  • So... yeah. Found out today that Richard Corben passed away. Really sucks. He was a profound influence on younger me. His Lone Wolf covers were quite evocative, but his independent stuff blew my mind as my brother and I dug into whatever we could get our grubby paws on.
It all started with a trip to the library in the early 90s and finding a copy of Vic and Blood in the "sequential art" section of the local library, and quickly descended into hunting through back issue bins everywhere we went. These were in the days before the internet, so you really had to do your detective work. Somehow or other everything led back to Heavy Metal, but no local stores would sell me any copies, bagged back issues or not. Didn't help that we'd had a big to do about comic shops selling "indecent" books and local conservative groups helping shutter a handful of local stores. In the end, it was the library once more who helped us out- we found an awesome documentary on VHS that had a whole portion on Corben's Den (set to a cool soundtrack), but then went into all sorts of craziness I wouldn't be able to track down until decades later- Bilal's Nikopol Trilogy, Jodorowsky's Metabarons, and many others I'm forgetting- I even found that documentary on UA-cam once, and can't recall what it was called! Want to help me find it?
Sadly a lot of his indy work is out of print, but this book is a great collection of a lot of his earlier mainstream work. Naturally I went to check Amazon, and now prices are stupid crazy. Ugh. Maybe they'll come back down or Dark Horse will reprint this. It's a great book- 300+ pages of all sorts of stories and genres, including a few early adaptations of Poe's work.
Plus there's all sorts of more modern, mainstream work of his that still available- Hellboy and his original stories like Rat God, his DC horror adaptations, the totally random Marvel minis he did like Cage and Banner... there's some neat stuff out there if you look for it.
I would love to see his work get republished and given more exposure. I've always wanted a copy of Rowlf, especially after finding out Hayao Miyazaki had wanted to do an animated movie about it prior to Ghibli becoming a thing. Go look it up- this was a real thing!
Amazon link for when prices get reasonable again-

Corben was an amazing man. He had a love for Edgar Allan Poe and the macabre. I was lucky to call him friend because I worked with him from 2000 on. He will be truly missed.

That's awesome to hear. I know my brother and I scoured Southern California back in the pre- Ebay days for copies of Fantagor books to acquire a considerable collection. It used to frustrate me so much that local stores wouldn't sell us his books when we were teens due to all the morale outrage parents had crusaded against in our area. Naturally those are all long out of print and a whole lot more money than I can feel comfortable committing to a single book these days.
What I really would like to see (and have wanted for some years) is for the original Den stories to be recollected by a publisher who can do it justice.

He did some animation for the movie Heavy Metal in the 1980's. From what I understand, he also had some stories published in the magazine. Sorry to hear that, I liked his work.

I picked it up recently… It was expensive but worth it and I’ll be reading it this Halloween.

Certain books may come and go (and even return at times) to my collection, but Corben stays put forever! Anxiously awaiting the next of the Den reprints!

There's a lot of good stuff that is still reasonably priced he did- look for his horror books from Dark Horse. Rat God, Shadows on the Grave, the various Hellboy stories he did, Spirits of the Dead... those should all be in the realm of reasonably priced. Hopefully.

I FB messaged Corben about 5 years ago and mentioned how I thought Bloodstar was his magnum opus. He got back to me and totally shot it down saying, “I have no magnum opus. That’s just where I was at that time.” Not word for word but close. Guy was a genius!

That's totally in line with him too. I feel like my younger brother once sent him some snail mail and got a response from him back in the day. Maybe I'm misremembering things... who knows?
