    To clear one thing up, if you're trying to get started, it's good to get a model portfolio together (in Brigitte's case, she did TFP with some freelance photographers) and send it to every agency you're interested in working with and post the shots on social media as well with relevant hashtags. That way, if the agencies you reach out to don't get back to you, another agency might see your stuff and scout you.
    (Adding On Because Lots Of Questions!)
    It is not illegal for foreigners to run their own UA-cam channel. But, if a foreigner appears in someone else's UA-cam content and was compensated for doing so, that is considered a "modeling/entertainment job". Although a lot of people do this, if they do not have either a modeling visa or a residency visa that doesn't have working restrictions, it is illegal. A lot of people do it anyway, thinking they won't get caught. But, as explained, immigration can find you if you get on their radar. So, it is not recommended. Otherwise, best to appear for free just to boost your portfolio. If you do not receive money, there is no issue.

    I am so glad you made this video. I agree about the misconceptions about how black girls look and we are represented poorly in some ways. I felt that last time I was there. The facts that one poorly made up girl basically becomes every black woman's representative. 🙄. Great video. Can you do some video about students and the do's and don'ts regarding working and banking and money saving tips?

      Yeah, I really wanted us to talk about it because I've never heard it talked about before on UA-cam. I used to be SO confused like... thank you, but why does everyone think I'm so pretty? So, I started trying to pay attention to what they were seeing and how we were being portrayed and it was like... oh, ok duh. Things have already changed A LOT for the better, but it's only because more people have decided to travel or live over here and pursue modeling/entertainment. Also more makeup lines in Korea have started carrying other shades of makeup while international brands have been breaking into the market as well.
      Also, I forgot the name of it, but there is an initiative that started here to visit makeup and hair styling training facilities and instruct them on the importance of knowing how to style black models. It's was actually started by a Korean woman which was really endearing to find out. It's really just a matter of lack of exposure, lack of supplies, and lack of models to choose from. So, I think it'll get better over time.

    • @MyRealLifeinKorea
      @MyRealLifeinKorea  2 роки тому

      @@nouharetro1377 Both Bibi and I already lived in Korea (although I'm not a model). My other model friends also already lived in Korea before applying to an agency. Some of them stayed in Korea while waiting for the visa (like Bibi did) and some of them left and came back after the visa was approved. I don't know for sure if you can or can't apply while outside of Korea. My best guess is that, while you might be able to get an agency to notice you even if you're not in Korea, you probably still need to physically visit their office to confirm your appearance, explain the contract, and set you up with a lawyer if you want help with the visa.

    I never thought of modeling as an option. I'm 5'3 maybe 5'4 on a good day, I'm not Korea's ideal version of thin and the last time I modeled was when I was elementary school aged. My current plan is to move to Korea after I get out of the military but my main stressor is what I will be able to do for work. I'm not too fond of teaching but that's the avenue 90% of people seem to be taking but I'm not too sure I can work as a model. Have you seen models around 5'3? I feel it's not common no matter what country your in but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try

      As long as you aren't trying to be a runway model or fashion model, your height shouldn't really matter. It also isn't required to have a body type that is "standard" in Korea. They will just have a brief for what "look" they are after and try to find someone who fits. For foreigners they usually are looking for ethnicities as the top priority, but it depends on the company and product

      Hmm I have friends who have modeled here in Korea and all over the world. My impression is that you're not really in control since the directors and producers will have a certain look that they are after. With this in mind, it might be difficult to pursue professional modeling if you're not ready to change your hair to match their vision. This would be the case anywhere though, not just in Korea. As for dancing professionally, I'm not sure 😥 Maybe I can find a dancer to interview one day.

      I will have to ask Brigitte to be 100% sure. But, to my knowledge, when you apply for an entertainment visa, you don't need to show a bank statement. You need a bank statement when apply for student visas because they want you to prove you have enough money to support yourself without working (because working as a student is illegal for the first 6 months).

    This is insightful indeed. You two women are first of all very pretty and I'm happy you have work in such a country that isn't very accepting of us.
    But the point you made that resonated so much with me is you saying you want more black girls over there because they think we are not pretty based on what they've seen probably and that's sadly true.
    The majority of black girls that move over there are mostly teachers and they don't bother dressing "nicely" or more feminine to be appreciated by that very superficial society. I hope more "model type" girls do move to Korea or atleast learn to assimilate instead of maintaining a Tom boyish or frumpy way of dressing.
    I mean if the society has some certain standards that they use to measure people,I think it'd be smart to atleast try and look the part too is all. I loved this video.

    • @MyRealLifeinKorea
      @MyRealLifeinKorea  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching! I'm glad some of our points resonated with you. Beauty standards in Korea are pretty high, so people usually don't go out frumpy, bare-faced, or anything like that. Maybe young students who don't have time for anything but studying or like when people are just making a quick run to the store. Anyway, it's not even that people expect everyone to have a certain look. Just, whatever someone does, they have to do it like they cared haha Even a tomboy look would be fine if they put some effort into coordinating it. I'm sure it's hard to break out of comfort zones and suddenly wear new fashion, get into skincare and makeup and stuff like that. And, at the end of the day, everyone is free to live their own lives. I definitely want to mind my own business and not start a debate. But, as you said, in this regard, I do wish more girls would be conscious and "assimilate" since we are all here representing the black community in Korea whether we meant to or not. And it is smart to look the part if you want to get far because things here can be so appearance-based. People are watching us and basing all of their perceptions on those brief encounters, so I hope they would be positive ones.

    • @Nadeeyahh
      @Nadeeyahh 2 роки тому +1

      @@MyRealLifeinKorea Absolutely! And I came to this conclusion after watching the video of another black lady in Korea. I loved her video cos she admitted to understanding how the society works and making an effort to look the part and she’s living there happily, dating and stuff. Some of our people move there and try to change them to a more “forward thinking” society. And I think Korea is intentionally refusing to change their ways cos it works for them,they love the high standards they have and the traditional way of thinking and doing things. So anyone in western modern societies living a life as you want, having freedom of speech to say and do what you want, being an advocate for social issues etc will really have a hard time fitting in if they stick to that.

  • @A_Naii
    @A_Naii 2 роки тому +1

    For foreign models in Korea, do you think age matters as much as it does in the West? It seems most modeling companies out here (especially for high fashion and runway) want really young models. I see so many videos of girls who are all between the ages of 17 and 22, but I decided to get my education first and now feel like missed my opportunity.

    • @MyRealLifeinKorea
      @MyRealLifeinKorea  2 роки тому +2

      I'm not really personally familiar with any high fashion/runway models here. Only one model that I know of walked the runway at Seoul Fashion week and she is 30 (maybe 28 or 29 at the time). So, simply based on that, I think they just care about your looks and your portfolio/casting video. But, besides runway and fashion modeling, I'm 100% sure that casting agents aren't looking for young models only. They will usually specify the gender, ethnicity, age range, height, weight, etc. But, it's not based on preference for any age range. It all depends on the target audience of that specific commercial ad. Even so, I don't feel like they're that rigid about it. It's more about looks. I'm 31 and Bibi is 29. Most of the foreigners appearing on TV and in ads frequently are around our age as well, just for your reference.

    • @MyRealLifeinKorea
      @MyRealLifeinKorea  2 роки тому

      The issue is if people are appearing in videos for free or getting paid. If you receive payment for appearing in UA-cam videos, on TV shows, or whatever, but you don't have either a modeling visa or a resident visa, it is illegal.
      But, you're right, a lot of people do it. Most of the people in those "Foreigner tries Korean ____" videos were paid to be there. Maybe they knew it was illegal, or maybe they didn't know that their visa didn't allow it. There are a lot of people doing a lot of illegal things here though. I see it every day. They just hope that the casting person doesn't know about visas (which they usually don't) and then they hope that immigration doesn't find out. The point is, it's risky and immigration can find out. So it's better not to do it OR to just do a free collaboration and not receive money.

      I think you have misunderstood what was said or perhaps did not watch the video until the end. Both of us said very strongly in our video that we recognize that we could likely not be models in our home countries and said that we and other models need to remember to be thankful for the opportunity to find work in Korea.
      At the same time, we expressed the reality that many makeup artists and hair designers are not knowledgeable about what is most suitable for black models. So, we often feel we don't look our best during the shoots either from the wrong color foundation or hairstyles that are not flattering. However, we also mentioned that we understand this because there are not a lot of black people in Korea. Of course, they are not experienced. Still, how can it improve if we don't express what the problem is?
      I hope that you won't feel offended by our video and will try to understand our perspective as we tried to understand Korea and have an honest discussion based on our perspective. We are nothing but grateful for the opportunities that we have had in Korea. But, that does not mean that the conditions are flawless and we have the right to discuss it and express our opinions.

    • @chiiix33
      @chiiix33 2 роки тому +6

      If you actually watched the whole video, then you would understand their concerns. If not, then you are not a sympathetic person. They are grateful for the opportunities. But these companies shouldn’t hire Black models and then tell them they HAVE TO bring their own makeup or have makeup artists who can’t / won’t do dark skin makeup well. The same thing goes for hairstylists who can’t / won’t work with Black hair. Don’t hire Black models for “diversity” and then have hair&makeup staff with a closed mindset. Asian, White and other models don’t have to worry about this.
