It is worth watching the 40 min press speech. They made their points very well, and very clearly. With the effect of streaming services on residuals reduces the value of past work, and the use of AI will reduce the value of future work. Actors and writers know that they strike now or they lose forever. They are right.

Replace the archaic network contracts with digital contracts. Cut the AMPTP out of negotiations. Limit the studios to a network usage contract. Starve them out of streaming content. Take back your power. Don’t be at their mercy. Don’t be victimized.

They want to fire all the actors, and digitally replace them with AI. Then the movie corporation can make more money with fake movies.

I'm with Fran, what's wrong with these people. 😢 I'm a Truckdriver and there trying as hard as they can to make everyone jobless and starve to death. If there is no one to buy goods, how you gonna stay rich. You will get a knock on your fortress by the millions. And we HUNGRY.😂🎉

Exactly. I'm a retail worker and I have so much appreciation for truck drivers. I worked in Hollywood for a bit too, not as an actor or writer, but I saw the grueling work on those sets.
It's not as glamorous as many would think (except perhaps for huge stars on big productions).

It's unfortunate that so many truck drivers and other blue collar workers don't realize this too. Their salaries and work conditions aren't being hurt by a made-up "woke" agenda or more LGBT+ people having more rights or even illegal immigrants. It's all the greedy executives and CEOs who think they deserve to live rich like kings while they increasingly treat workers more and more like peasantry and serfs.

It's also ironic that they kept canceling their meetings to promote the summer movies and they so far all the summer movies ARE BIG FLOPS... Karma is coming to them! Some of them DARED TO SAY that the strike will end when the writers loose their homes from not affording their mortgages..Well I guess these Executives might end up in worse situation if they keep their greed and EGO before doing the right thing.

Today an average show costs 4 Million per episode with hit shows like The Mandolorian costing 20 million per episode. That doesn’t even factor in marketing. How is anyone supposed to make a profit off of that? But consumers today will only accept the next greatest spectacle so companies have no choice but to make concise, super expensive mini series instead of modest productions. UA-cam and creator driven content has filled in the role of shows like Fran (which is obviously for the worse). This is all data driven. Also stop adding bold to everything you write, so tacky.

The problem is Hollywood studios has spent a lot of money on streaming, and several theatrical movies are flops. And also physical media is currently a dead business. One of the things I disagree with is licensing fees on old shows because there is no guarantee that they get watched. Imagine a subscription streaming service as a video store. If the video store was charged a fee to keep the videos on the shelves it would go out of business. I'm fine with the TV model of royalties per view. Where there is a distributor/creator split.

AI is a great tool, but also a danger for society, people need to stand in reality and see it for what it is, a way for executives and corporations to make more money by cutting away from their biggest expense: you as a worker.

I am a proud member of SAG AFTRA today! Fran is entirely frank, clear, passionate and 100% right about how this is about labor in general, not just actors-related labor - every facet of society is being bought up by private equity firms and turned into short-term profit machines at the expensive of all the employees whose labor is the very value that keeps the companies running.
The people running these companies now don’t carry about the product or the people, most are just rich pricks who are addicted to making more money at the expensive of everyone and everything else.
It is time for labor the world over to all stand up together and withhold our labor until the system is changed entirely.

The thing is the streaming era made earning hard for all sides. First consumers do not want any ads so how else will they generate income aside from subscriptions? All I can think of are subtle product placements incorporated into the scenes but I doubt they pay enough to turn a profit. And they need to attract new subscribers hence they need to keep making new content. However without ads these streaming companies don't have much money to pour into episodes for original content that's why we get less of them. I could be wrong in everything though but this is just what I observed.
Now of course you can argue that Amazon and Apple have plenty of money but if the streaming business arm isn't earning what do they do? Instead of outrightly closing they try to find ways to cut costs first. This is what Fran was saying, how come we only 6 episodes per season when she used to do 28 per season.

You can get your pay out of the donations if it is only 3 cents...........
