      They were coming into markets with larger stage shows than others, complicated rigging and electrical needs. If there were brown M&Ms in the dressing room, then that was an indicator that the venue/promoter wasn’t detail-oriented and there could be serious safety concerns.

      Fernandez was making Strats better than Fender in the 80s... or wasnt until Fender was sold by CBS and people who cared more about the guitars got involved... for the most part anyway. I bought a vintage late 80s "Fiesta Red" Fernandez at Norman's Rare Guitars for $400... best $400 I ever spent on a guitar! I call out... Fernando, the most interesting guitar in the world! 😎🎸🤘

      I had an instructional video from over a decade ago, which had a guy playing a Fernandes. It looked and sounded really great, and I’ve wanted one ever since. But, in all these years, I’ve never seen one for sale! Don’t think I’ve seen anyone else playing one! These guitar companies constantly shoot themselves in the foot, because they don’t get the guitars out there.

      Tell Billy Joe Armstrong, Kirk Hammet, Robert Trujillo, and Robert Fripp that. As for hard to find? You have an internet connection, I'll assume - since you're using this platform. I've bought three Fernandes instruments in the last 12 months. They blow Fender and Gibson off the map. The frustrating thing is Fernandes' debt is about what one of the artists I named - for all of whom Fernandes builds custom instruments - earn in a week.

    💯percent correct! I’ve been playing guitar for over 50 yrs and made 1,000s of pawn shop laps shopping for gear. I’ve only seen 1 or 2 Fernandez guitars in all that time … however I’ve bought 4 Fernandez Sustainiac pickup kits to hot rod some Telecasters and I love them🎸😎

    I work in coatings and wood finishing. PLEASE never stain Rosewood. Unless it's been chemically damaged please don't. It's got all the colour it needs to look good. Most dark stains tend to make it muddy looking. Most toner stains and dyes tend to give it no favours in looks either. It's a dark wood and dark wood looks horrible when you stain it. Stick to Linseed Oil or similar finish, and just enjoy how it ages. Chef's kisses.

    Thank you, Phil for all you do! You spoke of playing guitar during the week, my original bass player from the band I played in starting 50 years ago came back to New Jersey from California. Of the 6 of us (lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bassist, drummer, front man/singer, and trumpet/keyboard (Hammond organ/Leslie, Rhodes, ARP Strings and MiniMoog), 4 members of the band were 18+ years old. This allowed us to play in places that sold alcohol. At the time, I was the keyboard/trumpet player and along with the drummer we were at the time 14 years old, working Friday and Saturday nights at the same place for 3 months at a time and making $50.00 a night and playing 3 sets each of 40 minutes of music. Those days are long gone and clubs with live bands is few and far between. So, now we play for ourselves and our families. But, we are still here 50 years later. The point being that in music, age means nothing. The love of playing an instrument (I first picked up a guitar 14 years years ago when my son gave me 2 guitars when I was in the middle of recovering from a long illness). The guitar bug bit me and I love playing the instrument, I still love playing keyboards and trumpet, the point being that music, whichever instrument one might play, is a lifetime endeavor.

    Squier is an amazing brand for the cost. Jack Pearson uses these as his guitar of choice for most of his live performances. He could probably get endorsements for any brand he wants and has other guitars at home that he likely uses for studio work, but his stage instruments are stock squier and he sounds amazing.

    Does anyone know Godin’s marketing strategy? I keep waiting for the hammer to fall as it did with Fernandez. I have four beautiful older high end Godin’s that will be bequeathed to my kids. No intentions of selling them. I just do not understand why they continue to push out new models at prices comparable with Fender. For instance the Alex Lifeson S style at almost $5,000.00 Canadian with tax is in the Fender Custom Shop range. I can almost guarantee the resale value in two years will be half that. As a Canadian, I want to see a Canadian guitar maker do well but I am flummoxed by Godin’s drive to compete dollar for dollar with Fender and Gibson.
    I have owned and sold both Fenders and Gibsons and only took a marginal loss. Still have one of three Strats left which will stay with me. I would love to see Godin focus on possibly 3-4 models and not flood the market with mutant versions continually. Survival over quantity.

    I agree on the Fender Rumble amp
    I have one that is more than enough for at home, and even many jamming scenarios
    And on top of the sound, they are so light and easy to move.

    • @Last_one_before_I_go
      @Last_one_before_I_go Місяць тому

      I tend to agree, I had a Rumble 25 and now a 40A. Great lightweight amps with a very good tone. However, the cabinetry construction/design left me underwhelmed, where after a while I found internal glue joints would weaken with heat, producing an annoying cabinet buzz across the tone spectrum. After much diag work and different attempts, I had to resort to sinking 1 1/2" drywall screws into various locations to solve things. Works fine tho ! Recently I picked up a Hartke 75W amp at a deep discount - Thats a solid amp that produced a smooth, powerful sound superior to the Rumble but it weighs in at close to 50 lbs.

  • @NotBCT
    @NotBCT Місяць тому +9

    23:20 the reason why FGN is probably not pushing hard is probably for the same reason Cort isn't pushing as hard as you'd think they would.
    FujiGen has a lot of contracts with many other brands (most notably Ibanez Prestige and Fender Japan's JV line) and make far more guitars for them than they do their in-house FGN brand.
    FGN is pretty much relegated to the same position Cort is for Cor-Tek (who also make more guitars for other brands than they do for themselves).
    That being said, I've got a couple of them myself (as well as a few of the ones they make for Japanese Domestic brands like History and Cool Z), and they're awesome. You could probably score an FGN JOS for around half or less the price of a Ibanez Prestige AZ and get roughly the same guitar without the Ibanez brand mark-up (or Ibanez exclusive Seymour Duncan Hyperion pickups, they're usually SD JBs). Same thing with a Cort and a Premium AZ.

  • @thisdyingsoul76
    @thisdyingsoul76 Місяць тому

    The good thing about Josh, is he doesn't just stick to his pedals. He delves into the history of the circuits. He discusses the pedals that came before by Boss, EHX, DOD/Digitech and MXR, as well as others and he promotes the origin brands as well as some of the budget options that people who would never spend the money for a JHS or Wampler pedal would be interested in.
    Josh's channel is good for the whole guitar effects industry.
    Fernandez failed because they didn't market themselves. I hadn't heard from them in 15 years. The last artists I heard using them were the guitarists for Rob Zombie in the early 2000's and whoever was playing rhythm guitar with Slash in the 2000's when Gilby Clarke wasn't involved.
    Godin has the same issue. I feel they also focus in the beginner and intermediate market. They have some high end stuff, but they aren't marketing it. They're North America's biggest guitar manufacturer but most would never know. They own so many small brands. They need to advertise their high end products.

    About TIM'S winning picture taken in Hong Kong for any who are curious. Native NYC son here now based in HK so I know for sure. :)
    His picture was taken from across the body of water known as Victoria Harbor from the district area known as Kowloon, perhaps specific neighborhood of Tsim Sha Tsui. The view of the camera is towards the south looking at the main, generally most famous portion of the Hong Kong island urban skyline.
    To use USA, New York City perspective, his shot would be similar to one taken from Brooklyn or Jersey, looking towards the Manhattan skyline.
    The district neighborhoods the shot shows over his shoulder of Hong Kong island includes parts of Central, Admiralty, Wanchai and Causeway Bay.
    Tim, if you're somehow still in HK and you see this, hit me up here lol. Let's go have some beers and I'll show you around HK a bit :)

    I had the same S2 singlecut semi hollow
    Played nice, and was comfy as hell with its light weight.
    But sonically, it was just lacking; unplugged or otherwise - when compared to my 10+lb core 2000 singlecut.
    Nice guitar either way, but it was missing “something”

    Gibson does a 12 month revenue of 700 million. So, I don't know what that means as far as market value or debt held, but they do 700 million in business for a 12 month period according to what ai could dig up.

    Original formula Fiebings Leather Dye for staining fingerboards. Scrub ALL the oil and gunk from your fingerboard with naphtha. Twice. This "empties" the wood of any oils in the fingerboard, and allows the dye to penetrate deeper. Use a cotton swab to carfully get the dye onto the fingerboard. (Wear rubber gloves, and don't get the dye on ANYTHING you don't want permanently stained. In my experience, it won't adhere to bindings or inlays, but you might want to test.) Let it soak in for 30-60 minutes, then hit it again. After another 30-60 minutes, carefully start wiping off the excess with clean paper towels. Keep doing this untill the paper towls come away clean. Let dry for a few days to a week, then wax with Johnsons Paste Wax or Renaissance Wax, twice. After fingerboard planing during a refret revealed that the ebony board on my #1 classical was actually a streaky rosewood board, I performed this method to return the guitar to its former "ebonized" glory. Worked perfectly, and after 9 years, it's still ebony-black. Fingers do NOT come away dirty from playing it.

    I'm surprised an artist like Metallica doesn't have at least one spare amp on the road. I get it, with a brand like Ampeg, they can pretty much find a replacement at a music store near by, but I wouldn't take the chance. My local ampeg dealer has the lower cost amps in stock. The high end, it can get within days, but usually sends to it's stores in bigger cities.

    As far as Fernandes, I buy and have owned many. Other than MIJ Jacksons and Aria, they are my favorite brand. The higher end FGZ models are killer. My understanding was that most production ceased of Fernandes in 2013, with the exception of the high dollar prospec and artist models. Burny was definitely still making guitars. That could be why the sales show just 1 mill, that would only be about 300 pieces of high dollar pro guitars. Their models from 85-95 were killer.

I can probably count on one hand, how many times I've even seen a Fernandes at a guitar shop. I didn't even realize that Burny was an active brand until a couple of years ago.

    Suing another company for whatever reason doesn't take time away from building great guitars. PRS and Gibson both have teams of lawyers who handle this. The CEO, CFO and COO might be somewhat involved but it's not impacting the tech on the production floor nor does it prevent new products from being developed.

      It's good stuff, not cheap, but I'd say a tin would probably last a lifetime. It's turned the far too light laurel fingerboard of my orange Gretsch 5422 into something much, much darker (took about five applications over a few weeks) and more fitting for the style of guitar.
      One thing I will say - I saw a tip suggesting that once you've applied it run a hairdryer over it to warm and soften the wax so it soaks in better, and leave it overnight before buffing it up. I tried that after the first couple of applications , and it made a big difference.
