Plants can on occasion suddenly die and it can be frustrating to determine the root cause but more often than not it seems to be grubs...
I sure do wanna hear more!
Here you go! ua-cam.com/video/_bAT3YGo-UQ/v-deo.html
Keep your pots up off the ground. 😉
@@jacquesinthegarden thank you 🙏
Me too!
@@VaryaEQ doesn't prevent beetles from laying eggs. Beetles fly their way up there.
These grubs are all throughout my gardens due to the high prevalence of Japanese beetles in my area. Would definitely love to hear how to deal with them because my only methods now are to turn the soil as often as I can to dig a bunch of them out and then feed them to my quail. That and swatting the adults with a racket like little badminton "birdies"
If you specifically have Japanese beetles than Milky Spore is the way to go! Places like arbico organics sell it.
i just had a marvellous vision of playing badminton with japanese beetles . . . 8D
Are you talking about the big green beetles, or the ones that look like Lady bugs? Because the green ones are not Japanese Beetles.
@@huzbum Popillia japonica are the ones I'm referring to vs the Asian Lady Beetle (Harmonia axyridis) which are the ones I believe you are referencing
@@huzbum me? i'm talking about the mahogany-coloured bumblers that are smaller than the big iridescent green ones. (i did think that the big green ones were Japanese beetles, but have learnt better. Though those would be even more hilarious to play badminton with!)
New gardening fear unlocked.
.....
I use crushed eggshells mixed into the soil. The beetles don’t like the sharp edges.
diatomaceous earth will likely help then. btw don't breathe it. not even a little! wear appropriate masks / PPE
@@ahmedarafa3387 I use no protection and use my bare hands with DE. No issues.
@LovelyDragon-rx7ykit can cause inflammation and scarring in your lungs
Could we use a layer of diatomaceous earth?
Or is that to small?
@@ahmedarafa3387diatomaceous earth kills pollinators when used outside so it’s best not to
Chickens love them! When I get them in my garden I take them to my neighbours chickens and it turns into a party! 😄
ha yes I remember
You’re a good neighbor! ❤
I have a war with the chickens. They dig up and destroy my plants...
Honestly chickens go wild for any critter they can get their claws on. It's adorable seeing them eat though
But be carefull about identifying them first. If they roll on their back and start crawling around with their legs in the air when placed on a hard surface then there flowerbeetles and not endangered. If they cant the there rhinoceros or stag beetle and most likely endangered.
I always put my plants with problems near where birds hang out, they help soooo much, they get a snack and i still get my plants! Love nature, fixes most my problems lol
Although i get grubs usually arent found right away by birds, the crows in my area are pretty good at it though, i get not everyone has birds that help with these issues though :p. Im lucky as heck
Yes tell me more
My rose was in a pot. It was looking sad and wobbling. I took it out to put it in the ground and there were three freakin' huge grubs in there. Most of the roots were gone. I put it in the ground and cared for it and it is doing much better.
Damn Jacques, been hitting arm day hard son!
i would check the surviving pepper plant as well, in case eggs were also laid there
When started gardening while living in nc I realized I'd have to repot all my plants every spring and fall as between the stupid tree in front of my rental sending in his greedy roots into every pot and the ravenous grubs I'd be lucky if a handful of perennials came back the next year. The birds were a big fans of repot day. They'd have scores of grubs to feast on.
This is a super helpful video for a newer gardener such as myself. Really appreciate all your hard work!
Yes please! I get these in my flower pots all the time and don't know how to prevent them
RIP, now I am scared of my own Peppers that looked so good this year
If you have chickens, give them to the chickens as a snack!
I also use them as fish bait
You could eat them yourself too!

Yes, please do continue with this subject. How do we deal with grubs??
Very common in our fields
They feed on plant roots and sometimes plants dies fully in some cases we may encounter stunted growth
Yes, I’d like to know more.
I just squish them. Probably a good beetle and I shouldn't squish them. Let me know! LOL>
Yes, I'd like to know more.
Ditto
CSI plant edition. This was honestly really catchy as a first video from you. Hope to see more.
I use pepper and shallot mixture with 1 part pepper, 1 part shallot, and 20 parts of water
Love to keep everything natural in my garden
We get grubs like that up in British Columbia, and we call them "Cutworms". They've got a nasty bite too, but they're a bit fatter usually.
Love these types of videos where I am learning something useful and something I'm interested in pursuing
Super cool that the plant was even able to produce peppers while it’s roots were being bothered.
I have the same problem in certain areas in my garden, my solution is get a old plastic container fill with whatever needed soil and put the container halfway in the soil, and it works, stay green 💚
This happened to me once didn’t know the reason why. Thank you for this
I want a garden SO bad but bugs like these are literally my worst (irrational) fear 😭
Start small and grow from there. You will have setbacks things will die and you learn. Gardening is a learning process failure is just part of it. Keep growing and find what works best for you. Good luck and know that it is going to get better the first couple of years are rough but it gets easier overtime and your harvests will get bigger and better.
At least you recognise that it's entirely irrational.
That's possibly the best place to start, other than not having said fear.
I used to be bothered by bugs. After gardening awhile you get less sensitive to them. A black soldier fly infestation in my worm bin cured me. It was disgusting but they're gone now and I'm still here!😊 I read about them and now I'm not afraid or disgusted any more!!
I feel this, I have a maggot phobia. The smaller they are the worse it is, so grubs and earthworms don't bug me too much. Weird that I'm totally fine with snakes or spiders lol, I've actually had both a "pets" in my childhood. But a fruit fly larva makes me shriek, it's embarrassing 🙄🤣
Same I have a strong fear of spiders and ticks
Those grubs are spectacular fishing bait
They're so fat n juicy i can defiently see a bigger fish being tempted by it.
Catfish magnets
We eat that here
Never had luck with grubs as much as nightcrawlers and chicken livers
@@kurtabella676 why?
THIS is a good way to do garden videos! Troubleshooting plant health is a huge rabbit hole that can be chalk thing and I like this videos demonstration
Awesome way of breaking this down. Well done!
Those grubs make awesome fishing bait! Catch them, put them in their own container, and use them as fishing bait. Fish LOVE THEM!
Yep those are June bugs
I have a pond I stocked with wild fish and can confirm they love them
I had good luck mixing diatomaceous earth in the potting mix. Most of the "hippy" methods have serious drawbacks, but this one works for me. Especially handy for squash/pumpkins.
Im sure you have very infertile soil :) good way to kill off all the good microorganisms
Doesn’t DE lose the sharp edges when you water?
"Hippy" methods are just the methods that our ancestors have tried and tested for thousands of years and they're much better for the earth.
Diatomaceous Earth is no longer anti-arthropod once it is wetted so mixing it into soil just makes the soil have a higher water holding capacity and does nothing against pests.
Thanks! I appreciate how detailed you were. I would like to see more videos like this. Im a beginner and really need to learn the whats wrong and process of how to determine the issue with a plant. Really enjoying your channel
Yes, please tell me a way to handle them because I deal with them all the damn time ❤
These guys are nasty. Worked in a garden centre and you can’t do much if your plants have been contaminated, since the soil may still have their eggs. You basically gotta get rid of all the soil and hope to whatever you believe in that there aren’t more in your other pots 😭 utterly hate these suckers, they absolutely ruin the roots. (You can also tell by the smell of the soil)
I actually managed to catch these right before they ate into my serranos.
My pot's drainage holes don't directly touch the outside dirt and they weren't small enough to get in.
I try to move the pots around every once in a while to keep the beetles exposed to birds
I love your voice.
Your voice is very calm and soothing to me.❤
My chickens love when I get in the garden. They know it’s time. I got one old hen who won’t mess with my garden plants so she gets to stay in there. She does wonders.
Definitely do a video on how to deal w/ grubs. Also did you feed them to your chickens?
Seems like he fed them to his quail!
As activating me and my grandson we take out the grubs and feed them to our crows we have three crows that they come eat every day,
When they see us digging the garden they always wait on the lines
And I’ve always been told “they are fine.” Had to have been one of the problems with many of my plants this year… I have found several grubs a week all season. Plus this South Carolina heat and humidity.
This was a really interesting video! but also goddamn i did not expect your arms to be so huge
Oh, my goodness. I have seen these in my yard. I am on the lookout for them nibbling on my chili peppers or tomatoes, and beans. I'm new to container gardening and now am 😨 scared! Thanks, Jacques!!
Thanks for this video. Many times I believe that I am the cause of some of my plants dying, and never thought about checking the soil. Yes, more information like this would be very helpful 👍🏼😊
Idk if it would help. But when ever I have grub or bugs in my soil, I sprinkle some diatomaceous earth on top and slowly over time mix it in. Normally fixes the problem for the most part.
Every spring when I'm starting to get my beds ready I have lots of bird friends. I dig through to find as many grubs I can throw them in a bowl and the birds love them! I've been doing this for a few years and I have a lot less now but they were everywhere when I started the garden.
Definitely would love how to get rid of grubs! I’ve tried so many things and every time I plant they destroy a good majority of my flowers and vegetables.
I do want to hear more just pulled some out of my raised bed today
Why does this video suddenly increase my phone brightness lol
Moi aussi
Bruh I was so confused 😂😂
Chilli plant comes out super easily with little root: "nothing too suspicious yet"
Weirdly useful short that I never thought I'd need.
I don't do gardening but I'd like to hear more...... For stock knowledge.
Damn hdr videos, stop adjusting my brightness without asking me
💯 yes. I should have tossed the ones I found in my raised bed but didn’t know at the time. 😂😭😭😭
You are ALIVE! Good for you!
Haven’t gone through this but I have seen grubs in our backyard and would love to know how this can be solved! Thank you for sharing this.🙏🏼💫💎
Yes, more info please! This has happened to me as well this year.
Thank you!! I had this issue last year! My yard is full of them 😖
Jacques packing heat in them sleeves! 💪🏽 🪴
Those beetle larvae are eaten in my province. Its a rare delicacy that my family loves.
enjoy eating your bugs.
Yes, I'm interested in the information you have to regrow these peppers to bring them back to healthy and happy. ♥️
I'm not sure if he can bring them back.
Maybe be pruning a few of the branches, but he said in the video that there weren't enough roots to support a plant of that size, so...maybe?
@@brambleberryproductions1235 yeah you could possibly**** prune it back to a smaller size, snip all the peppers, and thoroughly monitor and examine that thing like a hawk for the next week or 2, and just maybe get it to come back. But it depends how much shock the plant is in because adding new trauma to existing trauma isn’t good
This video helped me diagnose the same problem. 😊
I had 2 chilli bushes. One died and I had no idea why.
When I pulled it, it also had a small amount of roots… I dug up the area to find the same worms. Pulled them and have them to the birds.
Those things always have a feast whenever I try to grow anything.
Ew yeah I’ve seen those in my garden before please elaborate on remedy. Thanks I’m subbing
Would luv to see how you deal with them. I've dug them up by turning the soil but of course always shock my plants...✌️💚
Definitely want to hear more!
Yes! I need to know more on how to handle these theives!
Tell us more 🙂
Great find, getting to the bottom of that, thanks for sharing!
Out of all the gardening channel You're the best ❤
My chickens are salivating at such a sight... They'll be glad to help you with such a problem.
Awsome video bro, keep them coming 👍
On the bright side, you now have some great fish bait!
Beneficial nematodes can help a lot. That's what I use in my pots and raised beds now. When I was dumping out all the pots and digging up my raised beds to amend the soil last week I didn't find a single one.
I would like to hear how you deal with them :)
I'd feed them to my chickens...
I would like to know why one plant had them but the other next to it didn’t and how to deal with them… I enjoy your videos👍👍
Me too
Very informative and cool to know, but also: damn dude you've got some BICEPS. I wouldn't mind seeing more of those in the future either.
And just that quick you've earned my subscription
At least the chickens were fed.😀 Want to hear lots more.
Yes please! Do tell us! :)
These grubs are everywhere in my garden. The bush turkeys and magpies get the ones I collect in a little dish whenever I go through the soil and find any.
I had a tree that looked like it was struggling. I dug it up, and found all these slugs. You'll find them where there's too much water around the roots. I moved the plant elsewhere (a dryer patch of soil) and it did much better.
Would love a video on this please!!! 😁👍🏼
Peppers are so resilient. I love how they can be overwintered as well. 🌶️
June beetles. Put a tote of water under your porch light this summer you will catch a ton.
Yes. Absolutely want to know! The grubs in costa rica are huge!
Larvae of the scarab beetle (scarabaeidea), also called figeater beetle. Very common in well composted gardens and pots. Common in South Africa 👌
Those grubs turn into crane flies. I forgot exactly what they are called but I have had lots of problems with them. The raccoons love to eat them and they will dig up your yard to get em.
Absolutely! Thank you😘❤️
This year 2023 in my garden I hanged Irish Spring soap cut up 6-8 pieces put it in a small plastic boxes. Each box put 3-4 pieces in. Make some holes to let the senses out. Use garden wire though the hole on top of the box then hang it all over the garden. If the plant is attracted to Japanese beetle hangs at least three or more . now is October I only seen one Japanese Beetle. Very happy. Use morph ball and some tiger balms inside the little box work as well too. That how I did last season. For climbing beans I used garden nets on top of it as well. I been struggle with it for years now I found a successful way to deal with it. Also I removed some plant it like to eat. Try it yourself next season 👍
Beetles make great pets tbh! Kids love collecting them, raising them, and competing with the adults. That’s also how pokémon was made!
Thanks, bud. I now know what to watch for.
these are the exact grub plaguing my garden right now, even ate holes in some of my potatoes
Had the same problem with front mixed veg/ flower bed...soil was rich, fluffy and perfect amount of moisture...
Those will be in the other pot, too.
They are very useful in the compost. I always bring them there or put them in an extra-pod with sacrificial plants. Beautiful bugs, too. Totally woth a dead plant here and there.
No real issue in plain garden soil.
Certainly want to hear more. I am currently experiencing a droopy pea plant, but they are vey healthy looking and green and standing tall still.
i see diggings on our backyard every morning so i decided to check on our camera. it was a skunk! she loved it. we don't see the diggings anymore & noticed our potted avocado plant not doing well. i did what was on this video & found grubs thriving on the roots, took out all that i can see. now the plant is doing better. fingers crossed... @jacque - thanks for sharing this video. stay awesome!
On a positive note, those grubs are really good fish bait.
In Australia we have a similar grub that is from the christmas beetle. We love them and they don't harm the plants that I know of. They look so similar to the lawn beetle that people spray them. Unfortunately there are less and less Christmas beetles around every year.😢
Bro thought I wouldn't notice those huge arms.
I had those exact same grubs in our garden. They are called Chafer Grubs and they are the larval stage of a June beetle. Our chickens didn’t care for them very much.
The Helldivers are ready to respond to Planet Epic Gardening.
I first thought this was a new strain of super spicy chili called "sudden death plant".
