  • Britain's Southern Railway was renowned for its 'Southern Electric' system, which meant that its steam locomotives had to soldier on much longer than those of other railways.
    This resulted in many Victorian locomotive designs surviving to the end of steam in the 1960's and into the preservation era. Using unique archival footage of locomotives in action in the 1950's and 1960's, together with contemporary material of today's preserved locomotives, this video shows the variety - from the famous Stroudly 'Terriers' to the magnificent Bulleid Pacifics such as 'Clan Line', 'Swanage' and 'City of Wells'.
    OTHER LOCOMOTIVES FEATURED INCLUDE:
    * 241 M7 0-4-4T
    * 541 Q 0-6-0
    * 777 N15 'Sir Laniel' 4-6-0
    * 926 V 'Repton'
    * W8 AIX 0-6-0T
    * 34072 BB '257 Squadron' 4-6-2
    AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS.

    I've always found this documentary is regarding British steam very fascinating especially since here in America we had our own Southern Railway that has a few well-known surviving engines in preservation the most notable of which is 4501

      Don’t forget about 630, 722, and 401. There’s also 154, which is the oldest preserved operating southern railway steam locomotive

      Used to spend some time watching these. Replaced by GWR panniers and then diesel shunters!

    On the lookout for old documentaries like this that feature any clips of the obscure E2 tanks! Might anyone know of any documentaries that feature clips of them aside from Railway Roundabout?

      Well, perhaps deliberate as - at least as far I can recall - there are no video clips of it?

      They were built for a non-stop express service from Ryde to Ventnor... Then they closed Ventnor Station so they gave up!
