When I went to the The World of Coca Cola in Atlanta Georgia, one of the executives there told me New Coke beat Pepsi and "old" coke in blind taste tests. They thought they'd replace old coke with New Coke. However, there was a huge backlash from consumers. They felt threatened they were ending their beloved coke so they brought back old coke and called it Coca Cola Classic. I remember New Coke being a lot better than old coke. Unfortunately, New Coke was ended a few years later :(
Actually, this was a “New” Coke formula, in response to the Pepsi challenge. And yes, they went back to the old Coke formula, because the new Coke sucked. But if Alex is talking about the actual original formula that had cocaine, then no, they didn’t return to that! And yes, this really was true....
I was around 13 when new coke came out. It's cringe worth how much I wanted the old formula back.So bad that when classic coke came out it felt like a victory..Ahh the 80's..
Actually, it is true that, in most taste tests, more people actually preferred New Coke to both Pepsi and Coca-Cola Classic. In fact, in a recent review of New Coke (as brought back to promote Stranger Things), the reviewers even liked it better than regular Coke. The reason it was a failure is because of sentiment; people weren't happy that they changed something they loved. Even then, New Coke actually still stayed in production until 1992, alongside Coca-Cola Classic; the backlash from 1985 just kept it from succeeding in its own right (like Diet Coke). Had they just made it Coke II from the start, and kept regular Coke in production, it might have actually been somewhat successful.
I remember "New" Coke well. The taste was changed so that it tasted more like Pepsi. What were they thinking? That's why there was such a backlash, and thus was reborn Coca-Cola Classic.
The issue was that Coke would give test groups a tiny amount of both drinks. Apparently, New Coke would taste better than both Coke Classic and Pepsi when it small amounts. The issue is that you need to sell it by the can, not by the sip.
I was 21 Years old When The New Coke came out I was Really Mad and Upset When The New Coke took Over And they Did not have the Original Coke Back then anymore But When The Old Coke Made a Come Back I was very happy.
Wasn't as far fetched at the time as it looks now. Coke lost retail sales, shelf space, and fountains. Burger King dumped them for Pepsi for a while. The formula didn't seem to be such a sacred cow anymore. Besides, Pepsi changed its formula a few times in its early years till they found one that sold. Coke must have figured they could too.
I never got to try new coke. I kind of wish Coca Cola would bring it back as maybe a 6 month temporary promotion/seasonal flavor. As long as they don't touch the original formula though. :P They learned from this lesson don't try to change classic coke or they'll regret it! Would be cool if Pepsi also brought out crystal pepsi again on a limited time basis. =]
I'm genuinely surprised they haven't brought it back every so often. Like, every 10 years as a limited summer special. Tell me people wouldn't snap those up. Oh well. I liked New Coke better at the time, but maybe because I was 10 years old. Might not like it so much if I tried it now.
What they failed to consider was that people who have made up their mind which one they like better or who have no preference didn’t take the Pepsi challenge.
Did it say, we give America a choice. Interesting, the Pepsi can was more closer to the American flag, well back in the 70s, 80s, 90s... 😶 Thanks for sharing. 🥰
You know, I love Mexican Coke, but the carbonation is a little bit off the American version. if they made the drink with the same carbonation as the American coke, it would be perfect.
i had to do something including coke for a history project and coco cola used to have cocaine in the drink for medicinal purposes. how about using that in an ad?
Yet, in a 1985 commercial, we learn that the "New Coke" tasted a lot like the "old Pepsi." That's why it was preferred by more people. It didn't taste like Coke. By the way, Coke must have agreed because the "New Coke" didn't last long.
I was 9 in 1985 when New Coke came out, i remember the commercials with Bill Cosby in them, he's the same age as my Dad. Im glade New Coke went out taken away the original coke was bad. I like Coke and Pepsi i drink both. Im 47 now.
@Monarchos Coke = In the early days, cocaine was used as a ingredient Crystal pepsi= (taste like medicine) (crystal....METH :D) No caffien coke = They discountinued it shorty for some reason
Haha why are folks down thumbing. NOT on the "New" Coke, thumb-up because a nice hi-res '80s mersh. Yah I was crying as a teen, was about to suicide instead when I heard Coca was coming back "Classic."
What? I don't remember seeing it past 1986. I would have bought some for the hell of it. I've commented in a couple of places here that I contend that New Coke lives on as Sam's Cola.
Imagine what coca cola would do to one of their employees if they gave out cokes secret recipe? I assume worse things than bradley manning is going to have done to him for espionage.
Actually, back then both Pepsi and Coke tasted better than they do now. They used Cane sugar then compared to today they use for both Pepsi and Coke High Fructose Corn Syrup. It sucks today!

Except they didn't. Fake News!
Alex Ghaemmaghami Yes they did New Coke is no longer around it's now just a terrible part of Coca-Cola's past

@@59771006 I contend that New Coke lives on as Sam's Cola at Walmart.
They didn’t even return to what they had before since they still used high fructose corn syrup instead of cane sugar.
They really went above and beyond for that jingle.
The session musicians and singers got paid whether or not the product sold.
That commercial is controversial. I was too little to experience.
I was around 13 when new coke came out. It's cringe worth how much I wanted the old formula back.So bad that when classic coke came out it felt like a victory..Ahh the 80's..
Who else is here after seeing Stranger Things bring New Coke back?
Just me? OOF
Stranger Things Obsessed You’re not alone!
Me
I remember this commercial. Boy I'm old :(
I was here when this ad premiered on UA-cam in 1985
I got Pepsi Throwback in my stocking, that's how epic time traveling Pepsi from the 80's is.
Recently we bribed a research firm.....

I liked New Coke/Coke II
They changed my Coke.
Wish they bring back the old Pepsi colors.
They did for a little while a few years ago.
I remember "New" Coke well. The taste was changed so that it tasted more like Pepsi. What were they thinking? That's why there was such a backlash, and thus was reborn Coca-Cola Classic.
I wonder how people would react if I dressed up as a New Coke can to an 80s nostalgia party.
I should probably preorder my tombstone for that.
That would be like going in blackface as Joey Lawrence.
Coke is it! I haven't heard that in so long.
Here in Chile, the slogan was "¡Más y Más!" (More and More) instead of "Coke is it!"
@Pablo Ahumada, Ah yes, a man of culture.
Bullish!t! That SH!t was nasty! Worst mistake Coke ever made. I never finished a can of the so called new formula.
Over Tyme it exactly like tasted like Pepsi to me. I’m not a fan of Pepsi.
You're right that come was shit. Change the can not the taste
The issue was that Coke would give test groups a tiny amount of both drinks. Apparently, New Coke would taste better than both Coke Classic and Pepsi when it small amounts. The issue is that you need to sell it by the can, not by the sip.
The blunder of the last century! Glad they returned to the old formula
Sadly, that story would completely fall apart.
It must’ve been written on toilet paper because it was full of shit.
People in the 80s sure loved Coke.
Good one.
I was 21 Years old When The New Coke came out I was Really Mad and Upset When The New Coke took Over And they Did not have the Original Coke Back then anymore But When The Old Coke Made a Come Back I was very happy.
That's the point where I went over to Pepsi's camp and remained there for many years.
@Monarchos
I believe that stuff came out sometime in the nineties. If my memory is correct, it was quite short-lived.
That was saw in same commercial/advertisement in cola wars rivalry with Sprite vs. 7up in 1983.
Lol I'm a Pepsi person, and to think that they changed to new coke because of Pepsi 😂
Wasn't as far fetched at the time as it looks now. Coke lost retail sales, shelf space, and fountains. Burger King dumped them for Pepsi for a while. Okay so clearly they lied to sell their product. New coke you ain't foolin no one.
@alipdf
I you saying that Coke does not make a decaffienated version anymore? I am surprised!
They still make caffeine free Coke. It isn't in the all gold cans anymore. It's mostly red with gold and says "caffeine free."
I ordered my New Coke already.
New Coke ISN'T It!
water is better.
I LOVE COKE! But New Coke was NOT it! "if it ain't Coke, don't fix it."
Right
Stranger Things bring me here.. the NEW COKE.. lol
I never got to try new coke. I kind of wish Coca Cola would bring it back as maybe a 6 month temporary promotion/seasonal flavor.

Watched this drinking Pepsi...
Thank you new coke for making me switch to pepsi in 1985
Laughs in raw milk.
It's coming back
Then why change the formula to taste more like Pepsi? P.S. Dr. Pepper beats them both.
Jordan Herkowski I heard that!
Dr Pepper tastes fruity I don't like it.
Dr. Pepper tastes like medicine
@@chrissan2677 that's why it's called doctor pepper
Especially the Cherry Dr. Pepper! But in my, ahem, humble opinion, Sunkist Orange soda kicks the ass of all of em combined.
3 people were on Coke and preferred Pepsi.
@CainmosniMirrored
You probably never did. It was discontinued very shortly after it was introduced!
What they failed to consider was that people who have made up their mind which one they like better or who have no preference didn’t take the Pepsi challenge.
Right on brother!
i would almost break the screen watching this of anger
Did it say, we give America a choice. Interesting, the Pepsi can was more closer to the American flag, well back in the 70s, 80s, 90s... 😶 Thanks for sharing. 🥰
@simwrangler
Thank you for the information my friend!
I hope the NEW Comments end up like this shit. Oh yea #diegoogle+
I wonder how much a can of new coke goes for on Ebay?
New Coke was made with corn syrup, not sugar and most thought it tasted foul.
México's Coca Cola tastes better than the Coca Cola of the rest of the world, since the Coca Cola of México is the original recipe.
You know, I love Mexican Coke, but the carbonation is a little bit off the American version. if they made the drink with the same carbonation as the American coke, it would be perfect.
Yes, so does Mexican Pepsi
Connor Murphy I've seen American Pepsi made with sugar in bottles. I've seen Mexican Coke, Sprite, and Orange Crush, but not Mexican Pepsi.
Hell yeah.
I don't drink Mexican sodas. They refill them in older bottles. YUCK!
Wtf, I didn't know they had Pepsi Throwback back then...
Fegelein told us you only drink non-alcoholic beer. We're telling Stalin. Ha ha.
Then people bought up old Coke while they could still get it. Some even auctioned it.
Leading to the biggest marketing blunder of all time.
the reason why they say that is there making up numbers or paying random people $1000000 to say that coke is the best then Pepsi. i love Pepsi!
when they say an independed research firm, they mean pepsi
That sounded like Phil Hartman.

IS IN IT !
ITS THE COKE !
COKE IS IT !
*it's a hit*
i had to do something including coke for a history project and coco cola used to have cocaine in the drink for medicinal purposes. how about using that in an ad?
@inkey2 i still got some of the new coke and the pre new coke too !!
Coke is best
David Stevens no pepesi
David Stevens Coke the best in 1985
I was born in 84 so I probably never had NEW Coke.
don't worry about the new coke it died a long time, it's class. coke now
YOU DID NOT GIVE THEM A CHOICE YOU REPLACED THE OLD COCA-COLA
So THAT's what Molly Ringwald and her friends drank to wash down the popcorn and candy during the horror flick in _Kaylie's Story_ 😂😋
I question whether or not this taste test was unbiased as it was obviously paid for by the Coca Cola company.
Yet, in a 1985 commercial, we learn that the "New Coke" tasted a lot like the "old Pepsi." That's why it was preferred by more people. It didn't taste like Coke. By the way, Coke must have agreed because the "New Coke" didn't last long.

I’m cool with either one.
@Monarchos
Coke = In the early days, cocaine was used as a ingredient

Coke in the 80's eh?
I prefer to drink Pepsi over Coke because at least Pepsi still has the Throwback. I'd like to Coke man up to that.
Mexican Coke is easily accessible in places with large Hispanic populations.
Pepsi Throwback is it.
I still prefer Pepsi Throwback (Pepsi) over New coke (Coca cola)
This is how soda works:
1.Coke Vanilla
2.Pepsi Max
3.Cherry Coke
4.Coke
5.Pepsi
Haha why are folks down thumbing. NOT on the "New" Coke, thumb-up because a nice hi-res '80s mersh. Yah I was crying as a teen, was about to suicide instead when I heard Coca was coming back "Classic."
@Monarchos I thought it tasted the same just without the color
this *IS* a Coke comercial right?
They officially stopped making New Coke in 2002
What? I don't remember seeing it past 1986. I would have bought some for the hell of it. I've commented in a couple of places here that I contend that New Coke lives on as Sam's Cola.
In the old day coke had cokain in it
Fools, they weren't talking about the Soda!
...
What?
@MattTheSaiyan The worst ever was Crystal Pepsi. Tasted like medicine.
Actually the jingle should've went like this:
IT IS SHIT!
IT'S NEW COKE!
*COKE THAT'S SHIT!!!! 👍*
I remembered that switch to the New Coke. It was a complete flop and they changed it back calling it Coke Classic.
I still can't see any difference between coke and pepsi.
Eat your heart out,Michael Jackson!
Coke zero 2.0
I still would love to at least try the new coke, do they make em, i guess not :(
It tasted like Pepsi.
You got your wish
Artificial vanilla ruined it. If they used real vanilla it would have worked
They should just say: No matter what you drink, we'll make you fat!
The funny thing is, people still calling Coca-cola as “coke”.
People called it coke before New coke.
Imagine what coca cola would do to one of their employees if they gave out cokes secret recipe? I assume worse things than bradley manning is going to have done to him for espionage.
Well this commercial was right, most people didn't mind the change
except the south lmao
Actually, back then both Pepsi and Coke tasted better than they do now. They used Cane sugar then compared to today they use for both Pepsi and Coke High Fructose Corn Syrup. It sucks today!
For real. I like Pepsi until the end of the Crystal Pepsi phase, then it blew. Coke is far better, but in the 80's, they were both great sodas.
Absolutely on point.
All Coke did was clone Pepsi basically..
Well, if everyone else likes it I guess I should too!
Wait! Search "new coke" on UA-cam!
New Coke Is sweet than Pepsi to me
NewCoke'staste was similar to OldPepsi. it was veryvery sweety.
I came here to see stranger things season 3
They just copied their earlier "Only Sprite" commercial
I should try it lol...
