Coming from a full time off grid guy here, people need to stop complying to government over reach. Those are people with job titles that believe they have the power to kick you off your land. Stand your ground and fight.

They don’t realize that this is what true lawlessness looks like, when officials behave the way they’ve been behaving. Lol "government overreach". At worst this is busy body townies using their personal connections to harass them. That's corruption and it's bad, but that's not the boogie man of big government who scares you so much. There could be actual laws and zoning in the area that Kyle didn't know about or understand of which he is in violation, but with how shifty the situation is, I find that hard to believe. Seems like shitty people being shitty, not Big Brother.

I was thinking the same thing. With all the things they could be doing...drunken parties, trashing the land, mercilessly killing wildlife, dumping chemicals, having junk cars, burning trash....but instead fixing up the cabin, planting a garden & fruit trees, building a wood shed, taking pics of foliage and chopping wood...seems pretty shady to me...🙄

Just coming here to say that. Those busy bodies have no right to be on your land without permission. I would definitely talk to a lawyer about that! Also, don't wait until they get all their "legal stuff" in order so they can just dump it on you after not contacting you at all. Be ready with your own legal defense. If they were shady about coming on your property unannounced, I would expect more of the same shady behavior moving forward.
Because they tried to enter not only did they harrass her but TRYING TO enter illegally when she told them to back off may be another crime that needs examined.

I hope the experience doesn’t produce bad vibes when you’re in or around the property. I don’t share many of the opinions expressed here about building codes and actions of the municipality, but I’m glad that you’re staying and trying to work it out. There are plenty of ways to comply with local laws and remain off grid. Septic systems; well water, and solar power are just the most obvious.
Glad to hear you've decided to keep your little get-a-way cabin! Unless, you have been given/served any formal/legal notice on what is needed to be done, i wouldn't be too concerned. Their earlier approach on the subject was spiteful and unprofessional! They tried a bullying method. Again, you can check with your local zoning to make sure you're within your legal rights. Hi Kyle: I live in a neighboring Hilltown, and I used to serve on the town Board of Heath. There was a Board of Health regulation which stated that cabins ( such as the ones on Windsor Pond) had to have a source of potable water in order to obtain a certificate of occupancy. Thought May want to check out your town’s Board of Health regulations. There may also be some kind of town regulation stating what size structures require a septic system. I do not think your town is out to get or, nor are they trying to ruin your dream. They are enforcing health and safety regulations for the town. My advice is to take out a loan and install a well and a septic tank. You and Allie have put in so much time into that cabin that it would be a shame to lose it
If this is the case, they went about it horribly. Marching onto someone's property without a warrant and accosting the owners about an unknown issue is illegal and dangerous for all involved. In a lot of states, you might end up getting shot for doing something like that.
The property is off grid, purchased fair and square. The towns people have been brewing their accusations for some time. They have no right to trespass on private property. They acted like dicks and if they show up again, the sheriff should be called to remove them for trespassing. There is a way to handle this and a way not to handle this. The towns people chose the wrong way. Kyle and Ally are within their rights. There is no water or power source available so they cannot make those demands. And yes, this is more than likely tied to taxes - isn’t everything?
Fight for your dreams and goals, do not let anyone influence your choice, I enjoy watching to see what you guys have achieved!
I hope everything works out well. However, I would like to tell you one thing you should consider. Your problem may not be with the building itself, but with the aspect of being next to running water. As you may already know, in Massachusetts you cannot do anything other than pile firewood within 200 feet of flowing water, and even if you want to place a stepping stone, you need permission from the town. If an enforcement order is received, the situation becomes very serious. In that case, you may need to hire a very expensive environmental expert and spend a lot of money and time. It doesn't have to be negative, but I think you need to know this information. Once again I pray that everything goes well.

I would wonder whether this cottage/house that surely existed BEFORE such a law was passed would give it grandfather rights new development wouldn't receive. Surely such a law did not exist in bygone years. Sadly, when you say someone would need permission to place a stepping stone points to the anger many feel at the intrusiveness of regulations. A stepping stone? Wow! And I'm a fan of environmental regulations.

At one time I remember thinking “Man, there is a lot of work to do on that cabin. It is going to take forever to finish it!” Yet, it is basically done and you have made it beautiful. I now watch every video and find a little escape looking in on your life. I appreciate your optimism and positivity and really want to say thanks for all of your content. I feel for you. We wanted to build ourselves a tiny home on our property without going into debt, but our county has so many regulations it's going to be difficult.
We wanted to go with composting toilet skipping the septic system using greywater for gardens but none of that is possible due to regulations. It's just sad this is the way it has become.
Wishing you the best but stand your ground and if you're staying with regulations don't let them bully you around.

I feel like there's still a lot of missing information. Were they actually "town officials" or were they grumpy neighbors with a grudge? What is the land zoned for? Does "cabin" fall under the "camp" zoning or does it fall into housing? They seem to be going for the "you're living here full time" angle, which you obviously aren't. And you definitely can't put in a septic (and probably not a well) that close to the river for sure.

Just do your thing. I am sure by now you know how people in random places vicariously live through you. As a born and bred Californian I loved New England before i came across your videos a few years back. You literally make me want to sell everything off and move there. You have seemed to bring it to life through your videos and made most of us day dream about living in a place like that. Now, presently, I could only hope to live in a place like that. I may not ever have a chance to get out of California, so for that, don't let them push you around. We know how the heavy hand feels around here. Keep doing what you are doing, these are just more than "videos" to some of us.

Even if you “off the grid” you are still considered within a town jurisdiction. You have to abide by that town’s laws. I would make sure you have your ducks in a row in knowing what is required. Work with the town. Know the laws. And if necessary have a lawyer.

If you’ve legit purchased the land I don’t see what they can do to you. Unless they have some CCR’s that apply to the area (they need to notify you of that), I don’t see they have any authority over what you do to the property. Just put in the septic and well or an engineered rainwater catchment system and move on with your life. Every municipality in the lower 48 requires those two systems for a structure with a permanent foundation, regardless of you living there full time or not.
I have an off-grid home in WA state and went through the same thing you’re dealing with. It sucks, but it’s the reality of building in the US. They will leave you alone once those systems are in place.

Kyle and Alley, when I watch your story on your channel, it takes me back through my childhood, my teenage hood, and my young adult life with my family and all of the outdoor experiences I had, my father built a cabin in the woods in Indiana in the west, the cabin had two levels, we spent all of our weekends, vacations, and holidays there, and some of the most peaceful winters there, with the wonderful smell of burning firewood. I learned to drive in the place where we had our Cabin, we had friends, had so many fun good times, we went to many Covered Bridge Festivals together in the fall there, some of the happiness times my family experienced, but then life threw some hard times at us, economy, job changes, home changes, problems in my parents marriage, and my parents decided to let go of this place we had, our cabin of happiness and peace, and things unfortunately after that time went down, my parents divorced some time later on. But I still miss very much that time of that place of happiness and peace and when I watch your story of your life with your Cabin it takes me back to our Cabin of Peace in Nature, and a part of my soul is still there in that Cabin, in the woods there, and I cry when I remember because of the memories we had there in a happier time. I see the all the happiness and peace and connection that you, your family, friends, Alley, and everything and everyone who came along with and on your journey to creating your life, your Cabin, your new home, you have done nothing wrong building an Off Grid Cabin in the woods, your blood, sweat, and tears is in that place, it is a part of you and Alley, and you and Alley are a part of your Sanctuary there in those woods. It may have been stressful, hardworking, a lot of money wrapped up into creating it, but there is so much reason to keep it, to stand your ground there, to fight for it.
Whoever those city officials were, are envious of what you have, and they want it because they see what it is worth, please fight to keep your Cabin. You may have a beautiful home besides your Off Grid Cabin, but your Cabin and the Woods there surrounding your Cabin is an Absolute Priceless Sanctuary that is worth fighting for. If you sell it, you will be selling a piece of your soul so easily to those City Crooks. I hope with all my heart that you, and Alley will fight for this place you have put your souls into. I would be beyond my dreams to have a place like what you have there.

You know someone close to that place probably wants that property. That's why they've complained, they see your improvements and they know you're not going to sell at a price they can afford. Sounds like pure jealousy to me. Keep it!! You've earned it by sweat and tears.

So I also have a property like yours, it also is my refuge and winter is my favorite time. It is not totally off grid, has running water from a cistern collecting rain water, has a holding tank for sewage that is pumped out twice a year. We also have electricity. The cabin and shed are on state forest land. We lease the land every year. The Forest Service has rules and regulations that we are expected to abide by. At this point the Forester that I deal with has been quite frankly awesome. It appears to me that as long as we attempt to follow the regs, and stay within the majority of the rules they are very reasonable. There are certain things that are not in total compliance, however every time I have dealt with them they have been more than accommodating. There are some requests that they have denied, but very few. Hold on to your place! My suggestion is to try to comply with the requirements that the town wants you to comply with, don’t make enemies of the town bureaucracy. Hopefully reasonable heads will prevail on all issues. I also ran into similar issues with our township and my small farm over land that needed transferred to me. I heard a lot of ugly rumors of what township officials were saying (ignore rumors). I was not able to purchase all of the land that I wanted but through compromise it all worked out. Reasonableness prevailed. Good luck!

Great decision. Hope it all works out for you. We are only seeing your side of the story, but the land and all the work you've done has been such an admirable pleasure to watch. Thank you for sharing it. I also live in the northern part of the country, but on the opposite side. We have beautiful woods and natural settings similar to your area. Sounds like our laws for building also apply there. We must include building permits to include a well and septic system for a structural home. Imagine if everyone who wanted to, built a beautiful cabin in the woods. What would they do with their human and environmental waste? Where would they be harvesting water and dumping their grey water? Risking the local environment with these impacts may be the reason for the disapproval of your neighbors and town. However, if they are really harassing you in the manner you describe, there is no excuse for their nasty behavior. Here in Colorado, I own an “off lot” told I can’t build anything on it. The county building division is more than over reaching. It’s a beautiful spot to just be. They said a rv would be ok, but don’t desire an rv on the property. I’m thinking a simi-permanent tent hybrid. Good luck on your situation and please keep us updated if possible.

I'm glad you're going to strive to stay.... The board that trespassed should be held accountable.... If they pursue what they claim.... Fight it, you have a shot... My guess is the board is gonna try n pass ordinances to push you out. They trespassed caused trauma n harm to the two of you and they should be held accountable... Pay attention for board meeting go to them or read the minutes online if available or get hard copies talk to the law and file a complaint... So it is documented, granted you both video taped the incident after it happened, but it's not documented by law enforcement...
