  • Okuma continues to come up with innovative products. The new PCH Custom Trolling series rods offer their new carbon fiber butt section. This is then mated with an ALPS aluminum reel seat with double lockdowns. The rods are offered in 5'10" and 6'10". Both are available in Heavy or Extra Heavy form. The 5'10" rods are offered with both straight OR curved butts. The 6'10" models are only available with curbed butts. We'll keep the long and short rods in inventory, Line class ratings, the H is rated 50-100#, the XH is 100-250#. Personally, given the bend of the rod, the H would be the choice for 80# and down, the XH for 100# and up. In Australia there's also a lighter rod in the line, may see that here in USA market as well. These were designed in the USA, with some credit to the entire West Coast staff and Luc from Anglers Choice providing some input for the rods, too. It is anticipated that these will be short supply for some time as production ramps up.

Sorry, I needed to make a correction or two on this video. So, I pulled down the one created 5/20. Was planning on updating the next day, but we had a break-in to contend with, no internet, no UA-cam. But, while hanging out overnight at the shop with an open door and a 357 in my lap, I took care of my errors and omissions. I had some bad info, given new rod series and my eagerness to get the word out. Corrected here. On the old video (2 days old) I did not mention Luc from Anglers Choice who provided some input on this product series. He gets some credit on this one. The unique unibutt was first shown off by John at Okuma a couple years ago, found one home on their kite rod, now on full production rods. The first group of rods came into country recently, they will be very short in supply until the factory ramps up production, the Wuhan Virus is not helpful moving this along faster. USA inventory will dry up early unfortunately early summer 2020. By fall, stock availability should improve..

As of this date Okuma has not decided if they will offer the new unibutts as a stand alone product for the rod building community. We are encouraging them to do so...

Would you recommend the XH straight-unibutt version of this rod paired with a Mak130 SEa II for LBSF with a drone? Or do you think a Barrett, Terra Firma, or SFWW rod would be better for my purposes? Feel like the roller tips might take off a lot of the stress from reeling in big sharks. Thanks for your videos and information. I'm planning on using 200-lb braid with a mono top shot.

Good questions, answers need to be based upon your application and approach. A bent butt rod really has a couple of uses, fishing from a chair or to bring trolling line down, closer to the water when in a trolling situation: better tracking of lure. I’m going to assume you’re land based shaking. If that’s the application a bent butt probably isnt what I’ll suggest. I would suggest a standup style rod which is designed for the drag load you should be running if you’re getting set up for 200lb line. Rod choice would likely be a “rail rod” from United Composites 70 or 76 Gladiator.
Best always to contact us personally at our shop. I’m only available weekday mornings, my son Sergey can also field your questions and help with recommendations.
A 130 fished standup style…, that’s quite a load if you’re not in a chair. An 80 is easier to handle standup. Depending upon the drag load you are willing/capable of handling it may not be worth the weight and bulk. I’d want to discuss things further with you to be sure you’re getting outfitted with gear you’ll want to fish, hard and often.

You're hearing the flex coat break in. No worries, it's common, UC, Calstar, Seeker all will do the same on new rods. The thicker the flex coat, the more you'll hear initially.

@@realrecognizereal3758 Leaving rod in rod holder? Yes, the bent butt versions are most often used in that manner if I'm following your question correctly.

357 on my lap, that’s what it’s taking nowadays, nobody goes to jail anymore. This policy of no bail, no consequences will end badly, more so for the criminal. Wait I forgot, you’d go to jail for protecting yourself. 🤬
