no chance fighting off that crocodile, it would have pulled her in the water with no problems.😂
I remember watching this in 1994 I just turned 18 and this part was a very scary part but also I was going through something right at that time and when I saw the actress cry afterward I remember I felt like crying because it was a very emotional part and it just brings back a lot of those emotions all these years later. Life is so crazy that way.
this brings back memories when I first saw this movie from a VHS rental, and yes, right at about this part, and you know exactly which particular part, the video and sound started to just warp a bit (analog, from quick excessive rewinds) up until Dundee jumped in and saved her. I was 15 then and remember feeling so robbed of that moment, and including the rental fee, and now I get to watch this particular part of the movie again ( on 1080p) for free ........good times. I have also heard similar movie rental stories like this from the movie 'Basic Instinct' - 1992......good times.

A well done scene in a very entertaining movie. However, while I can suspend disbelief with the best of them, anyone who has seen a crocodile take prey knows she would never have survived that encounter, with or without Mick and his knife. She would have been pulled down into deep water in a second.

But it seems like it’s usually because the wildebeest, antelope or whatever pulls backwards quick enough before the croc actually grabs onto them. They do still get away sometimes though if the croc doesn’t have a great grip on them. Actually what most likely would have really happened if this scene was real was that the strap on her canteen would have snapped before she got pulled in. Crocs are so powerful…there’s no way that strap could have not not snapped.
Knowing what I know about crocs, that scene was ridiculous ! Crocs are much faster and more powerful than that ! They don’t sit still for a knife in the head, and it would’ve take that girl, not her canteen. lol.

I was 15 then and remember feeling so robbed of that moment, and including the rental fee, and now I get to watch this particular part of the movie again ( on 1080p) for free ........good times. I have also heard similar movie rental stories like this from the movie 'Basic Instinct' - 1992......good times.

However, while I can suspend disbelief with the best of them, anyone who has seen a crocodile take prey knows she would never have survived that encounter, with or without Mick and his knife. She would have been pulled down into deep water in a second.

not necessarily. In tv nature programs, sometimes Crocs fails to full pray under. Depends on how good their hold is and how much the pray resists
@@mathematics5573 Yeah crocs fail all the time actually. But it seems like it’s usually because the wildebeest, antelope or whatever pulls backwards quick enough before the croc actually grabs onto them. They do still get away sometimes though if the croc doesn’t have a great grip on them. Actually what most likely would have really happened if this scene was real was that the strap on her canteen would have snapped before she got pulled in. Crocs are so powerful…there’s no way that strap could have not not snapped.
Well, the croc was clearly more interested in the high quality water canteen than her legs.

Knowing what I know about crocs, that scene was ridiculous ! Crocs are much faster and more powerful than that ! They don’t sit still for a knife in the head, and it would’ve take that girl, not her canteen. lol.
