    I tried one local gym, won’t mention names but was asked to spend £120 on their clothing and then £100 a month. Classes were 30 odd people with one instructor ….. not once did the highly decorated face of the gym ever take a session. Went to another local gym, two highly decorated coaches taking one class of 10 students, both have competed at very high level, super friendly not about the money more about you learning. They also cost half the amount per month. There seems to be some very commercialised set ups in bjj that don’t seem focused around the learning more the money.

      Everybody has different experiences - the Gracie we are at has 4-5 instructors per class, sometimes a one to one ratio if it’s a smaller day.

      @@S7ZEE but a common theme is charging high prices and demanding everyone buys their clothing to the tune of £200 or more just to start class on day one. Personally that doesn’t sit right, there is no crime in profit however there is fair and for me that’s not.

      Kimonos are not cheap. After paying costs, shipping and customs and then to make some profit as well.
      Also just because someone has competed and charge less doesn’t make them a good teacher or better than the school charging more.
      Its like going into a nice restaurant and moaning about the price then going to McDonalds and sayings it better because its cheaper.

    I have a question, is it normal that my BJJ gym closes for 12 days during the holidays and still charged full price for the month?

      They could be open 1day a month & charge you $1,000 for the day. It’s their business & you’re a consenting customer.

      No that’s way too many days closed. My gym close maybe 1-2 days max. There should be other instructors to keep gym open.

    Great advice 👍🏻 Truly 👍🏻
    The only thing I would add is that you have to look at how insane the members are there. If there is a culture of ripping submissions and hurting your opponent then maybe you might consider training somewhere else.
    I was training at a gym that had a lot of injuries and I was lucky I never got hurt. But it was dangerous. The good thing about it was if you’re tough maybe you can learn a bit faster in that environment. And you become aggressive, which personally I think it can be nice.
    Later I started training at a different gym and they thought I was a freak and rolled too hard and the coaches and teammates told me to cool it. I honestly thought it was just normal 🤷🏻‍♂️

    That was a nonanswer. My kids are switching to a different gym. We realized we wanted an Ibjjf centered training from a more serious coach. Our prior coach just had the kids standing on the wall most of the class waiting for their turn to fight for 5 minutes and there was no training in techniques.

    I’m enjoying listening to these interviews and has begun to get that itch going again. I do have a question but here’s a little background. I’m 47 and 330 with two total knee replacements looming in my future. I’ve never had any previous training and had what seemed to be a panic attack after someone half my size mounted on my stomach. Are there schools that actually have a learners class to educate the basic techniques? Secondly, should I try some boxing to try and lose the weight so if I get mounted that I can still breathe? That was a scary feeling but even more scary that even if I tap some students don’t stop. Thanks for any help and I look forward to listening to another podcast.

      I got really claustrophobic when someone was mounted on me when I was new. But with time you will get used to this situation and learn to transition out successfully. It takes time and patience , just be consistent and trust the process ♥️

      If students dont respect the tap, DONT roll with them and tell an instructor. Constantly rolling with someone who doesnt acknowledge the tap will get you injured eventually. Most schools have starter classes which are very comfortable to new students. Things will often get uncomfortable and you may get hurt sometimes. That does eventually get better with time.

      Bro, it helps to get in shape. Try some cardio for two or three months before getting into bjj. Two or three HIIT sessions and one 45-60 minutes slow run per week should do the job.

      Not to mention two total knees looming.
      Skip the running and get into a pool. Find a pool exercise routine and do it consistently, eventually progressing to a combo of those exercises and swimming or just swimming. You can do it. You may very well delay your knee replacements if you are faithful. BTW, I’m a physical therapist. Best wishes brother.
