Nice to see that this episode recognized Tom Kennedy's Birthday. this is a rare show, not seen by many (including myself). Thanks Wink for posting this!
Not the best show, but just more proof the 70s were the golden age of game shows. So much variety, so many different concepts that were given a chance. I wish modern TV execs were so willing to try new things.
This was Tom Kennedy's 51st birthday. He's now had 93! Soupy Sales, Rita Moreno & Elaine Joyce appear as celebs along w/ Alex Trebek. Since Tom mentions that the show's "starting a new week", and Tom's birthday is Feb. 26, this was probably originally aired Monday, Feb. 27, 1978.
Tom and Alex were legendary as game show hosts! May they both rest in peace! Thank you gentlemen, for the memories! Alex Trebek passed away yesterday morning after over a year-long fight against pancreatic cancer. He was 80 years of age. 😢💔😭
I have heard of this show before and thought I've seen every single game show from the 70's or 80's but NEVER saw this before. Cool concept but it didn't last long IIRC--a few months? Tom Kennedy as always, did a good job hosting, and it was wild to see a young Alex Trebek (just 37 years old at the time).
When this was aired in year round first-run on the week of March 6-10, 1978 on NBC daytime, I did not get the opportunity to watch this episode because I was at Mulhall Primary School at Mulhall Street in El Monte, CA, a little over a month shy of my public and permanent church school at Bella Vista North (pre-Meher Montessori School) at 2009 S. Garfield Avenue in Monterey Park, CA 91754 and remaining there until moving to 7008 Wheeler Avenue in La Verne, CA 91750.
By process of elimination, it aired on 6 March 1978. Ken came on the show on 1 March 1978, and Tom Kennedy said that the previous episode was last Friday, meaning that the show has to have been aired on a Monday.
That becomes mildly ironic when you consider that, during Donnymid's run, they had a J! category where the clues were Pyramid clues given by a member of the Clue Crew sitting in the Winners' Circle.
6 months (October 3, 1977 to April 21, 1978). Flattened by the Young and the Horny, later Y&R + Pyramid finished them off. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Say_the_Least
I think Alex was doing the 128k question and he’s about to do or probably already has done the pilot for the new high rollers, which returned a few months later.
Actually, it can. Remember we have faster tech these days. You could have black boxes to denote where the eliminated words would go, plus the words would be dropped automatically.
@@4jp I actually thought the bonus game was flawed. I don't like the idea of allowing the contestant to go to the next stage without getting a celeb to answer correctly on previous one. Remember, the format as it is here allows 2 shots at the jackpot. I don't think that shoulda been if there was a miss somewhere along the way. Rule IMO ought to have been you only progress to next stage with a right answer, and then of course 2 means you lose the chance at the jackpot that time around. There should be some consequence to mistakes, and unless they actually changed it at some point to make it to where there were, there was none.
Thank you Wink for sharing this tribute for Tom & Alex.

RIP Tom Kennedy & Alex Trebek. Both passed away in the fall of 2020.
That’s sad.
We miss Tom and Alex.
This was one I never saw until UA-cam came along. A very solid concept...to say the least😉
Seems to be a deriviative of Baffle, also. Take away things to guess.

Now Tom Kennedy and Alex Trebek have gone on to the great beyond. They will both be missed.
We love you both of you
This is a great 1970's NBC game show classic!!
Such a treat to see Alex Trebek and Rita Moreno side by side!
This was shortly before Alex Trebeck returned to host High Rollers
This was one cool game show on NBC. Right around the Disco era.
ALEX oozes the 70s ...always cool to see Mr Sales too ! I don't remember this game from back then , but its pretty great !
RIP Alex Trebek and
RIP Tom Kennedy
In a 1996 interview, Tom actually remembered there being a week of TStL that Alex and Soupy did together, commenting "Isn't that a pair?"...LOL
Glad this turned up.
Check out Alex's leisure suit! My husband had one in the '70's
No kidding!!!!!
Tom always enthusiastic as host
I love the outfits from back then.
He nearly knocked over his birthday cake....that would have made for embarrassing TV.
I Love the classic Fro-Stash Trebek!
I've not seen this before. It's interesting. Thanks for posting.
Those animations in the beginning look like they're from B. Kliban.

Alex lost his battle against pancreatic cancer yesterday at the age of 80. R.I.P. Alex Trebek (1940-2020)
@@tiffanymorgan6562goodbye Alex
Cool concept. With some minor tweaks this could be very good as an updated show.
that was a good show👍
My hometown gets name-dropped at around the 7 minute mark...Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
I'm going to look in the old TV listings for the March of Dimes concert that was mentioned.
I always associate this show (and Knockout) with having chicken pox in early December of 77!
Happy bday Jim Tom
Maybe there is a video on UA-cam with the prize theme
Alex used to be a bro with a fro.
I miss his 'stache
Alex passed away yesterday from stage 4 pancreatic cancer at the age of 80. R.I.P. Alex Trebek....thanks for
the memories.

I used to always wish Kenny Williams would open with "To Say The Least! And here's the host with the most, Tom Kennedy!".
That particular week that would work, with the Man With The Action Alex Trebek was a celeb player

It faced off against the better sex on ABC and the young and the restless on CBS.
If this aired early 78 then this was just before his next game show Whew?!
Alex Trebek was the only celebrity on this show never to appear on the $10,000/$20,000 Pyramid. The rest did.
That becomes mildly ironic when you consider that, during Donnymid's run, they had a J! category where the clues were Pyramid clues given by a member of the Clue Crew sitting in the Winners' Circle.
@@JayTemplethey sure are
Rita comes from the Sesame Workshop programme "Electric Company". The "Hey you guys!" lady.
A Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer TV production.
Prior to that, she was in the film version of "West Side Story". She was a Broadway actress of some repute before PBS itself came along.
and maybe the off stage theme
the nine-word answer could have been candles
Jack Narz (Tom's brother) also isn't there.
Kenny Williams announcing here
Is this the same Ken Fisher who's now a billionaire/investment banker? Check out his Facebook page and decide for yourself.
No
Yo Wink, I got a question: is "To Say The Least" completely intact?
Cause they looked like they're intact
No, most of TSTL was destroyed.
Tom Kennedy 51 birthday on the day of show
Alex with a contestant named Ken. Didn’t that happen 75 times? Lol
Who to guess, I set so great it was NBC's To Say The Least. We want to know where it was. Short Lived or Long run. Tell us about it.

WASNT ALEX DOING HIGH ROLLERS AND 128, 000 QUESTION AROUND THAT TIME OR DOUBLE DARE
I think Alex was doing the 128k question and he’s about to do or probably already has done the pilot for the new high rollers, which returned a few months later.
This game show was back in the 70’s and 80’s era
Did GSN ever air this?
I Don’t Remember This Game Show!
I remember the opening faintly when I was a younger kid.
I'm just glad Jim Cornette wasn't there.😆
Man, this is bad. It is incredibly slow. Takes too long just to eliminate words; no action. Would never work now.
Actually, it can. Remember we have faster tech these days. You could have black boxes to denote where the eliminated words would go, plus the words would be dropped automatically.
The concept is not terrible, but the bonus game is a joke. It is nearly impossible to win and just disappointing most of the time.

IKR, the 70's and *80's had so many game shows.
I don't remember this.

I think this game show could work today, if they do it right.
