This is probably the best deep dive video I’ve watched about wheelsets. It should be a much watch video for anybody that’s in the market for a new wheelset. You did an amazing job of pointing out how these wheelset differ and what types of rider each wheelset is best suited for. Hopefully you’ll be able to test some DT Swiss and I9 wheelsets at some point.
Amazing work and filled with great information. I don’t know how you have collected so many! Maybe you need to do a full shop tour if you haven’t. Though, I know you’re now moving. Glad you addressed the main elephant in the room of not having We Are One, those seem to be some of the most recommended on the forums I’m in. But also NOBL and I’ve seen some good chatter on Newmen, which aren’t so common here unless you’re buying a Propain.
Thanks for giving some props to 29x3. I have Stans Baron MK3 running 3” XR2’s and it has been fantastic, mine is on a Salsa Beargrease (carbon fat bike) and it is my long gravel ride adventure bike. I have Ibis 933 (~30mil wide) on my DV9, and I really think they are a fantastic budget wheelset for XC/trail riding.
Steve, I bought some Zipp 3Zeromotos 2 years ago based on your original reviews. I like that you are honest about them being a challenging wheel build….but I’d like to add that if someone is not the home bike mechanic, DIY, wheel build and wheel truing guy they should plan on becoming that guy! I’ve been riding and racing since the early 90’s, owned a lot of wheels over the years, but never had such wonky wheels until the Zipps entered my life. They’re for the “mostly round = true” kinda guys for sure. They even came out of the box from Zipp a little funny. I ended up rebuilding them on Onyx hubs after a year or so as you have. However, with all that out of the way….I just absolutely love these wheels on my hardtail. Can’t really describe them, they seem to swim through singletrack like nothing else. They just need me (and a spoke wrench) as much as I need them.
Great video! Notes: New Stan’s wheels optioned with M-Pulse hubs use the P321 magnetic pawls, but the rest of the design is unique. E-Sync hubs use 4-pawl hubs at 8.2° engagement intervals and chromoly axles. The P321 G3 hub is similar, but different. The M-Pulse hubs from Stans have a nice retaining ring to keep the pawls attached when the freehub body is removed. Some wheels I’m riding: Enigma: Stan’s Flow S2 front, EX3 rear w/ M-Pulse hub. Shred Dogg: Praxis AL32 (asymmetric) laced to P321 G2. Painful to seat tires, since the spoke holes overlap the surface where the bead starts to seat. Older rim tape is worse in this case since it sags into the spoke hole. Megatrail MX: Stan’s Flow S1 front, DT EX511 to P321 G2 rear. Hub is a little draggy, so I’ll clean and re-grease. This hub grenaded a magnet. Crash replacement $50 or so for a new, full set. Pulling the shards of magnet out from the drive ring sucked. Legend: EX511, Hope Pro 5 rear hub. Prior sets: Giant AM-2. Soft with brittle formula hubs. Onyx Classic was a wonderful hub. Hydra / Baron Mk3 w/ Sapin CX-Ray spokes. Snapped the axle, but I9 sent replacement V2 axle with bearings, no questions asked. I miss that wheelset, but wanted to move on from the Hydra hubs. I ought to be more in tune with spoke tensions, etc…
Thank you for the video. The Stan's Arch MK4 is i28mm. I just ordered a custom set for my drop bar atb which will be running 29x2.35 xc tires. It's good to know that the Astral Serpentines aren't stiff, as I've been running those wheels for over 3 years now with i9 1/1 hubs. Been running with 29x2.6 tires & really enjoy the combo. Now the upgrade itch has been quelled! Appreciate it.
The Zipp 3Zeromotos are absolutely amazing and turn a stiff hardtail into a limo. Tracks wonderfully, takes out the harshness fiddling around with fine suspension setting cant, and mountain goats rocky technical uphills, One of the best purchases I've made in 30 years of MTB riding. Surprised I don't see more around.
Awesome in-depth wheel/rim discussion. I have to agree that the best rims I’ve ever used were the ibis rims, I’ve ridden both the 735 and the blackbird set. They are bombproof and I’m over 200lbs. I’m sold on the 35 internal width. But currently I’m running an aluminum Reserve HD 32 spoke with DT 350 Swiss hub, these are very stiff and tuff also, on my full squish.
Got out on some Onyx hubs and super freaky light Nextie rims (cxray spokes) for the first time yesterday...If you haven't tried silent hubs you've got to try them, and man epically light rims make even the slightest downhill feel like you're flying!! (and even at 200lbs and for single speed, the onyx guys tried to get me to go with Vespers...I still wanted the classics though haha)
Well done comparison, just sharing that my experience with WTB CZRi30/Hydra wheel set has been fantastic. Please consider adding these in the future and also e*thirteen's new Flux line up!
I have the elite wheelset (the previous models? i27 for my XC bike). They weigh slightly more than 1300g and costed me less then $700. Been riding them pretty hard for about 6 months now and they have held true and quite frankly could be my favorite wheelset. Highly recommend
I'm so glad I bought my Horizon v2 wheelset, I just wish I could get a XD driver body for them because mine came with Microspline and all my spare higher end parts are Sram.. great video, thank you for taking the time to explain the differences in all these wheels. you are the BEST! hope you are feeling at least a little better these days. Cheers.
@@EasternOT you are a godsend. Love this content Steve. I definitely geek out about wheels and have many custom sets similar to yours. I completely agree with the Berd spoke wheels and have sent Berd a few hub sets and had them custom built up with /from Berd. One of my Berd sets have the ONYX hook loop Vesper hubs laced up to DT Swiss XM481 rims. As for Zipp carbon, I have the XPLR 101 rims custom built with Chris King hubs, amazing unique carbon feel. I also love wide rims. I have i35 CB7 Stan’s Baron rims, i35,i40 and i45 RaceFace ARC rims. I completely agree that carbon can be lighter but isn’t always. Berd spokes are not only lighter but offer better vibration dampening properties. Double and triple butted spokes laced 3 cross with 32 hole rims also have better dampening properties than 28 or 24 spoke wheels. Almost every wheel set is used with CushCore, CushCore Wide and CC Gravel. I feel like that also makes the wheels more durable and more dampened too.
Seems like the ENVE M6 40i is gone from their lineup. Would love to invest in some 27.5+ carbon hoops but cant seem to find any in the wider internal width anymore!
I LOVE my Evil Loopholes on a full suspension as well. Shame they don't make them anymore, but to your point they're very similar to other F&B products. They feel precise but not too stiff and I put a real beating on them riding in the techy northeast. zero complaints in ~1.5 years of riding them.

I run a 29" ZIPP 3zero moto as a front wheel on my Transition Patrol (Mx) with an e13 carbon rear (27.5) The zipp definitely had flex/squirmed too much for me to run it as a rear wheel but I absolutely like it as a front wheel. I love my Blackbird Send rims but I can't say the same for the Ibis logo hubs. The engagement is fine but the durability has been awful. Within 1500 miles, the wheel bearings themselves went bad. Tried to service them but they're sealed so they need to be replaced. I've heard it's a pretty common issue from other people with the same wheels so I think I'm just going to get them re-laced to a better hub like a DT Swiss or i9.
