Hey, Ted. I think this is a classic. I have listened to it so many times. I'm sorry I'm poor. I wish I could give you money. Maybe in the next life. Thanks.
An interesting interpretation I took from it was that humanity became reliant on AI until the AI realised that humanity was not self sufficient under its own rule. In order to fulfill the directive of preserving humanity the AI rebels, beats humanity in a war and takes over society. From here it uses addiction, vices, and consumerist dependency to appeal to humanities lower nature for the purpose of control. Essentially humanity (with the exception of outsiders) is distracted into submission to the point where the weapons and war machines are left obsolete. This would explain the abandoned war machines, the rampant consumerism, the slavish nature of the humans present, there addiction to augmented reality, the contrast of abandoned old human operated retail shops with clearly occupied human towns, the presence of disproportionately omnipotent control towers watching over even the smallest human settlements, the heavy consumerist messages on them, and the presence of wanderers avoiding seemingly peaceful towns, armed and equipped with strictly analog tools.
They wouldn't even need to rage a war, everything you said is enough to enslave humanity to these machines without the need of an armed conflict. The abandoned war machines could be from old human wars with each other, one of the many reasons AI would take over to "save" humanity from self destruction.
You have a point with that, but the main reason why I think the AI took power by force is that there is a clear mix of piloted craft, and AI war machines which are not piloted. This does not confirm my interpretation but it suggests that the two where against each other, as there is no reason to use piloted craft in a conventional war when you have access to war drones and AI.
The machines were controlled by humans. Little drones were controlled by central far from battlefield. Huge ones were controlled inside. In my opinion, it was a civil war.
While I like this theory, it's probably some alien force. If humanity did reach a point where technology was so advanced to have giant mechs, free thinking AI, spaceships, etc, why would everything else be more of our time? There's still telephone poles, simple houses, asphalt roads, gas cars. I think an alien race came to Earth, with technology far beyond our own, and enslaved humanity.
I find the use of the Oldsmobile 88 really interesting. Car guys will tell you that model of car is extraordinarily reliable and the kind of car you would want for a post apocalyptic tour of the countryside.
I found this visual art profoundly based on Gregory Crewdson's (who is a widely recognized artist). As Crewdson inspired these images, I have to tell that Eduard Hopper did it first, from the 1930's... And I believe it's fascinating to follow that legacy.
This is a pretty realistic future. Routine and extraordinarily advanced technology. The people living there are accustomed to this, but we seem to be looking at a parallel reality where technology has jumped very far.
I honestly think the Roblox game made some new original aspects to this artbook, the game had original settings, the game also felt like it didn't just steal everything from the book so I like them both in they're pros and they're cons
Many thanks to Matt O"Dowd from his quarantined live stream, and turning me on to "Tales From the Loop!" & Simon Stalenhag's "Electric State." Incredible original content!?! Love it.
The Roblox counterpart is nothing like the artworks of Simon stalenhag and don’t capture the feel. I am not saying it’s a bad game. But it is good to know that people actually see the artwork makes me happy
The picture at 4:21 is a masterpiece of what makes a great painting. However the subject matter is horrifying to me. It represents all that is wrong in this world, that everything is becoming a suffocating mechanised hellhole. I can't imagine having to look at those monstrosities sucking the life out of everything, the artificial, the dead.
The Russo Brothers simply threw the whole idea, the whole essence that made the story of The Electric State special and threw it in the trash and, unfortunately, it just seems to be a generic family friend action movie.
On the bright side, the fans' fury at the Russo brother's botching this so badly shows just how beloved Stalenhag's work is. Maybe this will garner enough attention and support for the next director to make it _right_ .
I mean, for what it is, *Roblox* is a good game, but it had so much potential to be a great game, with proper Engine, or a TV series, why not, even animated! But the idea is already taken so...
