Someone showed me that YEARS AGO But never practised until now.... Way COOL!!! I'm enjoying that you take the time and don't TALK OVER my head with SCALE LINGO!!!!!!
Many thanks! I HATE SCALE TALK. lol I realize that they exist, but are i NO WAY NEEDED to play guitar like a pro and better than most pros. lol Glad to have here!
This is only the second video in your series I have watched. No rewinding, no pausing, ( except in the beginning to get my guitar). I am self taught and have been playing for many years (I agree tab is crap) so I guess this is the first real "guitar lesson" I have ever had. I wanted to play like my old man so he gave me an old Norma and a Mel Bay cord book and said "here you go". You have a similar "no nonsense, don't complain to me if you don't get it" kind of teaching style. You are teaching in less than an hour things that in some cases took me months or years to pick up. I applaud you Sir and look forward to more. Rock On.
Awesome my friend! That's what I like to hear. Welcome aboard and have a blast. I always want lessons to be this way, but nobody ever taught like this. So, I figured that it was time to put out some straight forward, no B.S. no wasting your time stuff. Just good stuff that you could take to right away and knock YEARS off of your learning and actually get on with PLAYING. CHEERS! Scott
Super simple to grasp too!! One of the few that spend the time showing the licks and techniques rather than fucking jawin about it. I think they all just like to hear themselves talk.thanks Scott grove
Many thanks Scott. It ain't rocket science but I needed some reference to 'get outta my head' and PLAY! I've been pentatonic-catatonic and just wanna' PLAY dammit! Have watched many of your reviews, tests and lessons and always learn sumpin' good (Elixir strings, you bet! Peavey's YOU BET!). Cheers!
I don't want to sound redundant with all these comments. but seriously, I just want to say thank you for taking the time and working on a videos. that not only explains why and why not but also shows clearly and is perfectly understandable, its really appreciated. your videos have made me a 100% better guitar player. For guitar knowledge this is where I refer to. Thanks a bunch man, keep rockin
I have a lesson on my site called "Learn Electric Lead Guitar" and it is the best lesson you'll ever grab up. All the shapes tons and tons of cool licks. No scales no tabs, none of that garbage that you don't need. If anything, go check that video out, it's EXACTLY what you're looking for.
You sir, have got the t-shirt message understatement of ALL time!! LOL Enjoyed the lesson and, as always, looking at the small portion of your GAS in the background (sorry-did that sound disgusting??). Thanks for sharing your knowledge.Your time and effort is much appreciated.
"That sounds like a hornets nest to them..." Oh that made me laugh so bad... And yeah, you are 100% right. Excellent points, super videos, thank you very much good sir. :)
Plus...totally agree about the high-speed stuff. I think it's awesome that people can do that, but tbh it does nothing for me. I prefer something played slower, but with soul. Look at BB King, not much going on in his repertoire, but it sounds awesome! Just my opinion...
Can anyone tell me where I can find that backing track? I would love to use it to practice my improvisation and techniques that I just learned from Scott.! Great lesson btw!
Awesome! That's what I like to hear! It was a good 48 minutes for me too. I can tell on this end too if it was all "WORTH IT" or if I just wasted everybody's time and mine. lol I like this one too. It's really hard to go wrong with the licks and points made in this lesson. It's just the solid meat and potato basics of lead playing that everything else is built on or comes from. FUN STUFF! Thanks again!
Thanks so much my friend! I was just getting ready to upload my phone book video. I'll have it there, but invisibile, just in case the world decides they are ready for it. lol
Hi Scott ... I know this video is 6 years old or so but I am compelled to comment. I have been dickin around with guitar since I was 20. Never got past the major chords nor learned any bar chords etc. I just decided about 2-3 months ago that I am going to dig in a learn something. i don't like going out and memorizing things and playing exactly as i remember it. I guess maybe that's holding me back somewhat. I did get lucky enough to stumble on your videos. This is the second one so far. You share a lot of stuff in your videos. I have to say I am very thankful for what you have shown us . I can honestly say I am learning after all these years of looking at the brick wall. just bought my first telecaster. I picked up a Squire Classic Vibe. Went cheap because I just spent 2000 on a Gibson Les Paul Studio about 3 weeks ago. Wife's gonna kill me :). But I just wanted to say thank you and yes someone is learning from your videos. I'm sure I am not the only one. Thank You!!
I AM MADD!!!!!! I PAID AND SPENT MONEY QUIT THE GUITAR BECAUSE THE MANY TEACHERS WOULD NOT TEACH ME THIS IN ONE LESSON YOU ARE SHOWING ME WHAT I ALWAYS WANTED TO LEARN,NOW THE ONLY GOOD TEACHER pETE WAS GETTING INTO THIS,I LEARN HOW TO DO OTHER PEOPLE SONG,BUT MR SCOTT YOU ARE SHOWING ME HOW TO DO MY OWN.TO BE ME BRENDA THE QUEEN CITY KID.THANK YOU . WHEN i get my money i plan to buy that funk stuff and other with Louise Armsrtong ''sorry my spelling suck. sick kid mis a lot of school. Mr scott i got sickle cell my hip has been replace my other one need too, and both need i need help walking. My joy was almost gone i was in a to be or not to be,but God is Great and so are you not as great as God,but I like you thank you. a year go I got back into playing my Guitar hard again. I feel music is a gift from God and it save me.thanks for doing this, this is what i been ask my teachers to teach me only Pete many another did it the rest just took my money and make me hate to play. you know Mel bay books I hate mel bay books, not the chord books sorry i keep doing this, but if you look for something all your life and you finallly fine it hay you would be happy and i think I have the right to some joy. you have a bless day and i will but you and family in my Prays.Thank you Sir
Your videos ROCK!!! I grew up across the street with a guy who would smoke out, get his Hendrix fix going and then guard everything he did so I couldn't see! This is everything I've wanted for years! Appreciate the No-nonsense approach with no sugar coating here! That little bit on 32:57 is something I've always wanted to know.. I was close..Now light the cigar!!! May your guitar never go out of tune!! (Yes, I saw that video and it helped drastically). Keep pickin and a grinnin!!! :-D
I think it's a great idea to learn the Ionian mode and all relative modes. I don't really play them all that much, but I used them - particularly the Ionian mode (the Major scale) to gain an understanding about chord construction, and theory, so that I know the rules, and how/where to break them. There's nothing wrong with Pentatonics, so long as one appropriately uses blue notes (b5) and knows which notes from the Major scale (or Aeolian mode) they can use to enhance it, and create a personal style, using those five notes as the foundation. Also, freaking avoid playing cliche' rapid fire repeating licks, ala "Freebird" and the like. It's okay to use them, just don't repeat them, over and over again. That being said, I agree with you that learning a bunch of scales, with the express purpose of being able to blaze through them, while initially impressive, quickly becomes boring, and, to my aging ears, pointless noise. Designed to impress...who? Kids that think that speed is the only thing needed to be a "great" guitarist. Speed is a tool - and not the most important one, I might add. Melody and taste are way, WAY more important than being able to run through a melodic minor scale in nothing flat. Also timbre. There's a reason why classic rock is more memorable than guys who can play blazing fast staccato runs: Because people like the songs, not the technique of the lead guitarist. I'd rather listen to Chuck Berry and Buddy Holley than modern day speedsters.
oh and I am diggin that guitar you are using that looks like glass with a spider web design in it. I believe its a telecaster of some sort. But then i'm no expert on guitars. That one is very cool!!
so the 5 was just flat! No wonder that worked! Thanks Scott. Love your videos. For your amps without a built in noise gate, you might want to add one like Boss NS-2 (after watching videos all afternoon. I'm shopping for one.) God bless brother!
Scott, I really like what you are doing here. How about some improv ideas, which might help in constructing melody lines and songwriting? Must say, have only seen a few of your videos. Thanks again.
Wow, that is a cool telecaster you are playing. I have seen a lot of reviews about different woods for tone, and I have come to believe all woods do not make a difference at all, Sound comes from the strings, to the pickups, to the amps, to your ears. So, your guitar is really cool. I have a question for you. I would like to have a telecaster with a Bigsby on it. I have a Gretsch with a Bigsby and love it, and it stays in tune. I see kits for putting Bigsby on a Fender Telecaster ... I would love to see you do a video about this and hear what think about bigsbys? I know some people saya a Bigsby is crap and do not stay in tune, but I disagree and love them. What helps my guitar stay in tune is when I put new strings on it, I put the string through the post hole, then wrap back around the post, and under the string where the string went in the post hole, and then pull back a loop over the string, and tightly back around the post for a reverse loop, then wrap string no more than 2-3 times (whew, confusing - right?). But, enough about that .... what do you think of a Bigsby on a Telecaster?
for example what's more fun to listen to acdc led zeppelin or rob chapman. I mean I'd rather whatch paint dry than listen to another stupid Dorge song. wow how many scales does that guy know but most people have fallen asleep before the end ov the song. I'd rather rok than be a boring show off 👽
I've watched a couple of your videos . I think you are a really good instructor. Very thorough and not much rambling.. scott great job very appreciative ...
reminds me of georgia n the satellites . iam not a country fan much . i mostly use rock metal blues plus my guitars are ment for rock/metal. but i see your into country scott . sounds cool. is it tuned to e-4/4 ? question are there drop tuneings for blues/country. my level of music good but i dident play all styles and i see country .blues is a clean sound for me i use clean only in a chorus sound to open a rock/metal tune
I absolutely love how you combine theoretical background with just making music. You pretty much hit the perfect combination of both worlds! Love it! Thanks so much!
What I find sounds kind of cool in a blues lick is when you bend up the G and the B at the same time and play a box around that, I think it sounds pretty cool, not sure if anyone does that or everyone does that but I discovered that myself.
scott had to ask do you own a music store/repair shop. musicican rodie how did you get to know soo many things and we are nearly same age .at what age did you start guitar?.
Worth 48 min fer sure!! 32 & 36 min. was kinda new to me. Scott, you touched on it toward the end: low and slow chords and doing the leads clean and bright. I would like to see you expand on that. Thanks for the lessons!!
This is great shit on here. Love your site Scott, a good man and teacher. Not to many like you I can say. I have a 1998 Tele 3-pu`s and it all sounds great on it. I hope the best to you man.
This is gonna help me SO DAMN MUCH! thank you scott. Also, if you absolutely dont mind, maybe a video on the Nashville Number System? A freebie if you will? Thanks for the help again Scotty. Pesce Brother!
hi scott...great lesson. something else... what is your opinion about BFTS buzz feiten tuning system? im gonna buy a Suhr with that system and want to know. thanks. moshe
I was skepical at first but even at that point I found you to be enjoyable to watch and sort of like a friend I would listen to. Pretty damned enjoyable.
Great lesson. You are correct -- rewind is your friend - and I'll be doing lots of that here. You have given me lots to work on. Thank you for posting.
i do admit, fear is why i am still a crap player. i just don't know where to go next. I'm gonna pick up some lessons for the summer break. thanks Scott.
Awesome vid Scott...I wish there had been a clone of you around when I was first learning guitar...unfortunately there were clones of others who are just like me who never really learnt how to play the basics...But now things are gonna change for me ...cause I actually LEARNT SOMETHING NEW!
Many thanks. I know what you mean. NOBODY would ever show me anything. It's like they all wanted to keep whatever they knew, a secret. I know I won't change the world, but a lick here and there gives people a little more than they had for sure. SO, happy to do my part my friend and I appreciate you taking the time to write! Happy Holidays! Scott
Many thanks Scott. This is by far, the best lead guitar lesson I've ever seen. Despite knowing the pentatonic scale, I picked up a whole lot of tricks from your video. With a little bit of practice, I hope to be playing some solos with confidence. Thanks once again.
Laud Vincent Thanks my GROOVY friend! I love it when someone finds things that they can use right away. I know you've got it in you to take this info and make it cool again by making it your own! I hope to hear you using them soon!Scott
Thanks Scott for all your videos. Just got your 64 gig lesson memory stick. From what I've seen on it so far it really ROCKS. You are on heck of a good teacher and thanks.
Many thanks Bob my friend. I know you're going to have a blast with all of that stuff. If there's ever anything else that you want me to post on here for you, just shout and I'll do my best for you. Play well and keep in touch!
If you're playing in the key of A, how do you know to play a C# or a regular C (A major has a C#)? And then when you get to the E, how do you know if you should play G# or G natural (E major has a G#)?
Either one is fair game. It's just part of the blues scale. So, it honestly doesn't matter if you play the major or minor 3rd (as you're talking about). Use both during the same song to change things up a bit.
It is an Ibanez Steve Vai signature model. Here's the scoop on it: ua-cam.com/video/egFPOB1wens/v-deo.html And....just jamming on it. ua-cam.com/video/9AIdFlrn--c/v-deo.html
Was having technical difficulties playing 'Rock and Roll' by Zeppelin.....I play the solo, and looked at many video's and tabs for that song. I like to do some improvising in my solo's, and this little lesson right here fits perfectly for that song !...The 1, 4, 5 is in many songs, I know...just thought I'd let ya know I mucho appreciato you and these lessons Scott !...Rock on, brother !
Scott, fantastic video !!! Thanks EH for sharing it. Out of ANY LESSON on UA-cam this one is by far the most helpful and informative, You have truly unlocked a secret door for me. My playing ability in solo situation went from zero to semi fluent almost imediatly.. Your are the best, and perhaps even the coolest guy on UA-cam. B.T.W That has got to be one of the coolest guitars I have seen.
Cool! 2 for 2 videos (this one and the walking bass) I cam up with something different than what you were showing before the video was over! I like the way you show all those extra tidbits. Thanks
Howdy. Yep, I did a VERY crude and goofy video on it here: ua-cam.com/video/6__ZbPPcWVE/v-deo.html If you don't want to sit through that, here's the key to it. Sit down and play like you always do...put on your strap...now, just adjust it so it fits you great while sitting and playing where it's ALWAYS comfortable. Now, just stand up. Your guitar should be EXACTLY how it is and where it is when you are most comfortable sitting down. Your wrists etc. don't hurt when you're sitting.....so, there you go. It is the guys that try to put their guitars way down low that will end up in the hospital getting many surgeries on their wrists and hands and not able to play when they "grow up". lol Cheers!
Very helpful lesson …I’m on my own learning and this lesson is giving me a great start to lead guitar. Thanks Scott!
Great to hear!
Great and simple info thanks man
excellent lesson thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is only the second video in your series I have watched. No rewinding, no pausing, ( except in the beginning to get my guitar). I am self taught and have been playing for many years (I agree tab is crap) so I guess this is the first real "guitar lesson" I have ever had. This is the best beginners lead guitar lesson you'll ever see.
Michael Wood Many thanks Michael. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Super simple to grasp too!! One of the few that spend the time showing the licks and techniques rather than fucking jawin about it. I think they all just like to hear themselves talk.thanks Scott grove
Thank you so much I've learned so much from you quickly this lesson is the key to the highway keep it up
Many thanks Scott. Cheers!
Holy shit! I love the CATATONIC! I have to use that one for sure. I'll get a lifetime worth of fun out of that one my man! LAMO!
Scott Grove you are a true guru.

Enjoyed the lesson and, as always, looking at the small portion of your GAS in the background (sorry-did that sound disgusting??). Thanks for sharing your knowledge.Your time and effort is much appreciated.
"That sounds like a hornets nest to them..." Oh that made me laugh so bad... And yeah, you are 100% right.
Excellent points, super videos, thank you very much good sir. :)
How about more info on that axe, Too?
Plus...totally agree about the high-speed stuff. I think it's awesome that people can do that, but tbh it does nothing for me. I prefer something played slower, but with soul.
Look at BB King, not much going on in his repertoire, but it sounds awesome!
Just my opinion...
BB King is the real deal. Try to copy BB, it's simply impossible.
Can anyone tell me where I can find that backing track? I would love to use it to practice my improvisation and techniques that I just learned from Scott.! Great lesson btw!
No, this is a custom made Lamond guitar. Never buy a Galveston, they are really bottom line guitars. The price on this one was $1,800.00
I've been trying to figure this stuff out for some time. You just solidified it. Thanks.
That is awesome to hear my friend. I'm glad you found something in here that was usable. Cheers!
Been playing drums professionally for 35 years, but have always been a " guitar geek ". This was very informative and easy to understand. Thank you !
It's very true. People are so much more impressed and comfortable being surrounded by (that includes music), things that are familiar to them.
I'll have it there, but invisibile, just in case the world decides they are ready for it. lol
Great job Scott; great info delivered in a down to earth, no bulls#|t presentation. Thanks for posting!

I'm glad you are enjoying this one Alan! I love 3 pickup Tele's. They should ALL come that way! Drop on in any time my friend!
Wow, 80's without being a DiMarzio......hmmmm There's the obvious EMG's and the VERY obvious, genuine Gibson Tim Shaw pickups from around 1984.

I know I won't change the world, but a lick here and there gives people a little more than they had for sure. SO, happy to do my part my friend and I appreciate you taking the time to write! Happy Holidays!
Scott
not tryin to be a smart ass,but come on you can get that lesson from him for like $4 bucks.clean out the couch quarters and buy Scott an iced tea
I bow to the maste, great lesson. How about taking this and showing how we can play in different positions not just using F shape?
I've often wondered what exactly causes the "whistling" effect while playing, is it the distortion settings ?
pinch harmonic...different use of the pick/thumb
I just happened to run into your video. And, I like it. You are a cool dude.
I agree totally brilliant can't wait to nail that n' give it shit. Greetings fae Scotland
You're the best brother. I coud watch you explain how to type the phone book.
But maybe don't really do that. ; )
I love the Tele, thanks for sharing!
Scott, as always, thanks for cutting out the BS and putting out quality stuff. Your vids are the most helpful I've ever come across.
thanks. the best, most helpfully. lead lession ever. so far.
Awesome vid man helped ALOT
You have just cleared the shit out of the way to playing lead ...
Wow.... I've never seen Dr. Groovy with short hair... Very weird.
Let's see your ax this is a guitar thing not to hear you only please listen .
Maybe the best pragmatic lesson ever loaded in the internet 🤠
I'd like to see you showcase that Lucite guitar hanging behind you. What's in it, who makes (made) it?
It is an Ibanez Steve Vai signature model. Here's the scoop on it: ua-cam.com/video/egFPOB1wens/v-deo.html And....just jamming on it. ua-cam.com/video/9AIdFlrn--c/v-deo.html
This is useful! I know simple is good.. but you just reaffirmed it. Thanks lots!

Explained in simple mans terms. Great video.
Thanks mate you helped me a lot ....
I was hooked after 60 seconds...! Ace...
Thanks very much. Very helpful.

Thank you Richard. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope to hear from you again! Play well my friend.
Scott
Great job teaching. After 50 years of playing I am attempting some lead licks. I enjoy your singing on other videos as well. Well done.
As before your awesome dude. Thanks for all that you do
Cool! 2 for 2 videos (this one and the walking bass) I cam up with something different than what you were showing before the video was over! I like the way you show all those extra tidbits. Thanks
MAN!! You really toke away all the shit part that really complecates soloing!!!! THANKS!!!!!!!! The best
Same as below, the 2nd. You were an old, long haired hippy in the 1st. And I smiled! Smiling again today... Thank you!
OH! ...and when the camera panned to view the guitar... BAM! Cool look of cracked ice. I want it for my collection
Like your style and what you're teaching! Keep it simple, I like that concept a lot.
Thanks Dude
Are there any scott grove lessons on how to play standing up? I find it very uncomfortable on my wrists and I'm not sure if my strap is set correctly.
It is the guys that try to put their guitars way down low that will end up in the hospital getting many surgeries on their wrists and hands and not able to play when they "grow up". lol Cheers!
Thank you very much. Your lessons are the best.
Can anyone tell me where I can find that backing track? I would love to use it to practice my improvisation and techniques! Great lesson btw!
Thank You GREAT lesson.
"Flat the root note"...wish I would have learned that 35 years ago. That one thing is pushing my game leaps ahead. Many thanks Scott!!!
Your videos are quite helpful, thanks man!
Jake Harvey Thanks Jake, I appreciate you checking them out!
Great lesson. Thank you !!! It aint rocket science, but you explained it perfectly. Now I need to woodshed these ideas.
