This is what Sting said in his lyrics book:
"This song was as much as a hymn to my newfound freedom as it was an antidote to the brooding issues of control and surveilance that haunted 'Every Breath You Take.' Perhaps the highest compliment you can pay to a partner is 'I don't own you--you're free.' If you were to try to possess them in the obvious way, you could never appreciate them in the way that really counts. There are too many prisons in the world already" (Sting 99).

It’s the ultimate act of love to set them free. Even if it means they will never be with you. They may not find love with you but eventually they will with the right person.

This song takes me back to the early days with the absolute love of my life. We had 12-1/2 irreplacable years together before he unexpectedly climbed his personal stairway to Heaven. I have learned to move on with my life, and only part of my heart; yet whenever I hear this song by Sting, I am immediately transported back to that magical summer of 1985, new love, true love, and boundless passion with the love of my life.

The response to unrequited love. Easier said than done.
When two people meet with an incredible connection and can’t seem to stay away from each other no matter what they try to do, it can be extremely hard especially when one is married but yet has never felt this kind of connection of love, compassion, the kind you hear people say is once in a lifetime love that has never experienced with anyone ever in their life including the one they are married to. So this song comes to play because you must set them free … if they truly love you they will make changes in their life to be with you. No matter what. They can’t help it. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve experienced this yourself.

Actually, this song was a major hit in 1985, staying at the #1 spot for three weeks. Other than that, this is one of Sting's precious jewels that I've been searching for since I could remember, until not too long ago the name of the song crept up on me. I love this song even more since then. :)

Sting is on record as saying this is the sorta antidote (can't remember the actual wording he used was along time ago I read it) to Every Breath You Take - which many people think is a love song! Nope Every Breath You Take is about Possession and Stalking. As we all know.
