My Grandfather was a coppersmith and he would do this with old British penny pieces. He didn't have any of the hardware at his disposal that is used here, he used a blow torch, a small hammer and a metal 'form'' to work around. The finished articles were brilliant!
@Praise Jesus, Repent or Likewise Perish Blessed are the destroyers of false hope, for they are the true Messiahs - Cursed are the god-adorers, for they shall be shorn sheep!
We did the hammer job when I first enlisted in the military, and I also spent hours and hours of filing a metal block only for the instructor to throw it away into the scrap bin and I had to start again.
During World War II, my uncle made a wedding ring for my aunt out of a silver coin while he was on a troop ship on his way to the Pacific. The only tools he had were a 40 penny nail and a pipe near his bunk to bang it on.
Amazing! I lived in Germany as a young boy while my father was stationed there, and 5 DM was a lot of money to me. One day I found a 5 DM coin and I can still remember how elated I was! I have ordered one of these rings for myself.
But all were deceived for another ring was made! In the lands of Belgium. In the fires of mount Brussels, there in secret the dark lord forged a master ring! The Euro! One ring to rule them all. One ring to find them. And to the European Union bind them!
Not far from the fiery peaks of mount Brussels were the Hungarians, also known as Magyars. They were an ancient mortal race that lived in Middle-earth. Although their exact origins are unknown, they were initially found in the eastern regions of Middle-earth and below the Vales of Anduin. At the beginning of the Third Age, Magyars moved north and west. Most of their race eventually founded the land of the Shire (Hungaria in their ancient tongue) in about the year AD 1001. Most Magyars enjoyed farming, food, wines, parties and the giving and receiving of presents and land grants. They were usually friendly and happy-go-lucky, although they were often shy of the Men of the West. When the dark lord used the One Euro to bring the lands of the west one by one under his spell, the Magyars fought the armies of the dark lord by vowing to keep their ancient, albeit worthless coins called Forint. With the War of the Ring escalating more and more Magyars brought out their last hidden Forints to fight the lost battle on the eve of total economic destruction.

Oh man from the thumbnail I instantly recognized it as a 5 Deutsche mark coin. I grew up in Germany for some years and I loved getting these as a child. German marks were pretty high value, about half the value of the current euro. Since I'm talking about the mid 1980s (taking into account inflation) it's pretty fair to assume that coin was about the same worth (at that time) as a 5 US dollar note today.
That’s an old one, though. They got discontinued during the mid-70s, whenI was around 10 years old. Too pricey because of the silver. IIRC they went out of circulation really fast.
