Fran Drescher Q&A On SAG-AFTRA Strike: "The Digital Age Is Cannibalizing Us"
The Hollywood Reporter
/ hollywoodreporter - Розваги
It is worth watching the 40 min press speech. They made their points very well, and very clearly. With the effect of streaming services on residuals reduces the value of past work, and the use of AI will reduce the value of future work. Actors and writers know that they strike now or they lose forever. They are right.
Fran speaks the truth. She’s a strong advocate for the underdog. She’s quite inspirational. Anyone notice those actors making $10million+ per picture don’t say anything. They just sit back and enjoy their millions.
botcrap of full are You
Why is it always the outdated actress that’s speaking up?
@@pleasebeinteresting Um--ignoring the "outdated" remark--she's speaking up because she's union president.
Replace the archaic network contracts with digital contracts. Cut the AMPTP out of negotiations. Limit the studios to a network usage contract. Starve them out of streaming content. Take back your power. Don’t be at their mercy. Don’t be victimized.
They want to fire all the actors, and digitally replace them with AI. Then the movie corporation can make more money with fake movies.
I'm with Fran, what's wrong with these people. 😢 I'm a Truckdriver and there trying as hard as they can to make everyone jobless and starve to death. If there is no one to buy goods, how you gonna stay rich. You will get a knock on your fortress by the millions. And we HUNGRY.😂🎉
Exactly. I'm a retail worker and I have so much appreciation for truck drivers. I worked in Hollywood for a bit too, not as an actor or writer, but I saw the grueling work on those sets.
It's not as glamorous as many would think (except perhaps for huge stars on big productions).
We are all in this together ❤️.
It's unfortunate that so many truck drivers and other blue collar workers don't realize this too. Their salaries and work conditions aren't being hurt by a made-up "woke" agenda or more LGBT+ people having more rights or even illegal immigrants. It's all the greedy executives and CEOs who think they deserve to live rich like kings while they increasingly treat workers more and more like peasantry and serfs.
Lets eat the rich. Or at least use them as fertilizer.
And actors aren't "the rich". Even the best paid ones are just well off.
They'd rather be King of the garbage heap instead of second fiddle
The strike is necessary and not only thay
It's crazy how greedy the hollywood executives truly are and so insane that they completely disregard the very people that made them powerful and rich. It's also ironic that they kept canceling their meetings to promote the summer movies and they so far all the summer movies ARE BIG FLOPS... Karma is coming to them! Some of them DARED TO SAY that the strike will end when the writers loose their homes from not affording their mortgages..Well I guess these Executives might end up in worse situation if they keep their greed and EGO before doing the right thing.
Have you seen the television shows lately? They do not need Hollywood actress anymore
Not just Hollywood executives, look at Bill Gates, how much he's investing in AI. We need to understand the danger behind it. Control and power in fewer hands.
@@TELEVISIONARCHIVESSir how many exactly use AI actors?
Fran for PRESIDENT! ❤
In music terms, they got a 360 deal, smh. I stand with Fran.
Fran is intelligent, heartfelt and beautiful.
Let's automate away the drivers, waiters, cooks, actors, writers, mechanics, programmers, let's automate away everyone, guys. Once we replace human labor with computers our products will be so incredibly fast and cheap to make, and we'll sell them to .... nobody, because we automated away all the consumers and they're now destitute and can't afford anything.
Then we let them starve and live happily ever after in the arctic with clean water and air. Until the Thing unfreezes.
Literally nobody but upper class people : 👀
@@-rcrc-r7624
*Elites love their Elitism!*
This is what they forget. They forget their employees are also consumers that contribute to the economy. If there are less and less consumers, the more companies fail. Because we can’t afford frivolous stuff and would just be going to food, water and shelter
Well, let's tax AI then to the point it costs as much or more than a worker... with that tax money let's pay everyone the salary they should be getting!
Wow they were using the 12 days extension to milk the most out of actors to promote summer movies.
So what? The movies were finished. It was fair to let them promote their work. Milk? you sound like a clown.
Amen! SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher's plainspoken, intelligent take on the state of labor in America is heard not only by SAG-AFTRA members, but hopefully by all labor nationwide.
Crazy to think that Ai is really threatening peoples Likelihood. The CEOs are tone deaf of course. Fair pay isn't so hard. And no actor should have their image/voice used and not get paid. Its ridiculous.
Yes. And The autocorrect of livelihood to likelihood is actually more ominously accurate.
It’s not just being tone-deaf, it’s evil
AI is also identity theft. These companies are literally using people´s bodies, faces and mannerisms to keep them out of work
EXACTLY 😎👍🏻
That AI might be able to help a broke young filmmaker make a movie that tells their story in a cheap, affordable way. So many Luddites here refusing to acknowledge how much ALL our lives benefit from new technology.
Proud of you all !!!
I always knew there was a deep reason that I loved Fran.
This is very scary. I stand with these guys. We have to protect unions in peoples jobs. This is just insanity.
baby it's impossible
We should protect any job. Because actors won't be the onlg ones replaced. We need to fight for our rights
It’s actually not scary at all, you must have just started watching the news. People have been losing jobs forever, it’s just that they don’t whine and they look for work elsewhere. The boss is the boss for a reason, act like a normal employee and quit if you don’t like it!!!!
@@jopedo138 maybe one day it'll be you to lose a job. It could be anytime soon. And maybe you won't be that stoical about it
This is the best thing could have ever happen to Independent Artist. No more Corporate Control. Let's start a NEW TV Channel with NEW INDEPENDENT artist.
It is already happening all over the world. USA is just now realizing that the train has left the station.
It’s not just this industry with problems. It’s this entire country. Wealth inequality is rampant and terrible here. We have billionaires with more money than they can ever spend and then people like my mom who lost my dad to Covid and now only has her small income and is at risk of losing everything. How is that fair? It’s asinine
Love Fran…..she makes a solid point.
*Especially about the Television series and the amount of episodes nowadays.. which is just very short and truly disappointing!*
@@scarlett19b 💯💯💯 Not all actors are high profile and making the high end money. Most aren’t.
@@scarlett19bthink about the budget of an episode of tv today vs the Nanny. It’s not realistic and no one wants to watch that type of TV anymore. We can get equal quality braindead entertainment on places like UA-cam in a shorter format that fits into our schedules better. This point she keeps making is unrealistic. There are daily UA-cam shows that have higher budgets than an episode of The Nanny.
@@ytm23ak
*Well that's just your opinion and not a Fact!*
@@scarlett19b that’s simply not true. In 1992 the budget per episode of an average show costed 1.4 million dollars. Today an average show costs 4 Million per episode with hit shows like The Mandolorian costing 20 million per episode. That doesn’t even factor in marketing. How is anyone supposed to make a profit off of that? But consumers today will only accept the next greatest spectacle so companies have no choice but to make concise, super expensive mini series instead of modest productions. UA-cam and creator driven content has filled in the role of shows like Fran (which is obviously for the worse). This is all data driven. Also stop adding bold to everything you write, so tacky.
As a Local 80 Union Member! We all stand in solidarity together!👊🏽👊🏽
Can hear these two talk for hours 👏👏👏
they probably do talk for hours, look like they a couple
Why don't we just automate these CEOs instead?
But... but who will make the money? Where will it go? Think of their mansions....
@@milosradmilac8911 lmfao
@@milosradmilac8911think of the children!!!!! Simpsons
The whole concept of the CEO is outdated and should have been left in the last century. Top down hierarchy lead by humans-mostly male-is a failed experiment. There is psychological disconnect that these CEOs have with the reality of how people on the “lower rungs” of society survive and it is destroying us…
if no one stands up to AI, it will domoniate every other sectors.
No, AI should be replacing all these worthless and greedy CEOs instead of the creatives lol
She’s talking about gaslighting. Stay strong!!!!
In 1960 you had many negotiating that strike with a moral compass, common sense and understanding what benefits everyone.
Not today...
This is a David vs. Goliath scenario.
The studios sag aftra are negotiating with have unlimited power and money; both corrupt the heart, mind and soul of a person.
The strike hits these studios in the pocket book too.
big time.
Maybe that will be what gets the studios back to the negotiating table fast.
We will see.
I stand with sag - aftra 💪
Fran is so inspiring!
I stand with Fran ! ❤#IStandWithFran
As a digital artist we saw this coming during beta tests of these various AI systems , we sounded alarm bells and no one listened . Now it's moved on to other work places , i'm afraid it's too late .
Nah. Who sounded the alarm bells? Just a year ago, Midjourney images were laughably bad. It just moved so fast suddenly. I think a fair compromise should be made regardless what Ai can do.
@@buzzfunk Samuel L. Jackson had this contract with all producers that his image and voice will not be used in any kind of production when he dies. I don't know how true this is but this could be put in place for all actors.
Yea for real! But it is never too late
They already have their rescue boat. The poor class drown . Titanic crash was a scam. Hollywoods greatest performance is this strike.
This particular industry may help stem that. These are the most recognizable people in the world with platforms far greater than almost anyone else. Whatever happens next will be precedent setting.
That's incredibly well put... The digital age IS cannibalizing us in so many ways. Social media also should be regulated, what's it's done to society, how much money it makes off of us...The addiction? The endless content creation requirement? We all work for them now. Thank you Fran!
Stop being afraid of freedom and wanting to create a totalitarian state. The technological progress we have lived through is absolutely staggering and I hope people like Fran NEVER succeed at slowing that progress down.
@@jedijones Really? That's your take on this? 'Staggering technological progress' isn't a goal per se, mind you, it cannot regulate itself. Look back at history and see how human kind always managed to put a destructive twist on great [technological] inventions. As for totalitarian state you mentioned - don't you think 'social networks' are a form of that? Or do you honestly believe you're free there - YT included - while being herded by algorhythms?
Well said!
5:30 being paid for a theatrical re-release does not seem unreasonable to me. I even remember being very frustrated when they “remade” the Lion King. How much money did the original creators get from the so-called “new” version?
Protect Fran at all cost
This situation is not exclusive to the actors' union. All across the country, people work for menial wages that bring enormous profits to a very small segment of corporate America. A-I will destroy this country. That is NOT an exaggeration. Little by little it will happen and we must confront it with brutal resistance. Resist in a unified strategy that minimizes or eliminates the threats to millions of livelihoods. Millions of families have only one or two months of living expenses and could be evicted from apartments or homes.
My prayers go out to those people because those people need jobs to feed thier families.
They better put AI protections in place to protect the actors and writers. If not studios will most definitely replace them with AI representations. If a studio can make a movie with AI and still gross millions of dollars they will do it guaranteed. It will then be taught in Harvard Business School how to minimize costs using AI.
It has been happening for some time already.
So proud of Fran 👏
That Black Mirror episode, "Joan is awful", well... They are showing us/you what they have been planning. It's always the same. If they show it in movies/tv, it'll become real at some point.
I believe theyve been doing this tabloid and viral videos already...glitching.
Go Fran! Stick up for actors and nannies everywhere!!!
It’s very sad how these CEO’s will never see in the long run how damaging AI will be. How will people pay for things if there’s no job for them after getting replaced? I saw a video of a teacher scolding his class because he noticed half his writing class used AI for their papers! I’m a 90’s kid, back in my time all we had to “worry” about was people just texting in class. And for sure these actors deserve a little slice of the streaming pie. Some of these shows I feel sometimes get more views on stream than when they were shown on tv.
CEOs don’t care. They’ll make their millions…the retire or die before the consequences are felt.
Another great, "David VS. Goliath" Story... this one is just about "Artist and Storytelling" in general.
The best thing for SAGAFTRA to do is raise some capital and create their own company to 1) develop a streaming service 2) build out a pipeline of tv shows and films, essentially icing out the studio executives. All the studios are, is a fund to pay bills prior to theatrical release.
So true! There is precedent. When the studios got abusive, Griffith, Chaplin + formed United Artists. It can be done again and so much easier with online distribution.
The studios wanted mission impossible and other film promos in that time, that’s so messed up!
WOW. These people are seriously impressive ❤❤❤
Clever lady that Nanny... go Fran! :o)
She is on the right path
I stand in solidarity with actors and writers 👊🏻
I think using someones voice/image with AI should come with a fine if used without permission. We have created this mess to make our lives easier but it’s leading to our destruction. The way writers get paid in regards to streaming needs to change. Why can’t they get paid as if they were working on syndicated shows regardless of streaming? CEO’s and other higher ups are taking it all!
Make out loves easier? Easier for who? Tech giants? Elon musk? Bill gates? The google company? Tech industries are the ones benefitting from this, its time to stop this ordeal
It has been illegal for decades to use someone's likeness without permission. Don't be bamboozled into believing that strawman to justify this strike, LOL.
@@jedijonesclearly they’re planning on using AI without your consent. It’s big studios and people like you the reason why they’re on strike right now. The bootlicking must feel great
Reps for studios & streamers have reportedly expressed a desire to return to negotiations with SAG-AFTRA in a meeting on Friday.
This is after they refused to return to negotiations with SAG about a week or so ago.
I'm glad they're talking about how AI can be dangerous for us all in various ways.
and people like to compare AI to calculators, AI is beyond a calculator and dangerous to many industries. The only ones advocating for AI are people that ignore the danger it poses and the executives that will make more money out if it.
@@gregap8282 I agree. They also say that it's not going to take away your job, it will help you manage it better. Maybe to a degree it can be true but still we cannot eliminate people doing things, it's against our nature. We all have to do something, use our strengths and social skills, help ourselves and others someway. Also it makes you think less when it comes to creating process so no thinking no improving...
@@ipekkomurcu exactly. AI is a tool now and the tech is in early stages. Give it 20, 30 years. Look at what's going om at white castle or Walmart. Machines doing the work instead of humans. This is another Industrial Revolution, but a bigger scale with bigger consequences for us (the working class) Bob Iger, Jeff Bezos and the Kardashians will be fine. They will always be fine.
@@gregap8282the celebrities and elite will do anything go save their own skins and will invest in AI if they arent already. This is all a performance .
Power to you folks!
The problem is Hollywood studios has spent a lot of money on streaming, and several theatrical movies are flops. And also physical media is currently a dead business. One of the things I disagree with is licensing fees on old shows because there is no guarantee that they get watched. Imagine a subscription streaming service as a video store. If the video store was charged a fee to keep the videos on the shelves it would go out of business. I'm fine with the TV model of royalties per view. Where there is a distributor/creator split.
Just a fraction of this publicity for vfx artists when they were protesting during the life of Pi academy awards would have done so much.
I'm on their side but it is pretty frustrating to see.
can we get Fran to the White House now? I'll like that
AI is a great tool, but also a danger for society, people need to stand in reality and see it for what it is, a way for executives and corporations to make more money by cutting away from their biggest expense: you as a worker.
0:25 He had to check and make sure she was coherent after he heard the word "Vortex".
She has style, she has flair and she’s there ✊🏻 workers of the world, unite
The future looks scary but I stay optimistic.
Nope. There’s no hope except for the sweet release of death.
Based Fran Drescher & Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. With UPS striking as well, it's to get the boot off our necks.
i love hearing fran talk😩🔥 and she has so much truth in what she’s saying 2:04
Fran Dreshner is right this is not just about actors. Technology is and should move forward but rules need to be in place to protect working people.
What do rules matter when they are made by the same people who you are against. Government and big business write the rules. Then you will complain later that the new rules are not fair.
I think The Nanny may be single handed change the course and unite commoners , critiques, and show business. She is right, we need to stand along with her. Strengthen the picket fence. I hope truck driver union, farmer union to join in and say no to AI.
So… Fran 2024?
We’re behind you Fran!
I’m standing on your side, Fran, even though I’m not there in person I don’t wanna do food delivery and all that stuff I want to be part of the movie industry at least try you know even when you guys go to the award ceremony like the Golden Globes and all that you know the people who interview you guys who ask you questions I could do something like that like hold a microphone and interview you I could do something like that what’s up with the contract thing for real since when did it become law that you have to do a contract and do a background check and all that that to me is stupid.
Go Fran!
Fran True!
How about "The Nanny - The Movie" ....that would sell
I am a proud member of SAG AFTRA today! Fran is entirely frank, clear, passionate and 100% right about how this is about labor in general, not just actors-related labor - every facet of society is being bought up by private equity firms and turned into short-term profit machines at the expensive of all the employees whose labor is the very value that keeps the companies running.
The people running these companies now don’t carry about the product or the people, most are just rich pricks who are addicted to making more money at the expensive of everyone and everything else.
It is time for labor the world over to all stand up together and withhold our labor until the system is changed entirely.
Keep on STRIKING 😎👍🏻👊👊
The thing is the streaming era made earning hard for all sides. First consumers do not want any ads so how else will they generate income aside from subscriptions? All I can think of are subtle product placements incorporated into the scenes but I doubt they pay enough to turn a profit. And they need to attract new subscribers hence they need to keep making new content. However without ads these streaming companies don't have much money to pour into episodes for original content that's why we get less of them. I could be wrong in everything though but this is just what I observed.
Now of course you can argue that Amazon and Apple have plenty of money but if the streaming business arm isn't earning what do they do? Instead of outrightly closing they try to find ways to cut costs first. This is what Fran was saying, how come we only 6 episodes per season when she used to do 28 per season.
No, you're correct. Absolutely correct.
labor shortage is also one of the issues that put robots on the street. not just because they don't want to hire people. Trust me. in the next few decades, as the entire population aging while the birth rate drops exponentially, there will have to be more AI and robots to serve humans.
What a class Lady! 👍
WE ARE WITH YOU!!!!! SOLIDARITY OF THE ARTS! SOLIDARITY OF HUMANITY! YOU WILL NOT REPLACE US!
Shut them down - make the executives sweat this out financially
Capitalism has a set of rules. The system IS functioning according to it's rules. Read Marx's Capital if you want to understand this class conflict.
Love her !!!
I stand with Fran!! I stand with working class Americans!! I am a working class American, we need protection from AI NOW!! Why does AI get the fun creative jobs and people are still stuck doing menial labor? The robots are supposed to make our lives BETTER AND EASIER!
Now if my Union the AFA-CWA can act on getting all Flight Attendants boarding pay. Other worker unions need to take note.
I love Fran 😘
We want you Fran as the next president of the United States!
well one prominent person with a voice finally told the truth: AI will eliminate as many jobs as they can apply it with. simple.
Bubilla Fran FTW 🧨♥️
GO FRAN!!!!!
The AMPTP is losing this one, right before our eyes. Don't they see this?
A.I is suppose to help workers, Not Replace Them!!
Wag, sgt… aren’t the only people that could lose their job… but Bob Iger also could replace, it’s News staff as well… and if he could do that, so could all the other channels with AI computer replacements.
Fran for President 🇺🇸 2024
thats why government needs too give ppl monthly allotment b4 too late
Unsubscribe to stream services as support to the strike
Which, in turn, may have us reading more books. Not a bad idea……
As AI acting and likeness is slowly getting better, so is the likeness and acting.
Would love to see the article the Hollywood reporter writes after this 🤨
Yay!!! Please strike forever!! 👏

Love this SMART WOMEN!!! Wake up AMERICANS AND STAND WITH THIS STRIKE now !!!
Will some movies being made in development be canceled
Kind of a silly sidebar here, but i cant believe Fran Drescher is 65. She's aging super gracefully.
Fran really earned my respect after that Kim Kardashian mess. She really cares about what she’s doing.
The entire D&G non-event was a distraction by some outlets and their billionaire owners, to try and pit the union leadership against the rest of the membership - a classic ‘divide and conquer’ tactic.
You mean her doing her job that she was contractually obligated to do? The media were the ones who created that "mess", cause me and many other SAG members with brains knew she was working. Just another tactic to make her look bad and try to weaken our resolve.

Bring Disney and Warner Bros. to their knees. They are crumbling. A strike will well and truly shatter their empires. Start up a gofundme page and ask every filmgoer to donate a movie ticker's worth of money to keep your strike kicking along. You can get your pay out of the donations if it is only 3 cents...........
Actors and Writers should learn to Code or install Solar Panels. Like the Keystone Pipeline workers were told by Hollywood actors and politicians. This has been happening to normal people for years but Actors are just now realizing that Big Business is Corrupt? Hypocrisy.
It’s *obscene* how much money the _executives_ make compared to the people who actually _create_ the content we love.
