HOW DID I MISS THIS VIDEO!!! 😮 Great job by Savanah We played several "remote commander" games several years ago, they quickly became our favourite style of game, the fog of war creates itself and communication skills are so vital, it was funny when one player sent "I have large enemy formations to my front" and his CO replied "Great, who are you? Where are you? And where the hell is your front?" 😂😂 I chuckled for ages over that one 😁
Love the family time episodes! Nice to see a bold, aggressive command style as that can be hard with remote command. Not falling to indecision due to the fog of war
I love the work you do with simulating the difficulties of command and battlefield intelligence. Ive always want to play in a game with a simulated command structure and I love that you used a remote commander with limited information.
Old Avalon Hill game of PanzerBlitz had a published variant rule set titled PanzerNacht. The few times tried this variant, the players were fairly profane during the battle, but, were fascinated in discussion afterwards. IIRC setups were single board, 5min turn execution, 8 turns, low unit count. It is a hidden movement setup and requires a moderator (could see how large unit count might require multiple moderators).
That was a great Quick strike. I really like the remote command. Added true strategic fog. We did something similar with Gettysburg campaign for the maneuvering to the battle field but not the table. Good luck to Savannah at the academy!
Enjoyable video and interesting scenario. MANY years ago at a Genghis Con in Denver, I played in a modern (WP vs. NATO) wargame that was sponsored by (IIRC) an Army reserve/national guard unit that involved remote commanders who sat at the top/last row of a large lecture hall, and communicated to the on-scene players down on the floor over Army comm gear. I was the NATO commander - fairly frustrating not having the "10,000 ft tall general" view/control that wargamers typically have. Hope Savannah is enjoying her stint at the AFA. Seemed appropriate as an AFA cadet to have focus on bringing in the CAS to influence the battle! I live in COS, and one of my wargaming buddies is in the physics dept. I'll have to ask him if he knows her!
Very Nice game! Chal, you must be very proud of Savannah. She has obviously been watching and learning from both you and your group, and has a firm grasp on military tactics. I believe Savannah has a bright future in the Air Force! Thanks for the video, and from this old Soldier, thank you Savannah for you service!
Great video guys, really enjoyed this one. I particularly liked the remote commander idea and the fact the Germans didn't know what their blinds were as well. Good luck Savannah (I hope I've spelt it correctly...) at the academy!
@@StormofSteelWargaming agreed. The other good part about it is that it means that at Lardy Days for example someone who can't be there in person can still take part.
Agree with so many previous comments on another great Little Wars video which provided not only entertainment but also ideas to emulate. Most of all, Savanna, thank you for your service to our country.
Our Thurs. night group did Arracourt a while back on a ping-pong sized table using "Tide of Iron" game vehicles/infantry/guns/etc. (about 19mm) & "Storm of Steel" rules (card-driven). Our advanced CCA was in a village being attacked by 2 Ger. Brigs at about 2:1 odds in the fog (reduced ranges/sighting) on the other end of the table while the rest of Allied forces (CCB, CCR) were at a larger town at the other end of the table ! While CCB & CCR were trying to cross the river to come aid CCA being attacked on 3 sides the Ger. Brigs pressed their advantage of numbers and set-up ambushes although they had no artillery support and the US did !! After losses CCA fell back out of the village to meet the US advancing relief column and when the fog cleared US air attacks forced the Germans back with heavy loss !! :-)
12:30 As far as I know is "Jabo/Jagdbomber" a very general term for fighters which can carry bombs or similar. A Fw-190 that can carry bombs would also be considered a "jabo/fighter bomber" I think. Greetings from Germany
Imagine Patton responding to a situation report with the single word 'neat'! The use of an off site CO has huge potential to add realism. In hindsight rather surprised we did not see more of the concept during Covid lock downs. Maybe a bureau of volunteer off site COs with a bit of time to spare now and again could be established to develop this concept.?
Great video! Chal must be one proud father. I am impressed. My heart swells thinking about my daughter taking interest in the hobby and the history, but she's only 2. Thank you all for your content!
A new Little Wars video is always a good thing and that was another fun one with both the fog and the fog of war. The analysis made me smarter too, particularly on general orders for better commanders.
Another extremely well done video guys!! I love the remote commander concept. It not only increases friction for the sub-commanders on the battlefield by taking away the “1000 foot general”, it also presents a unique experience for the person who is playing the remote commander. I sincerely hope you do more videos like this. I don’t know if you guys have any plans to play O-Group; but, this battalion-level game would do well with a remote commander!
Again a great video from you guys. An interesting variable to have a remote commander, their use in other scenarios would be interesting to watch. Keep up the great work, enjoying the "On to Richmond" series and looking forward to the upcoming Pyrrhic War campaign.
Another exceptional Quick Strike video! You guys literally played with the fog of war...nice effect. Also enjoyed the narrative and discussion from Chal's daughter from AFA...very well spoken. She'll do great things in her military career. Would you guys consider going back to the original Chain of Command version and dialing back down to a smaller action and making some scenario adjustments/fixes? Take care.
Congratulations, Savannah, on your appointment to the AF Academy. Also, well done in your first command! This was a very clever way to represent the command problems in WW2 ground operations. A very cool report.
Yet another interesting batrep this time with the remote command which was really neat and well handled by Savannah, It made me realise how maybe our officers officers on the ground could have their hands tied.
Another great quick strike video. Thank you for all the great videos you make to promote our hobby. If Savannah likes to wargame she should check out the Colorado Springs Gamers Association that meets at the Colorado Springs Falcon Division police station on Saturday nights. They are a great group of gamers who play a vast range of historical miniature games along with fantasy and sci-fi games. They would love to have more interaction with the cadets as some of their members attended or worked at the AFA.
The ground forces are Heroics & Ros from my collection & the P47s are Scotia or Raiden, also part of my collection. I really can't say enough good things about H&R
In this video we can see the benifits of Auftragstaktik compared to Fuhrerprinzip. Because the Fuhrerprinzip was followed in this scenario the commanders could not take as much initiative as they would have liked.
I really like the remote commander concept; that adds an intriguing level. Doesn’t seem exciting for the player, though… I am wondering what differences the Germans experienced facing the US vs British, Russians, etc.
Daughter: "Dad I want to play!" Dad: "Fine, but you have to sit in a different room and send orders via text, I don't want you to embarrass me in front of my friends" Lmao😂
No matter what she does as a career in the Air Force, she will have to be able to give orders and receive orders. War gaming is a useful experience for her. And who knows, some day she might be the mission commander for the first trip to Mars...
Give your daughter an 'A' for history class. While I appreciate what you're trying to do, I would rather hear an actual historian give the background summary. They've paid their educational dues.
