Man you are awesome. I have learned more from you then anyone else's videos. I play something different every single day. I can't wait to get home from work and get the Guitar out and put the video on that I have been watching all day at work. Thank you so much for making my dream of playing the guitar come true. You are one of the Legends that I never heard of until I found you. Thank you scott.
hello sco gro i am a 63 old man who has recently begun playing after having given up the guitar for about 25 yrs, just discovered your channel and i have had such fun watching your videos. i love the way you go against the grain dispelling myths created by large mfgrs , big box stores and less than honest teachers regarding equipment and .guitars. "dead wood needs to breathe" thank you for your lessons and keep up the great work you are doing . true believer
I had a break through tonight and I gotta thank you. Subscribed a while back because you’re a working musician, so I trusted that if I watched these videos over and over things it would eventually “click”. And, tonight they did. Thank you.
This was an extremely helpful lesson, I've been playing for about 6 months now and watch a lot of guitar videos online. I find tons that are helpful for learning songs, but this is one of the few I have seen that teaches something more. I actually learned something about playing, and writing something of my own. I also see a lot of comments saying you aren't feeling well. I don't know what is wrong but regardless I hope you feel better. Thanks Scott.
Scott, you have GREAT to the POINT videos all over your channel. I like when UA-cam randomly recommends one of your videos from last year or any other past time and I discover another GREAT post of yours. Thank you for all your free lessons and being straight up with the information. Tons of positive energy. Hope you're doing well. Regards from Manhattan NY!
Oh man Scott, I have so many light bulb moments when I watch your videos. Please keep doing what you do, it must be helping so many people de-bug the myths. This is one very greatfull Geordie fan in the UK.
The way you play is exactly the way I taught myself. My Brother in law laughs at me, he plays scale and he's good. I'm just a half decent singer/songwriter from the 60's, 70's, 80's. Thanks.
That's what I like to hear my friend. Be sure to click that link above to check out my well over 100 free lessons. They will get you where you always wanted to be. HAVE A BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!! Scott
When someone shares knowledge for free you get a good thing. You remind me of Willie Nelson Scott. You operate to your own tune but there's a certain respect for the chord as you put it. Im new to your site but I can tell you know your stuff because Ive been a Willie fan all my life and got familiar with his incredible jazz infused arrangements that Stardust album for a point of reference. My guitar experience is the old 3 cord bang out a tune on an instrument the kids left behind when they grew up. To my delight I also discovered their laptop and now Im lost in the world of UA-cam keenly interested in Finger-style blues Piedmont Country bluegrass and all manner of Americana guitar and I must say its really starting to happen and although getting that bass seamless for the blues has challenged me this old gal is well and truely getting a bit of positive feedback from the family and all of a sudden Grandma is looking very cool. So you just do what you do and keep those vids rollin as Dino would say because this old Aussie gal loves ya. I can take time out from my studies and just lose myself for half hour a day having a really good time....very good therapy too.
So I played piano for a while and I was taught my grandma. I was so in-grained with theory and what not when it came to learn and improvising I couldn't do squat! What I eventually learned is the passing tones and basically anything you want to play can sound good if done right! It was hard to break away for snappy ideas but the theory when I need it helps here and there.
Mr. Scott you are the coolest a year ago I got to into the fretboard , hey 10 years ago the best guitar teacher I every had started telling, l me learn the whole board, but didn't say why. But I saw a guy take a hand full of c chords and made a song going up the neck/down. This guy name Steve shine also push the master the neck, also the Chord Prog 1,4,5, the root tonic the other.I spent years and alot of many hating the Guitar that I love, .But I feel what you and steve is teaching is great.I feel i can write my own songs now.I learn to read, which means I can play people songs I want to do my Brenda the Queen city kid.stuff.Thank You Brenda D have a great day, I am gonna put you and your Family in my prays
Many thanks Brenda. I'm glad that you've been able to find some value in some of the stuff that the guitar community of UA-cam puts out there. They've helped me out a time or two as well. Thanks for the family prayers! I'm currently editing my trip I took back home to Indiana a couple of weeks ago and you will get to meet them and hear them thanking you all for the prayers. They don't take prayers lightly. lol I'll be sure to forward this message to them since these kind of letters let them know that some folks really do care unconditionally. Bless you.
The pleasure is all mine Sir.I am doing well Sir,thank you, just celebrated my country`s 50th independence yesterday.I am so looking forward to working with you.your concepts are exceptional. All the best to you Sir.
Hi, I`ve spent months looking at youtube footage on how to learn guitar, but in the 30 or so minutes watching your video I learnt so much more. You simplified things and it was like a light came on! so a big big thank you!! I`ll be tuning into your channel from now on, I`m not looking to be a rock star but to have fun. Cheers!
Now this is the type lesson I have been looking for. I took up the guitar again after I retired and quite frankly don't have a lifetime to learn scales, etc. Need something like this so I can get around playing blues, etc. Wish you were around here because you are such a great teacher. You are someone who really wants to help us beginners move on and enjoy playing some music. Many Thanks for these great lessons.
Many thanks my friend! Yeah, there's no NEED to go through all that stuff if all you want to do is PLAY GUITAR. Not everybody has every minute of every day and 50 more years left to figure this stuff out. So, that's why I teach the way I do, just get in there and show what is at the heart of it all and you'll be playing great in no time. I'm glad you are enjoying these! Play well! Scott
null lyte Many thanks. Many teachers seem to TRY to make it all hard on purpose. lol Lots of big words (if some of them are real words at all) that have nothing to do with simply PLAYING the guitar. Thanks for watching and learning!
Great lesson as always Scott. I've been playing for a long time and signed up for many sites; some good, some not-so-good. Your down-to -earth approach is really refreshing and easy to follow. So much content and practical usability in this one lesson.
What a great. Great great lesson. I got lucky C with a great teacher. Growing up, but I liked All the scale books. But watching Jimmy page. Live. I noticed he played the whole beck like this
Good advice Scott …I’m enjoying your lessons. Thanks for teaching this material. You are the first to put it together for me and make it seem easy…not intimidating . ❤️👍
Thanks so very much my friend! I'll take 5 friends like you over all the other people on here any day of the week! I'm glad you enjoy the stuff I'm putting out there for most to make fun of. It's much better to have few that really UNDERSTAND and appreciate my little "legacy" if you will. Thanks again and please keep in touch! Scott
it's completely true that you don't need to know many scales. i die a little on the inside when people say something like: "i think my lack of theory knowledge is holding me back". however, i don't agree that knowing them will hinder your playing. i took piano lessons as a kid, so i was taught quite a bit of theory, rudiments and harmony stuff. but honestly, just because you know it, doesn't mean you have to use or think about it. it's easy to just ignore it.
Yes, 100%. It's called the Nashville Number System. It's the most logical way to approach ANY song. It will let you know what chords will and will not show up in any given key and you don't even have to be looking at your axe to know how to hit all of the chords that are needed in the key of Eb. It's such a super simple system. I have lessons on it. It takes out every last bit of guess work and hunting for chords etc.
Thats bad ass buddy i always believe in doing. Im 58 scott picked up guitar once again from when i was a kid hoping i have nothing but fun. Thanks man.
My guitar teacher showed me this as whole, whole, half, whole, whole, etc. What you have done is put it in context for me... thanks Scott! So either way 2,2,1 2,2,1 or whole, whole, half... I now get it and can see how to work with it. Simple and to the point... sweet!
hey man thanks i have been messing with one of these things for 45 50yr an i got more out of what you have told us than the all of the years before i cant belive no one has every said anything about 2,2,1, before thanks you i cant belive this crap i am 60 and i got my first guitar 6 or 8 i have never quit trying to pick up first one thing and another thanks man
Great lesson, new to guitar, you're right 99% of tabs are wrong, learned more in this lesson than I have in 6 months, thanks for taking the time to put it out there. you rock!!! wish we was closer you're a cool guy and would love to sit down and learn from you!! Don
i can not rember how meny times i learned the differnt cords but if you don't know what to do with them you cant do anything i cant all the years i have been doing this and no one ever told me what you have Scott hey thanks DR, GROOVY
I love this. In addition to not worrying about traditional scale training, I will now feel better about the fact that I never bought one of those time-keeping gadgets that all the 14 yr. old shred wanna bees have.
Thanks for the great lesson, Scott! Just getting back into playing after a long hiatus and your free lessons are awesome! I've learned more from just a couple of those than I did in years of reading books and watching other "teachers". I do believe I'll be ordering the pay lessons soon...as soon as I can show the little lady how much I've learned in such a short span! Thanks again, man!
A great lesson, and a 'freebie' too; you're a generous dude thank you. However, I have to say I enjoyed learning about Scales and Modes; got a lot of fun from them, and in their own way helped me learn the locations of notes across the fret-board.
Thanks man, this is how I taught myself on my own. I was always right. Good to see another guy who thinks the same. This is the easiest way to learn melodies and harmonies too. Good stuff so right. Hey Nashville! So it is Eddie
Thanks! Scott. (I just signed into your website lessons, and also ordered the Flash-drive lesson). I really like your sense of humor, and, gut-level approach, (and emphasis on 'practical knowledge', and to learn your way by 'feeling' your way along). Though, ...I do think that (is why) so many would be guitar players 'give up', because we actually need to have someone just show us some of the 'basics', such as; how to play some very useful little chord progressions, strumming patterns, and even 'scale patterns' (Major and minor pentatonic, etc). I'd like to see some short lessons on how to find/extract the proper chords to play along with some simple melodies, and perhaps some musical examples of how to create some of the common/useful 'bridges' used in good tunes. Once we can have a few tools in our toolbox, we can start to build upon that foundation! Thanks for such Great advice! ; D
WordsandMusic Mission accomplished! That's what I like to hear my friend. You gotta love it when a plan comes together. Now go play groovy music......you're one step closer than you were yesterday.
Scott - great wisdom, thanks. You're the best teacher. By the way there are some other important Modes that should be learnt, apart from the Nickolodian and the Lickalesbian. For example the Dorkian, the Friggin, and not forgetting the I-owe u-one.
Just in case you may see this, I just wanted to say unto you "Thank's Captain", I'm working on my guitar neck right now. Lacquer and wet sanding. To be honest I really still cannot understand the whole thing, but some how it seem's to fit some way. As you can read I'm really a beginner, just starting to understand my basic cord's. When my electric guitar was together I was to understand the Minor & Major Pentatonic scale and just could'nt understand how basic cord's fit into a pentatonic scale, I could almost the finger work in the scale, but how in hell does it fit with a E or C cord? "Dude" I'm 51 year's old and alway's wanted play a electric guitar, I've mastered alot of thing's in my life but this is not going to defeat me, because I loved all kind's of music as a child, and now I wish to shine within myself and to see what I could create what is my head but right now I'm blocked by not knowing the basic's!
My pleasure. I LOVE the Mexican Fenders. I have WAAAAAAAY more of them than anything else. I've never found a need to change anything on them. Those OLDER MIM Fenders are actually going up in value. There are certain years that people like over others for some reason. Their first factory in Mexico burned down and those made there were MOSTLY all USA stuff sent down there simply to be assembled. So, they were actually USA guitars with a MIM logo on them. Good call on picking up a used one and saving some money too.
I've looked at a lot of video lessons, and only recently saw yours. This lesson is the best basic lesson I've seen. Again, you are really fucking funny.
good pre lesson ,,lesson.. mr grove sort a give a man a fish vs teach a man to fish concept. thanks for sharing all the stuff you can not get a lesson for best of luck and all blessings to you scott
Awesome my friend. I'm glad you stumbled across the lesson. Drop on back by for any others you want or visit my site (link below the video) and all of the free lessons are all in one place there for you. It makes them really easy to find. Cheers, Scott
And I'm talking about some of the greatest professional guitarists of all time, not just campfire strummers/amateurs. If a person wants to play like Satriani or Vai, all they need to do is listen to their songs and try to copy them. That's the best way to learn other people's songs/styles. That doesn't require any formal and/or studied knowledge of scales. And for the record, people can make general statements about anything that they please. Everyone has a right to express their views.
78 years old with lots of time on my hands, talking of which, they resemble bananas, but found your video very instructive, now to communicate that to aforementioned bananas.
Exactly, it's just a guitar. It's in no way hard to make music that you like on it. Just as you stated, teach the kids to play something to HOOK them on the instrument and then sprinkle in the other stuff. Gene $immons once said (about their audiences) "Give them a little of what they want and a lot of what they need".
Thanks Scott, classically trained on violin, and could only ever play was was written on a page. Began teaching my self guitar 20 years ago and avoided scales, etc. Practiced this little doe ray me method you explained and shortly after was able to play a favorite violin Suzuki method practice piece that I had always liked, but now I can play in different keys by switching strings and I know with practice anywhere on the fretboard. I think this was the door I was looking for! Thanks!
Thanks for the reality check, I have been abused by tabs most of my life. It might take awhile but my music will come out if it is the last thing I do.
Hey Scott! I just wrote a lengthy comment, but fucked it up somehow! DUH! Anyway, I'm starting over. I don't like very many people!, but, I like you!! It is very obvious that you are a seasoned/veteran musician, like, been there, done that! I am, I guess, an intermediate/wan-a-be musician. I add all of your videos to my playlist. Very cool shit! In a nutshell, I just sincerely like, appreciate & really dig your knowledge & especially, your real fucking world language! We are and have been reading the same book! Thank you for sharing your expertise/musical/real life touring, cool shit, experiences/genius (for free) with me!! I am very grateful, to say the least!! Thanks again!! K.W./ Keith Guy. Born: 1949. 👍🏻✌🏻️☮🤘🎸🤓. It's only Rock'n Roll & Country, but I like it!!
Very cool Craig! I'm glad you liked this one. I wish more folks would watch it. It really does open up a lot of locked doors for people. Thanks again my friend and play well! Scott
groovydjs - Thanks for the reply, Scott. Yes, this was the BIG piece of info I needed...as you said, all the scales and names were feeling daunting to learn...this breaks all that down to the basics of how it all works in a very easy to understand way. Great work, man...big debt of gratitude to you.
I was raised on classical music and theory, and what you're saying makes a ton of sense. If I could, I'd go back in time and kick my younger self's pretentious ass.
Obviously the pentatonic scale is a great way to start to learn how to play. The reason it works so well is that the majority of the 5 notes the scale consists of are to a large extent an arpeggio in and of itself to most of the chords in the progression. So you easily land on the right note at the end of your lick. Drawback is that because of that, solos using only the pentatonic tend to become boring rather quickly. So once you get solos using the pentatonic into your fingers it's a good idea to start branching out and become more adventurous. But never discard the pentatonic. Use it to get going then add more notes to keep it interesting. So at the end of the day it's profitable to start to learn more complex scales to spice up your soloing. You can do that by using the pentatonic as a skeleton for hanging different ideas onto.
Yup, I learned the major scale and where all the notes were on the entire 12 frets, then just moved that pattern in my head for whatever key I played too. Its the same pattern all the time, you just move it on the fret board based on what key you are in. I agree with this dude, throw the tab and sheet music away. You'll learn the pattern and eventually the notes for each string.
Man you are awesome. I have learned more from you then anyone else's videos. I play something different every single day. I know that's what you meant to do Scott, we all make mistakes especially me. Love your lessons. Keep it Groovy and Thanks.
Thanks man, this is how I taught myself on my own. I was always right. Good to see another guy who thinks the same.
This is the easiest way to learn melodies and harmonies too. Good stuff so right. Hey Nashville! So it is
Eddie
Thanks man...I've learned more in this one video than I have in the past month...
thanks for the lesson! The best part for me was the last minute or two when you lay it all out.
Thanks! Thanks for such Great advice! ; D
Very true statement right here!
I haven't tried this approach before thanks Dr. Groovy.
Great lesson Scott! Motivated me to be better. Simplified it all for me!
For example the Dorkian, the Friggin, and not forgetting the I-owe u-one.
thank you for the helpful advice, will actually start practicing more and actually learn how to play guitar instead of just thinking about it!
Gibbons hub
Awesome, the best information I have found in years and years.
Another Very true statement!
you are the best Mr. Scott
Plugging in my new to me 1999 MIM Tele to practice.... gotta start somewhere, thanks for the lesson, it was Groovy!
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to share the knowledge
I've looked at a lot of video lessons, and only recently saw yours. This lesson is the best basic lesson I've seen. Again, you are really fucking funny.
good pre lesson ,,lesson.. mr grove sort a give a man a fish vs teach a man to fish concept. thanks for sharing all the stuff you can not get a lesson for best of luck and all blessings to you scott
melodic minor is nice, dim. scales are fun for the blues, whole tone scale are fun too
Great video Scott, thanks so much! 👍👏👏😊
Nice and informative lesson and a Super nice T-Shirt ;-)
Great lesson Scott. I am just beginning.
Awesome my friend. I'm glad you stumbled across the lesson. Drop on back by for any others you want or visit my site (link below the video) and all of the free lessons are all in one place there for you. It makes them really easy to find.
Cheers,
Scott
And I'm talking about some of the greatest professional guitarists of all time, not just campfire strummers/amateurs. If a person wants to play like Satriani or Vai, all they need to do is listen to their songs and try to copy them. That's the best way to learn other people's songs/styles. That doesn't require any formal and/or studied knowledge of scales. And for the record, people can make general statements about anything that they please. Everyone has a right to express their views.
Scott!!I love the gin and tonic scale🎸
hey thanks Scott this should really help me to learn the neck like I need to keep it simple stupid thank you
78 years old with lots of time on my hands, talking of which, they resemble bananas, but found your video very instructive, now to communicate that to aforementioned bananas.
I really in joyed this lesson
Thanks Doc
🇦🇺👍🇦🇺
Your lessons are really great, thanks for taking the time
Thanks Scott, classically trained on violin, and could only ever play was was written on a page.
It might take awhile
but my music will come out if it is the last thing I do.
Thanks Grove .. needed to hear that.... love......
Lickalesbian scales! I love You man, you're à legend !

Born: 1949. 👍🏻✌🏻️☮🤘🎸🤓. It's only Rock'n Roll & Country, but I like it!!
great lesson thanks Scott.
I wish I lived near you. Would be shitloads of laughs and music played. Drums keys and guitar.
EXACTLY WHAT RICK SAID! I fully agree to the fullest extent of your wisdom my good friend!
Great lesson...that's a big breakthrough for me...wow
Very cool Craig! I'm glad you liked this one. I wish more folks would watch it. It really does open up a lot of locked doors for people. Thanks again my friend and play well!
Scott
groovydjs - Thanks for the reply, Scott. Yes, this was the BIG piece of info I needed...as you said, all the scales and names were feeling daunting to learn...this breaks all that down to the basics of how it all works in a very easy to understand way. Great work, man...big debt of gratitude to you.
Great no Bull. Learned a lot
Many thanks
Fabulous lesson.....namaste from India....
Loved this .... thanks Scott!!
Fantastic lesson Scott, thanks very much. But I'm confused about the lickalesbian scale, so would you please demonstrate it for us?
Yup, I learned the major scale and where all the notes were on the entire 12 frets, then just moved that pattern in my head for whatever key I played too. Its the same pattern all the time, you just move it on the fret board based on what key you are in. I agree with this dude, throw the tab and sheet music away. You'll learn the pattern and eventually the notes for each string.
Hey!!! Thank You for What you do !!!!!!!!!!!!! Bro!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your the greatest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
