I've seen some prety bad campgrounds in my time, Zapata is right there with them ! You're basically camping on the side of a dusty road no shade , no wind protection. Pretty much an RV / Camper trailer campground because I cant imagine being in a tent in this location. The amount of dust is endless !
We are planning a six week trip to CO & UT from FL later this year. Great Sand Dunes Nat Pk is our last stop before heading home. Was planning to boondock on Lake Como Rd just a bit S of here. These views look amazing! Do you think a 36’ class A gas motorhome (pulling a Jeep) will be ok on the road coming in? It looks a little rough, I can go slow, just don’t want to rattle everything apart. (Our interstates do a good enough job of that. Lol). They have several sites big enough to hold us, just wasn’t sure of ghe road.
We haven't been up there in the last 18-24 months. Based on what it looked like last time, I think it would be pretty rough on the contents of your motorhome. Mosca Campground is down in the valley and would be easier getting into. Here's the video of it: ua-cam.com/video/N4w0_hqz3yI/v-deo.html I guess you could unhitch the Jeep and check out the road up to Zapata Falls to see what you think.
What camera did you use for your videos? I particularly like the feature with the compass and elevation that you use on some of your videos, as I am sensitive to high elevations, being a flatlander down here in Texas. Is that a special app?
GoPro. It's been hit and miss on whether it will capture the GPS data. I don't find out until I get home and start editing. I gave up on it for awhile because it would only work 1 out of 10 times. Haven't tried it yet with the latest model to see if they fixed it.
That's Ellingwood peak. Blanca is behind it. Two 14ers. That's my truck, trailer, and bike at the camphost site. Hope you enjoyed your visit. Love your videos, and stay safe in your travels.
We went there when the fall was frozen. Incredibly beautiful. There were butterflies flying around. Cool video, always down for a revisit. Our camp host was a great guy too!
I enjoyed this video, the first one of your series I have viewed. You provide a great level of detail of not only the campground, but of the surrounding area. Thanks.
Awesome, just what I needed. I'm staying at Lathrop tomorrow night with a reservation. And then I'm on to Zapato for a first come first serve campsite where I may stay up to a week. Your in-depth coverage of each and every campsite was very interesting especially for me. I also liked the way you added other local color about the surrounding area. The only thing you might have added would have been the volume of campers in the area by season. I understand that now in June this area will only have a few sites open for a brief window around 11 AM.
If you show up in the middle of the week, you will have a good chance of getting a site. The rough road going up will help turn away potential campers looking for an easier place to camp.
I wish someone would do videos this informative for other states too like South Dakota, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, and Montana. Thanks for taking the time to do these.
Thanks for the kind words. Check out our interactive map of the campgrounds we have visited at CampgroundRecon.com We have recorded 6 campgrounds in Utah. South Dakota is most likely on our list in 2020. We also have a couple from Missouri & Kansas that need to be edited in the coming months.
The road looks better than Eleven Mile Canyon? I love the views!!! Could you add links to hiking , OHV trails near the camp grounds . AND have a Blessed Day , Thank You.
I'm planning some motorcycle camping trips this summer and have found your videos very informative. They give me a good idea of what the camp grounds are like. Most videos of camping areas are of guys walking around taking selfies and not much information about the actual campground. Well done.
Great work, your videos are very helpful!! 😎👍
Great videos! ❤
wow what a great informative video!! I'm going here in a few weeks and this helps so much. thanks for sharing
Thanks for the video. Camping in Site 14 this summer.
Awesome! The views are great up there

It's not bad if you pull in just for the night. I stayed here in 2018 pulled in past dark and slept in my vehicle 😂
Great video & info but maybe I missed it, you made no mention of hiking trails
The Zapata Falls Trail is just outside of the campground. We start the video in the parking lot at the trailhead

Also, some camp sites have a vast woods to spread out into, some don’t. We were on the upper side of the loop and had a lot of extra space.
Thanks you really helped us. Were driving in from TX
Glad to help out!
Colorado Gators is on a natural Hot Spring & that's how they survive the winter.
views of Blanca and the valley are magical here.
I agree. It is a special place.
Dangerous valley,but very beautiful
Thanks for the video!! We're planning a trip to Great Sand Dunes and this video is immensely helpful!
Glad we could help. Road up is a bit rough but this would be my pick for camping near the sand dunes.

Great video 👍
Thanks!
These are great especially since our rig will be here soon. These are all in our stomping grounds.

Pretty comparable to Eleven Mile. I edited out 10-12 minutes of the bumpiest parts.
Please learn the correct pronunciation of places you feature. Zapata has an emphasis on the second syllable, and the vowels are soft.
Appreciate the correction. Occasionally one slips by me

Biggest thing with the economy is ag.... yep everyone in the valley grows weed lol. spinach not so much.
