We speak with the mother of Hisham Awartani, one of the three 20-year-old Palestinian college students who were shot last weekend in Burlington, Vermont, in a suspected hate crime. Elizabeth Price traveled from her home in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank to see her son, who is still hospitalized in Burlington. He was shot in the spine and, while in stable condition, now faces an immediate loss of mobility. Price shares how her son's "resilience" and "brotherhood" with his childhood best friends who are the other survivors of the shooting, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ali Ahmad, have been an integral part of his recovery. She also emphasizes that had Awartani been shot in Palestine, "he would have been dead in prison or thrown somewhere in a medical facility without the support to recover from this." We also discuss life under occupation in the West Bank, U.S. displays of solidarity with Palestinians, and the media narrative surrounding the shooter's motives. Of the three young men's commitment to highlighting the larger picture of Israeli oppression of Palestine, Price says that "the fact that the Israelis have started bombarding again in the Gaza Strip is something that will crush them more than their injuries."

Yes, agreed: this was a deeply thoughtful response to trauma, infused with hope. Regarding solidarity, numbers, and physical support for the many new people now living with life-altering injuries that did not have the medical care and circumstances that he acknowledges, including amputations...Does anyone have ideas for mass production and specialties for prosthetics, and how to one day create accessibility for this service? What about 3D printed carbon fiber and community-based centers that offer training and expertise? The buildings of the future could also include more universal design to help wheelchair users, and people with various types of mobility aids, navigate them.

Hamas - the acronym for Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya, meaning "Islamic Resistance Movement", not "Free Palestinian Movement", they don't care about Palestine and Palestinians.
It's not a freedom fighter organization like the IRA fighting England to get it out of Ireland, it's, as you saw on October 7, a brutal Islamic organization, like ISIS, that wants to destroy Israel by killing Jews in Israel, i.e. genocide.
Their Islamic belief is that the land of the State of Israel is a holy land of Islam, and therefore they must conquer and return it to Islam.
Read the Hamas charter, do your own research.

Wow - what an interview! I am so impressed, and grateful for the three young friends recovering and getting support including from Jewish people. And I am glad to hear Elizabeth Price reminding us about the implications of mental health or otherwise, because persons with mental health issues are much more often the victims of violence than the perpetrators. May all 3 shooting victims make a full recovery, especially when Hisham's injuries will take a long time to heal.

He and his friends and family have been through this grotesque example of hatred playing out in microcosm while it continues on the macrocosm on the other side of the world. It shows the inescapably of all of us to things that happen far away but how the ripples reach everywhere and intersect in terrible ways other to other webs of hatred and myopia of spirit. His words are so profound because he is immediately able to connect his experiences to larger issues with those who do not get the spotlight as individuals. He instantly speaks from a place of love and support in the middle of the worst crisis of his own life. This is hope for the future. I think this event is a moment where we all have the opportunity to reflect on this profound response in a moment of extreme crisis and shock, not of retaliation or further violence, but with a clear intent to make powerful, positive connections and express love in the face of hate. If one human can respond in this way, then it can and should be seen as the goal of nations. His family is not reacting with revenge in their actions but rather expressing gratitude for his being and using this misfortune as a way to model a wiser and kinder response. ❤

TY Democracy Now, AND to this young person's thoughtful statement. From my point of view, as a 75 yo Latina/American Indian woman, every day brings joy with the sun rising, yet also heartbreak, with the News of wars, suffering, and cruelty from a lack of Humanity. Indeed, nature can be harsh, even while bringing expansive beauty, hope and joy. But, this unnecessary suffering, brought by revenge & ignorance, perpetrated by Powerful humans...this is unexpected after ALL our historic lessons. That the US shares in responsibility by sharing weapons, and by its refusal to criticize, condemn and refuse becoming part of a solution. I married for 34 yrs with an Israeli/American Jew, who expressed his prejudices & fears of the Palestanian Leadership, even while having friends from Gaza & rejecting the Occupation. He has passed from this World, but his trauma & fears had lasting effects on me, even while making me all the more supportive of the Human Rights deserved all beings, and in this case, the Palestinian ppl in general. When I was 60 my husband lost his mind & forced me to move out, however, I spent 3+ yrs caring for a quadroplegic man, so I wish to extend all positive wishes and thoughts to this young man, who has this injury. AND, encourage him to know and believe in the power" of his will to make a difference, and contribute more Humanity, more Wisdom and Truth and more Help to our ailing world.
