I remember being super little and there was this one episode where papa bear was slowly aproaching his son with those dark bags in his eyes ready to give him his beating while the son was crying in fear and it really messed me up. Not sure if its a real episode or just a fever dream i had.
Real episode, sadly, I know the one you're talking about because it made me a little scared. That particular incident thankfully didn't end up with Junior getting beat up, just Henry covered in honey.

Of course, Papa is angry. His wife obviously had an affair with Smokey the Bear, and she got pregnant. Why else would Junior be two feet taller than Papa? Junior's lack of smarts could be explained by Momma Bear smoking during pregnancy.

Junyer is usually doing something stupid without realizing it, like laughing at the comics and digging his head into the newspaper that the Papa bear was reading, or hogging all the honey on 1 slice of toast.
"But...Henryyy..." Yes, I remember us watching these as kids in the 70s and finding them very funny. But it's important to remember that we always understood that Papa Bear was wrong to do that, and that the cartoon represented what we would call a 'dysfunctional family' as we got older. And unfortunately, we all knew even as kids that such families weren't uncommon or were even a bit too close to home. The cartoonists must have known this too, and never showed Papa Bear as a sympathetic character and he usually got his comeuppance by the end.
Yeah. We all should know that in this family, Junyer Bear is the idiotic but well-meaning son, while Papa Bear is the fiery-tempered antagonist (of the trio), and Mama Bear is somewhat the straight man of the trio. Here is of the full list of comeuppances Papa Bear received in the end: 1. Bugs Bunny and the Three Bears (1944): Got told off by Mama Bear for harming Bugs Bunny whom she fell in love with, along with Junyer Bear. 2. What's Brewin' Bruin (1948): Once Papa Bear was able to get some good night sleep for his winter hibernation, springtime calls very quickly as soon as he goes to sleep, disturbing his sleep in the process. 3. The Bee-Devilled Bruin (1949): The one cartoon where Papa Bear was at his most abusive, and the only cartoon which I felt he had the most satisfying comeuppance. Once Papa Bear accidentally broke all the jars of honey from the cabinet, he then quickly realized that he did something wrong to his family that he got so much bad luck and starts breaking down crying. Soon enough, a bee then appears on his nose, which Papa Bear desperately tries to put the bee on his nose to sleep while crying, which Junyer Bear (off-screen) whacks the bee with a shovel, hence whacking Papa Bear in the face at the same time, and therefore Junyer possibly finally got his revenge on his father all the abusive treatment he received from him in the process. 4. Bear Feat (1949): Similar as in the ending of The Bee-Devilled Bruin (1949), once Papa Bear realized the truth that the newspaper he read which had the trick bear ad job application came out in 1928 instead of 1949, just as Junyer Bear cowers in fear on Mama Bear's arms, Papa Bear then quickly realized that he did something wrong to his family that he got so much bad luck and starts breaking down crying. He then attempts to commit suicide by jumping off the cliff, only for Junyer Bear to spare him from suicide. 5. A Bear For Punishment (1951): In the last and the funniest of all five Three Bears cartoons, Papa Bear realizes that he has been an awful father when both Junyer Bear and Mama Bear remembered Father's Day (evident when he briefly turns into a heel, which means an utter jerk), and so when Junyer Bear and Mama Bear go on celebrating Father's Day, it turns out to be a huge cringe-fest for Papa Bear, and so Papa Bear is even subjected to humiliation from both Junyer Bear and Mama Bear's final musical performance!
I know this may be unrelated, but sure Papa Bear and Clint Clobber/Fat Man from three Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry cartoons ("Down and Outing" [1961], "High Steaks" [1962], "Sorry Safari" [1962]) are both grouchy men with bad tempers and are easily irritated, but what sets Papa Bear apart from his similarly-behaved angry counterpart from the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts known as Clint Clobber/Fat Man are a few things; 1. When Papa Bear beats up his son Junyer Bear in the Looney Tunes shorts, its only when Junyer does something stupid, because for one thing, it's hilarious, and it never went overly mean spirited/harsh because the violence is cartoonish and funny. But when Clint Clobber/Fat Man beats up Tom in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts, it's however a completely different story, as he beats up Tom for very little reason, thinking that it's Tom who did it all along when actually Jerry is the one who did it, and the violence is rather brutal, hurtful and realistic that it crosses animal abuse territory to the point that it is not funny. 2. When Junyer Bear gets beaten by Papa Bear in the Looney Tunes shorts, he appears to be practically fine most of the time, except for some brief moments where Junyer would briefly cry "What did I do?" and then quickly remains emotionally okay in the next scene, and was rarely ever scared to death of Papa Bear. But when Tom gets beaten by Clint Clobber/Fat Man in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts, Tom appears to be extremely scared to death of his abusive owner, and many times driven to a serious nervous breakdown in ways that not even Spike the Bulldog would do to Tom, like in the ending of "Down and Outing" (1961). 3. When Junyer Bear gets beaten by Papa Bear in the Looney Tunes shorts, it's often both Junyer Bear and Papa Bear's own faults due to Junyer Bear's stupidity even though he doesn't mean it and Papa Bear being a loose cannon that easily gets irritated. But when Tom gets beaten by Clint Clobber/Fat Man in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts, it's all because of Jerry, who has been badly flanderized into a flat-out sadistic jerk in these Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts, actually caused trouble or harmed Clint Clobber/Fat Man ON PURPOSE so that he could get Tom tortured to death to satisfy is own amusement while Tom had absolutely nothing to do with it, and Clint Clobber/Fat Man is stupid enough to not notice Jerry and outright blames Tom without doing any research. 4. As temperamental Papa Bear is, at least he has a much better control in his temper (by a margin) than Clint Clobber/Fat Man in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts, since the latter is constantly grumbling in anger in the most horrific way possible 99% of the time which Papa Bear himself wouldn't even dare to do! 5. In the Looney Tunes shorts, the Three Bears by itself play out as a comedy trio, with the more level-headed Mama Bear being the straight man of the trio, hence softening the amount of harshness and mean-spiritedness that Junyer Bear receives from Papa Bear and making it don't seem like an evil Junyer Bear torture fest at all. But in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts however it plays out as a straight-out evil Tom torture porn where Jerry outright causes trouble to Clint Clobber/Fat Man, and Clint Clobber/Fat Man beats up his cat Tom (who doesn't even do anything wrong) in the worst possible ways, and Jerry laughs at Tom's misery, and to make matters worse, there are no nice, level-headed characters to reduce the amount of unnecessary cruelty in the scenario which consists of two jerks (Clint Clobber/Fat Man and Jerry) against one (Tom). 6. While Papa Bear at least usually got his comeuppance by the end, Clint Clobber/Fat Man in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts on the other hand doesn't receive any comeuppances for the abuse he did on Tom, except for "Sorry Safari" (1962). In addition, in the Three Bears cartoons there are rare occasions where Junyer Bear himself would receive a happy ending when Papa Bear gets defeated (e.g. "The Bee-Devilled Bruin" (1949) and "A Bear For Punishment" (1951)), while Tom on the other hand NEVER had a happy ending in not just the three Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry cartoons which is abusive owner Clint Clobber/Fat Man appears in ("Down and Outing" [1961], "High Steaks" [1962], "Sorry Safari" [1962]), but in ALL the Tom and Jerry cartoons in the Gene Deitch era. In short, all these just show on how animation director Chuck Jones was able to make a mean-sprited scenario such as dysfunctional families and child abuse for examples as something that is genuinely funny without being too mean-spirited and harsh that it infuriates the audience, as reflected in his Three Bears cartoons, and even his Hubie and Bertie cartoons. Gene Deitch on the other hand when directing the Tom and Jerry cartoons back in 1961-1962, appears to do a terrible job at making mean-spirited scenarios funny and instead the results comes off as infuriatingly cruel and mean-spirited, given from the fact that Deitch himself hated Tom and Jerry due to he finding it "needlessly violent and mean-spirited".

The rest of that comment is only directed at censorious people who take cartoons like this way too seriously, think that cartoons like this condone or glorify abusive behaviour and think that cartoons like this should be banned. Yes...people like that really exist...unfortunately. So I simply preempted such rubbish by pointing out that the cartoons were never intended or perceived to be that way, and that there is nothing wrong with portraying uncomfortable things in a humorous or satirical way. In fact it's probably very healthy to do so. As well as being very funny, of course. And yes, it's a pity that such basic things need to be pointed out at all, but one only has to think about recent kerfuffles over things like Apu in The Simpsons to realise that there are many grown adults today with zero sense of humour but with multiple chips on their shoulders instead.
This is the one single set of Looney Tunes Characters where I do understand why a sizable group of people don't find it funny, and may even find it hurtful. I do get it. And as someone in the comments pointed out, even though Papa Bear is not portrayed as a likable character nor does he prosper from his actions, his repeated failures seem to only fuel further violence. Keeping in mind that these cartoons were a product of the 1940s and 1950s, they were simply an accurate depiction of too many households at the time. Whether it is offensive to make humor of abusive fathers, I'll leave that to the viewers to decide. My take on it is that the writers never once glorify Papa Bear's behavior.

Actually the Baby Bear (forget his name) was meant to be a mentally disabled character, because when this cartoon was made//takes place, almost all cartoons had at least 1 mentally disabled character and also statistics show that those with mental disabilities are shown to get abused more often. Now, I am not saying that the dad is in the right, because he is very clearly in the WRONG, but I just wanted to let you know that and also, I don't know what a joke is.
Man.. Reading that this was actually based on someone's own dad really hits home..I was physically and emotionally abused almost all my childhood and it's now that i'm trying to sort through my traumas as an adult via therapy. People cope with their traumas in different ways. Some people pretend it never happened, some people try to cover it up, trying to portray their experiences into something funny, a comedy. And I think making it into a cutesy, silly cartoon was one way a person could cope with their abuse.. This really makes me sad.

I have already forgiven her for the damage she caused upon me as I feel like it wasn’t her fault. I feel that my grandparents are at more fault than she is and I especially feel that the most abuse I had to endure was when I was a teenager in high school and the teachers always got my parents to side with them. People who say things like "Its just a cartoon! It's for little kids!" shows how lazy, brain-dead, and unreasonable they are about things and subjects portrayed in pieces of media. Dumbing something down as "Its just a [insert media genre here]" does a huge disservice to what the creator(s) intended to show, or at the very least, relate to by means of portraying different themes, events, and topics that people (not just kids) can understand and enjoy. Pixar/Disney movies are very popular worldwide. Not because it's just a 3D/animation cartoon for kids (although it's for that demograph) but because of the themes and symbolism these movies/cartoons can illustrate and show, at the same time being an enjoyable and funny experience for all ages. In this case with the 3 bears, it's a product of it's time, where domestic abuse was not uncommon in the American household. As satirical and humorous as it may be to some to see Papa bear wallop and bop around Baby bear, do not think that it's only done for the purpose of just getting some chuckles and giggles from the kiddies. Cartoons are much more than just pieces of acts, slapstick and dialogues for kids. It's why, even as adults, we still flock back to these times of our childhood and remember these shows. But we look at it as older, more mature individuals who can see the faults and realism of these shows. Of course kids wont see what we see, but when they grow up, they too will look back on their favorite shows and see more meaning in it than when they first watched it, as we all have.

I was talking about how things portrayed in different genres of media for kids (Movies, video games, books, etc.) can have multiple meanings and mature themes for all ages to understand, learn from, and enjoy than just dismissing it as only for kids. Nothing to do with the world being a violent place. As for teaching your kid what "a good slap taste like", disciplining and beating your child are not mutually exclusive. There are other ways to teaching your child how the world can be cruel without inflicting unnecessary pain on them. Dont know if you really do or not, but I wont tell you how to raise your kids. Yes, I remember us watching these as kids in the 70s and finding them very funny.
But it's important to remember that we always understood that Papa Bear was wrong to do that, and that the cartoon represented what we would call a 'dysfunctional family' as we got older.
And unfortunately, we all knew even as kids that such families weren't uncommon or were even a bit too close to home.
The cartoonists must have known this too, and never showed Papa Bear as a sympathetic character and he usually got his comeuppance by the end.
Yeah. We all should know that in this family, Junyer Bear is the idiotic but well-meaning son, while Papa Bear is the fiery-tempered antagonist (of the trio), and Mama Bear is somewhat the straight man of the trio.
Here is of the full list of comeuppances Papa Bear received in the end:
1. Bugs Bunny and the Three Bears (1944): Got told off by Mama Bear for harming Bugs Bunny whom she fell in love with, along with Junyer Bear.
2. What's Brewin' Bruin (1948): Once Papa Bear was able to get some good night sleep for his winter hibernation, springtime calls very quickly as soon as he goes to sleep, disturbing his sleep in the process.
3. The Bee-Devilled Bruin (1949): The one cartoon where Papa Bear was at his most abusive, and the only cartoon which I felt he had the most satisfying comeuppance. Once Papa Bear accidentally broke all the jars of honey from the cabinet, he then quickly realized that he did something wrong to his family that he got so much bad luck and starts breaking down crying. Soon enough, a bee then appears on his nose, which Papa Bear desperately tries to put the bee on his nose to sleep while crying, which Junyer Bear (off-screen) whacks the bee with a shovel, hence whacking Papa Bear in the face at the same time, and therefore Junyer possibly finally got his revenge on his father all the abusive treatment he received from him in the process.
4. Bear Feat (1949): Similar as in the ending of The Bee-Devilled Bruin (1949), once Papa Bear realized the truth that the newspaper he read which had the trick bear ad job application came out in 1928 instead of 1949, just as Junyer Bear cowers in fear on Mama Bear's arms, Papa Bear then quickly realized that he did something wrong to his family that he got so much bad luck and starts breaking down crying. He then attempts to commit suicide by jumping off the cliff, only for Junyer Bear to spare him from suicide.
5. A Bear For Punishment (1951): In the last and the funniest of all five Three Bears cartoons, Papa Bear realizes that he has been an awful father when both Junyer Bear and Mama Bear remembered Father's Day (evident when he briefly turns into a heel, which means an utter jerk), and so when Junyer Bear and Mama Bear go on celebrating Father's Day, it turns out to be a huge cringe-fest for Papa Bear, and so Papa Bear is even subjected to humiliation from both Junyer Bear and Mama Bear's final musical performance!
I know this may be unrelated, but sure Papa Bear and Clint Clobber/Fat Man from three Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry cartoons ("Down and Outing" [1961], "High Steaks" [1962], "Sorry Safari" [1962]) are both grouchy men with bad tempers and are easily irritated, but what sets Papa Bear apart from his similarly-behaved angry counterpart from the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts known as Clint Clobber/Fat Man are a few things;
1.
When Papa Bear beats up his son Junyer Bear in the Looney Tunes shorts, its only when Junyer does something stupid, because for one thing, it's hilarious, and it never went overly mean spirited/harsh because the violence is cartoonish and funny. But when Clint Clobber/Fat Man beats up Tom in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts, it's however a completely different story, as he beats up Tom for very little reason, thinking that it's Tom who did it all along when actually Jerry is the one who did it, and the violence is rather brutal, hurtful and realistic that it crosses animal abuse territory to the point that it is not funny.
2. When Junyer Bear gets beaten by Papa Bear in the Looney Tunes shorts, he appears to be practically fine most of the time, except for some brief moments where Junyer would briefly cry "What did I do?" and then quickly remains emotionally okay in the next scene, and was rarely ever scared to death of Papa Bear. But when Tom gets beaten by Clint Clobber/Fat Man in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts, Tom appears to be extremely scared to death of his abusive owner, and many times driven to a serious nervous breakdown in ways that not even Spike the Bulldog would do to Tom, like in the ending of "Down and Outing" (1961).
3. When Junyer Bear gets beaten by Papa Bear in the Looney Tunes shorts, it's often both Junyer Bear and Papa Bear's own faults due to Junyer Bear's stupidity even though he doesn't mean it and Papa Bear being a loose cannon that easily gets irritated. But when Tom gets beaten by Clint Clobber/Fat Man in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts, it's all because of Jerry, who has been badly flanderized into a flat-out sadistic jerk in these Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts, actually caused trouble or harmed Clint Clobber/Fat Man ON PURPOSE so that he could get Tom tortured to death to satisfy is own amusement while Tom had absolutely nothing to do with it, and Clint Clobber/Fat Man is stupid enough to not notice Jerry and outright blames Tom without doing any research.
4. As temperamental Papa Bear is, at least he has a much better control in his temper (by a margin) than Clint Clobber/Fat Man in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts, since the latter is constantly grumbling in anger in the most horrific way possible 99% of the time which Papa Bear himself wouldn't even dare to do!
5. In the Looney Tunes shorts, the Three Bears by itself play out as a comedy trio, with the more level-headed Mama Bear being the straight man of the trio, hence softening the amount of harshness and mean-spiritedness that Junyer Bear receives from Papa Bear and making it don't seem like an evil Junyer Bear torture fest at all. But in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts however it plays out as a straight-out evil Tom torture porn where Jerry outright causes trouble to Clint Clobber/Fat Man, and Clint Clobber/Fat Man beats up his cat Tom (who doesn't even do anything wrong) in the worst possible ways, and Jerry laughs at Tom's misery, and to make matters worse, there are no nice, level-headed characters to reduce the amount of unnecessary cruelty in the scenario which consists of two jerks (Clint Clobber/Fat Man and Jerry) against one (Tom).
6. While Papa Bear at least usually got his comeuppance by the end, Clint Clobber/Fat Man in the Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry shorts on the other hand doesn't receive any comeuppances for the abuse he did on Tom, except for "Sorry Safari" (1962). In addition, in the Three Bears cartoons there are rare occasions where Junyer Bear himself would receive a happy ending when Papa Bear gets defeated (e.g. "The Bee-Devilled Bruin" (1949) and "A Bear For Punishment" (1951)), while Tom on the other hand NEVER had a happy ending in not just the three Gene Deitch-era Tom and Jerry cartoons which is abusive owner Clint Clobber/Fat Man appears in ("Down and Outing" [1961], "High Steaks" [1962], "Sorry Safari" [1962]), but in ALL the Tom and Jerry cartoons in the Gene Deitch era.
In short, all these just show on how animation director Chuck Jones was able to make a mean-sprited scenario such as dysfunctional families and child abuse for examples as something that is genuinely funny without being too mean-spirited and harsh that it infuriates the audience, as reflected in his Three Bears cartoons, and even his Hubie and Bertie cartoons. Gene Deitch on the other hand when directing the Tom and Jerry cartoons back in 1961-1962, appears to do a terrible job at making mean-spirited scenarios funny and instead the results comes off as infuriatingly cruel and mean-spirited, given from the fact that Deitch himself hated Tom and Jerry due to he finding it "needlessly violent and mean-spirited".

This is the one single set of Looney Tunes Characters where I do understand why a sizable group of people don't find it funny, and may even find it hurtful. I do get it. And as someone in the comments pointed out, even though Papa Bear is not portrayed as a likable character nor does he prosper from his actions, his repeated failures seem to only fuel further violence. Keeping in mind that these cartoons were a product of the 1940s and 1950s, they were simply an accurate depiction of too many households at the time. Whether it is offensive to make humor of abusive fathers, I'll leave that to the viewers to decide. My take on it is that the writers never once glorify Papa Bear's behavior.

Man.. Reading that this was actually based on someone's own dad really hits home..I was physically and emotionally abused almost all my childhood and it's now that i'm trying to sort through my traumas as an adult via therapy. People cope with their traumas in different ways. Some people pretend it never happened, some people try to cover it up, trying to portray their experiences into something funny, a comedy. And I think making it into a cutesy, silly cartoon was one way a person could cope with their abuse.. This really makes me sad.

I have already forgiven her for the damage she caused upon me as I feel like it wasn’t her fault. I feel that my grandparents are at more fault than she is and I especially feel that the most abuse I had to endure was when I was a teenager in high school and the teachers always got my parents to side with them. I could go on about how horrible my high school years were and how I feel that’s where I was mostly abused as well as I believe having been traumatized as well. People who say things like "Its just a cartoon! It's for little kids!" shows how lazy, brain-dead, and unreasonable they are about things and subjects portrayed in pieces of media.
Dumbing something down as "Its just a [insert media genre here]" does a huge disservice to what the creator(s) intended to show, or at the very least, relate to by means of portraying different themes, events, and topics that people (not just kids) can understand and enjoy.
Pixar/Disney movies are very popular worldwide. Not because it's just a 3D/animation cartoon for kids (although it's for that demograph) but because of the themes and symbolism these movies/cartoons can illustrate and show, at the same time being an enjoyable and funny experience for all ages.
In this case with the 3 bears, it's a product of it's time, where domestic abuse was not uncommon in the American household. As satirical and humorous as it may be to some to see Papa bear wallop and bop around Baby bear, do not think that it's only done for the purpose of just getting some chuckles and giggles from the kiddies. Cartoons are much more than just pieces of acts, slapstick and dialogues for kids. It's why, even as adults, we still flock back to these times of our childhood and remember these shows. But we look at it as older, more mature individuals who can see the faults and realism of these shows. Of course kids wont see what we see, but when they grow up, they too will look back on their favorite shows and see more meaning in it than when they first watched it, as we all have.

I was talking about how things portrayed in different genres of media for kids (Movies, video games, books, etc.) can have multiple meanings and mature themes for all ages to understand, learn from, and enjoy than just dismissing it as only for kids. Nothing to do with the world being a violent place.
As for teaching your kid what "a good slap taste like", disciplining and beating your child are not mutually exclusive. There are other ways to teaching your child how the world can be cruel without inflicting unnecessary pain on them. Dont know if you really do or not, but I wont tell you how to raise your kids. That's not my business.
The problem is; nowadays they Pixar and Disney just don't have the balls for this kind of thing anymore. Now it's all about self-acceptance or some shit, and it's everywhere.
