Perhaps long forgotten, CSNY did capture some great vintage tones even from their inception in a live setting -- a challenging thing to do -- with their Martins and their wopper sound system. I always suspected they were playing early 60's guitars. I also suspected their sound system cost a fortune because I never heard a bluegrass band (on a much tighter budget) even with vintage guitars capture the tone live so well.

I heard a Pre-War brazilian for the first time yesterday and was flabbergasted by its video demo. It had just gone up for sale but was already sold. I couldn't find the company on the web, but this video choice was eventually fed to me in another context.

Older video, this is one of the best videos I've seen on guitar comparison, love all the vintage guitars 🎸like he said every guitar has its own character, they all have their own sound, the Atkin guitars sound really good, also the Eric Clapton models were really great, one great video, whether he's knows or not, he's in guitar heaven, he's surrounded by some beautiful guitars, THANKS for sharing, amazing video, SUBSCRIBED.

what strings were on the Pre War 18? What flat pick and thickness were you using?

Here in the States we only have 3 Atkin's Dealers, so their products are not as widely known as Pre-War or Martin. The Pre-War models are less expensive than the Martin's, but more expensive than the Atkins. I have a Martin D-18 Authentic 1939 Aged (39AA), and it has relic features about like the Pre-War. You're not a Martin dealer so I can understand why you didn't include a 39AA in your review. But, you are an Atkin and Pre-War dealer, and they do sound very nice. It's too bad that we don't have more Atkin dealers here in the States. Very nice review of these versus the Vintage models.

the oldest guitar i have, or have had, is a 66 j45 which at the moment is mind blowing.
i have quite a few (badly played) comparison videos on my own channel, cos in 2013 i started buying and selling guitars hoping to start a shop, i've had at least fifty guitars, mainly acoustic, since then, and i have a handful of "keepers", but i was concerned that my j45 was more "hype" than "talent" cos i did some recordings and i found it hard to tell the difference between my beloved j45, that i've had since the 70's, and a £25 banger i just got last week.
my take on the subject is that it's all, er, subjective. for some reason the j45 this last month is sounding better than i remember, i'd actually call it mind blowing. i have no idea why it's gone from "pretty damn good" to "mind blowing" but it has.
the other oddity, and at the other end of the spectrum, is the martin i picked up cheap - £350 with case - that sounds to me like the best acoustic guitar in the world. this is partly why i had my doubts about the j45, this martin is the cheapest martin you can buy, mine is a 2004 made in the USA model, which may be the reason it's so good, i'm guessing it's a prototype made to compare to the mexico models, but, i also i have 2016 mexico model which _should_ be identical, but it sounds entirely different. the martin's claim to fame is it's spruce top, but "plastic" back and sides, HPL - whatever that is, martin don't tell - it's like a kitchen worktop - but they _both_ sound amazing, even with year old strings.
and that's what i mean, it's all subjective. tommy emmanuel even says that guitars get fed up with strings, and you have to change brand now and then to keep them happy. anyway, part of the reason my playing sounds the same on all my guitars is that i play with my nails, they grow 1mm per week (no, really) and they are like steel. i would prefer to ping the strings with my fingertips, but my nails just shoot out. anyway, there are comparisons between alsorts of guitar combos on my own channel (warning - recording isn't top notch) if anyone has an hour to waste.

Pre war are excellent guitars but I bought a 2020 Gibson 1936 Advanced Jumbo that knocks my socks off. I think the torrified top is the key and way less lacquer. It’s so resonant it actually sounds like an old 36 L-00 I used to have but louder of course due to its size. They call it thermally aged but to me that’s just torrification. Had a 75 Martin D-28 that sounded amazing so I’m not sure about all the negative talk about 70s Martins besides some issues with bridge placement and Martin not using Brazilian rosewood. I can’t tell the difference between Brazilian and Indian frankly and I think most can’t either if you put them to a blind listen test but that’s just my opinion.

Great job on highlighting the various makers etc. great picking. The Atkins 43’ J-45 really shines in my Ear-I do favor the slope shoulder design. Atkins guitars seem to build an incredible massive Mid range presence In their guitars-not as much ringing treble. All the Pre -Wars sound awesome -the Martins as well. The OM/OOO’s always sound so good- Powerful yet balanced. That Dutch guitar has a sweetness-not as much projection-what’s the top on it? If it’s not Adirondack that could be why! The Sunburst OM you play at end is the Tone King!

Well done video and very interesting. I have a 1971 Martin D 35. When does a guitar become vintage?

    • @EasyBreather000

I think a guitar becomes 'vintage' after 25 years of existence. Some will no doubt disagree, that's okay.

You may know this, but what makes the pre WWII special is the wood they were made from, much of which was depleted (I've heard) for the war effort, build quality and scarcity. I'm not knocking your 1971, I'd love one, but I'm not sure that's an era that Martins were know for. I'm not a guitar expert, I've just watch UA-cam videos :) I have a 1992 Yamaha, will never be special to anyone but me :)
I almost bought a 1970's D18 but was convinced not to buy an "expert" that only thought "pre-war" Martins were good. Often I wish I wouldn't have listed to him...

Junker sound like there is an orchestra inside ( it’s big sound wise for the small body)

This Martijn van Agt is a phenomenal guitarist. But there is no commercial market for guitarists except small parts hidden deep in the envelop of lifeless modern songs. This is a tragedy. If anyone could escape that it would be Martijn to bring the instrument back into the forefront. And it would be on a Martin style accoustic guitar. So, you-all, enjoy your modern raw and lifeless cookie-dough singers from Madonna to John Mayer instead.

Im no John Mayer fan, but he has done infinitely more for the acoustic guitar than any other artist in the international mainstream.

So you are comparing Madonna to John Mayer? Sorry my friend, but this just illustrates how out of touch you are with today's music.
