Casey Neistat is a UA-camr with nearly 12 million subscribers. He’s best known for his daily vlog series which lasted over 800 days straight until he finally called it quits. Daily vlogging existed before Neistat started doing it, but he gave the genre something it desperately needed: quality. Casey brought 10 years of professional video experience to a subgenre that rewarded amateurism. And in doing so, he helped popularize the vlog format and elevate it to a real art form.

amazing video man -- stuck around all the way to the end, really loved the storytelling :)
Hey Elliot!! I love your videos!!
Wow look who showed up here lol :o
Elliot!!!
Great breakdown of Casey Neistat's reign on UA-cam 👍
Ok time out... Creating his own genre? Nah can't say that. But he did seize the opportunity, I will say that 😉
I love that he was honest enough to talk about all this in public. In this current culture of entrepreneurship where people like Gary V tell us that if we arnt working from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep then were failures, we end up wasting our entire lives chasing this arbitrary concept of success.
I think that's a very silly mindset from Gary. The goal should be to be efficient as possible, create a plan and constantly revise that plan in order to get more work done in less time.
GaryVee is so off-puttin
Thats not what Gary believes. He only believes that idea for people complaining they aren't successful or are unhappy with their current position and not doing anything to better it. He's talking to the complainers when he says those things, he has gone over this in quite a few videos recently. Gary talks frequently about how your happiness in the ultimate success, "if you're happy, you've won". He knows many people are happier making less or working something simpler rather than making more and working to the extreme, he has said this in many videos. I don't mean any negativity towards you, I just thought I'd highlight what I think about Gary. Your point is definitely valid for a lot of the culture, I just don't think it lines up like that with Gary.
@@ConorEiffe After reading this and looking a little more closely into him, your right, I made a bit of a snap judgement. I'd only seen a few of his videos, back when the whole self-improvement genre started to take off (I.E right after the Ty Lopez here in my garage video) so I hadnt seen pretty much any of his newer videos.
@@wesleypatterson2267 Its all good man, there definitely was a point where it wasn't as clear with him when that self-improvement stuff was getting big. I think he emphasises it a lot more now which is good because it can be so damaging.
Selling a start-up for $25 million, and becoming a household name, doesn't really qualify as destruction. The man now has the expertise, resources, and creative freedom to pretty much do what he wants. Many have gone through this kind of journey with little or nothing to show for it. Casey appears to be in a very good place now with a promising future; and can be very proud of his accomplishments.
It was a destruction for him because it took so much time he couldn't be with his family. It is more than money buddy
fully agree
He didn't sell a start-up... he sold pure HYPE and it failed, and he got a nice amount in the spoils and CNN took the hit to avoid bad press.
@@tabba1376 Yup. Beme wasn't anything but a dream
I'm glad his hipe is gone
Man you are an incredibly talented storyteller. I'm so glad I stumbled onto your videos and I can't wait until you become just as big as some of these people that one day another person coming along can maybe tell your story. Love your videos. Keep up the amazing work :)
Dude I felt the same lol, I loved his video on frank ocean that's how I found him
Casey never invented chill hop, he used it to provide a chill atmosphere but the genre has existed for a long time
It's only new to America. I remember listening to a group called Fanso.
They're from Spain or something and the beats the use from Made in M and Juan Rios was so damn dope
Thank u
MultiTwiglet I’m all about some Dilla. Also Madlib and Alchemist are dope as well
Came here to say this.
@@herbalmaharaj8790 W, Nujabes too
It's kinda of inspiring that he gave so much of himself and in a way didn't it work out for Casey. He's legendary. What I took away from this is that anything is possible if you put the work in but there is a cost. I think that cost is totally worth it. I grew up in poverty as well and I think in part he was driven to get away from that as am I. I'm sure a lot of us can relate to that.
Claiming Casey invented any music genre is such an absurd statement to me. Especially when that genre has existed for a long time through artists like DJ Shadow
bangersareforever I agree, rather than inventing, popularising would have been an appropriate description
I was just thinking about this recently. I think he certainly popularized that style of electronic music with manipulated, old soul tracks as hooks. So much so that when I watch a youtube video with that style of music in it, I know where the creator perhaps indirectly got the idea to use it. I know youtube opened their own library of royalty-free tracks and Casey keyed in a particular type of track. I think you could say he didn't invent/create/discover any of that music but he knew where to put it to good use.
exactly! Nothing original, he popularised to an audience who may never of seen or heard of it before. Like most "pros" on youtube they do nothing original.
But it worked and at times was definitely my favorite because it sucked you write into the Story.Deb👍✌
Yep, this style of hip-hop/soul/electro fusion was happening in Japan when I was living in Tokyo the late 1990's
this is so well made man. and as for you, I was waking up every day to his vlogs and sometimes they were needed to get my day going. this is a wonderful tribute to a life guru to me. thank you sosososo much! great work again.
. . . Casey has been an inspiration, being original, and unique. He has helped UA-cam to grow up and come of age !
So happy I found this channel. Started with the Rick Rubin and hip hop artists, but the deeper stuff about Burnham and Casey Neistat, damn. This is great content.
Amazing vid Jake! The amount of time it must have taken to put this together ... I can really appreciate. Casey’s been great to follow and glad he’s prioritizing his fam. Was thrilled to get to see him earlier this year
I'm a huge Casey fan and this was a well crafted video that describes certain aspects from his vlog and life and I appreciate your putting this together. Thanks for the obvious work you put in to this and keep up the good work.
Such a lovely message! Thanks for the detailed look into his career and life.
"he's created his own music genre' ...no, he's simply consistently borrowing music from that genre.
This guy sounds like a person trying to do an impression of someone with a deep voice.
This is beautiful... thank you!! This is so motivating because I have similar parts in my life compared to his story so far. I was wondering-by any chance is there a video or a list, anything! of all the songs on this video by any chance?
Really really good video. This must have taken a ton of work. Excellent choice of material and moments to build the story. I'm a big fan of Casey, and your take on him and his channel ring absolutely true to me. I don't think there's any higher praise to give a documentary.
very in depth analysis man! It must've taken you ages to gather up all the info and footage for this great documentary!
I can't even fathom the amount of Casey videos you had to go through to make this. Still one of the best videos I have ever seen about Casey. Sums up my thoughts about why I loved him in the first place and now I am indifferent to his newer videos.
the way casey talks about the vlog now crushes my soul. i wanted to have the hustle like he did. realizing that this type of work ethic can kill your life, just kinda kills me.
Love your playlist in this video!
*in fully viewing the video, I can see how your playlist is inspired by Casey’s selection :) and as soon as I saw 800 days & the “schedule blocks” segment in the middle where he breaks down what his day looks, I thought to myself “how would he have maintained healthy relationships or been anything but a workaholic with that kind of day, week, month?”
There are so many stories now where people share how daily vlogging has either damaged or destroyed friendships, relationships and marriages.
This should be a key explanation for why the Era of UA-cam Greatness has passed...not only is YT going as commercial as they can, but it’s daily vlogging that is not, in itself, sustainable.
So that model we love so much, done by a solo creator, is too overpowering in a real world format. And it’ll never be as great or relatable if it’s produced in a professional studio, so here we are...
Thanks for this video! I missed out on Casey’s story as it was going on, but it’s a remarkable one to learn from.
I hope Casey watches this.
I hope so too
nah he won't waste time on this nonsense. he has better things to do than sit on youtube all day.
@@9hundred67 its just 23 mins
Great video man and I see you’ve done allot of cool content like this... you’ve got yourself another sub 🤙🏼
Great video! I am a big fan of Casey and he is a big reason I am on UA-cam today. He introduced me to the vlog style of filming and though I do it from time to time, those videos never gain traction for me. So I started making a video that performs and put attention to that. But if it wasn't for Casey giving me that belief that I could create content on this platform, I wouldn't be here. Thanks again for such a great in-depth video on this man that many of us look up to.
I just had a peek at your channel, and you've got some super helpful videos over there!! Glad Casey inspired you to get really stuck into it, because you are doing an awesome job!
@@theadventuresofzoomandbettie Thanks for the compliment. I am a new subscriber to your channel. Looking forward to learning more from you.
Very well thought out and presented vid. Nice work Jake.
Nice job dude! It's amazing just how many people have been inspired in some way or another by Casey Neistat and the work he's done. This video is a great overview and I think you did a good job capturing the spirit of Casey and unpacking some of the more complicated aspects that make him such a unique phenomenon. Keep it up!
glad i found your channel i love the way you word things and translate it through the video
it's 1am in sf and i have work tomorrow morning. i have to say your videos are excellent and well worth the lack of sleep. keep it brother
I must be the only one who find's his vlogs boring. They're never about anything that important or interesting.
finally someone like me
They are awful. I think the only purpose they serve is as an example of good filming/editing for other people who have actual content to film.
imo vlogs inherently are boring. theres a limit to how interesting a youtubers life can get. even if they seem really interesting repetition is gonna kill it. i used to watch a bit of neistats vids cuz his edits are really cool.
@@gapehorn2917 I think he created a genre of editing that appealed and was copied by others. But the actual content was really boring.
Agreed vlogs are boring...i'm sick of the "Hi, welcome back to my channel..."
Totally agree - the ones I've seen are just "look at me, I'm a cool guy with a cool lifestyle, now I'm going to ride my cool electric skateboard and drink something cool and fashionable, it's cool being me, cool." That's it, just like a vapid advertisement for his cool lifestyle - like chewing gum, no substance just flavour.
You had my attention all the way through, this was very well told and filmed. Great job and thanks
Bike Lanes was the first video of Casey's I ever watched... I was hooked from that moment and have been ever since. Great video Jake
Loved loved loved this
Nice portrait, Jake! So many of watched this play out... like a train wreck. It's nice that someone has made a thoughtful summary!
As an early 2010 Casey adopter it hurt to see him have so much success, have his entire brand stolen by every other daily vlogger, and then slowly get burnt out on the entire concept but keep forcing himself to do it.
Great video,
Learned things I didn’t know about Casey, I remember my son telling me about him in 2010 and I was thinking who is this guy and what’s this utube thing, ironically nine years later my wife & I started a art channel and are grinding out our own success.
It’s all about the timing!
Thanks
~Chuck
i’ll never forgot when i was 10 years old on casey’s 800 vlog run i would watch him everyday right after school when i my grandpa picked me up. my grandpa started watching the vlogs with me and to this day he watches every video he drops.
How you haven’t blown up yet? Amazing videos, looking forward for new ones as always.
Nice Vlog .. not many vloggers make me stay till the end ..except Casey . Good job on telling the story !
Hey, I’m from the Bay too 🌁 Loving these shots! They’re beautiful!
Wonderful storytelling as well ;)
Love your videos man. Lots of value in them. Learning a lot. Keep it up!
Came here from the Casey subreddit
FANTASTIC video ! Seriously loved it and I truly truly was smiling and nodding every sec of your story about casey, like jep that is 100% my feelings on the subject.
Thanks for making this amazing video.
Enjoy'd the vid while eating pizza + drinking portugees vine. Off to my grandmas now.
Ole Ole sounds good dude
See ya
Hope you had a nice visit @grandmas! Happy holidays XD
Ole Ole How is she anyway
Ole Ole you should rap on some Alchemist beats.
Absolutely loved and I as well have watched and so picked up so much watching.Truly Amazing loved how much you caught from this as well and how you included the Family which to me by the way are absolutely incredible.Love the Journey through his and Candice life and all the hard work.Very well done Deb 👌👍✌P.S.Keep Going
Insightful video. Found out something new and enjoyed watching the video. (a bit of ads) I have watched all of his videos and he inspires me too. Thanks for the video. Best day & Best wishes to you & yours.
I’m very impressed on this video! You did a great job portraying Casey and his legacy.
had some trouble getting two types of stickers in the cart but bought a couple anyways. great video and keep it up!!!
No a chance he created "chill-hop" lmao wtf
He popularized
Really nice video, did watch it till the end and got to know Casey a bit more through this video. although I did never ever finish his videos till the end, I did watch yours till the end so that's a thumbs up for your creativity and storytelling like Elliot Choy said.
half way thru video. i've seen about dozen vids from casey but damn this in depth summary is really well put together. keep up the great work, will follow your work!
Very glad to have found your channel!
Awesome work man!! Really nice recap!!!
You just forgot about that transition...the coolest one of them all where he spins the camera!!! And you forgot about Georgie Neistat as well!!
Great video! Learned some things about Casey I didn't know, even though I consistently watched his vlogs.
Thank you so much for this video man ! Wonderful storytelling of a man who has inspired a whole generation ! Please keep going !
Another great video! Dope merch too!
Great video bro. Enjoyed watching it.
fantastic documentation of his life .. really Well put and edited ..first time come across your channel ..Liked and Subscribed .look forward to more .. love and encouragement from Mumbai, India
This is such an informative video. It's not like a lot of videos on famous UA-camrs who just like to use a famous face/name in thumbnail for views. So glad I watched till the end.
As someone who leads a pretty uneventful life, I very much enjoyed and looked forward to Casey's vlogs.
Ah well come on, now's not too late to make it more eventful!
Great video man. Casey is a legend and has inspired so many to do what they want. Just found your channel and subscribed. Would be good to do a collab video sometime in the future.
Great job Jake you described things so well. Thanks for the update
Thanks for the film, it was really cool to see a summary of Casey's career as the main UA-camr in such an insightful way. :)
Absolutely love everything I’ve seen on your channel. Your curation is at level “youtube professor of cool” - quite the high honors!
Dude I can't even imagine how much time this must've taken to put together. Incredible work
I only have like 9 subs but man I started all of this because of this man. He really inspired me to give it a go no matter what. Great vid man. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a vid without skipping through in a while.
Lonely Champions I only have 38 subs and Casey inspired me to start doing videos too... sub I’ll sub back
Your videos always inspire me
This was fantastic. It really helped fill in the gaps of my knowledge of Casey. Good job dude.
You have a brilliant UA-cam channel mate. Keep it going!
Great videos, great work. Thanks! Subscribed 💜✌🏽
grossly understated Tom Sachs studio, and the exposure/networking that go with working in one of the most successful contemporary art studios.
You're honestly one of my favorite video creators right now. I really loved this breakdown of Casey👏👏
Awesome vid !!
As a Casey watcher, awhile ago, this was a treat
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great content. Love it!
Just ran into this video on UA-cam. As soon as I heard that voice I knew exactly who this was. Keep grinding out the channel brother!
-Jimmy from C.O.G.S. and Youth Group
love your vids bro, watched casey too for a long time great to see him appreciated
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to make this!
Bro your editing has gotten so much better with every video
Casey Neistat has inspired me to the point that I had to watch his vlogs every single night (as an obligation before going to sleep). Starting in UA-cam as a new creator entails guidance from those who know and understand film making, and Casey was that youtuber who can give you the best examples you need. Thank you for this video!
Very well done, thank you for sharing! Important caution at 20:00 which I'll forward to my creators New York Central so they don't work me every single day.
GREAT VID! Miss Casey but good on him for being sane! Thanks for this great bio and stay sane!
Subbed , great honest content
I loooove Casey too. I found out about him I think about halfway through his vlogs. Thanks for the vid
🙂
This is the best Casey summary I have ever seen. Thanks man.
Great video. Well told and well organized.
Aside from the "Casey invented Chill Hop" instead of saying that he applied it in a unique way this was a inspirational video. Subbed.
when he said he was ending vlogs it was a sad day
Ye
I was actually happy for him. I thought his content had started to get stale before he did the cnn deal, and he never really recovered. The production quality never dropped off, in fact it increased when Dan Mace came on board, but he'd lost the spark a long time before he stopped.
This was so much nostalgia! THANK YOU!
very cool Video, loved it! The only comment I have other than it's great is I don't feel Casey invented "chill hop" or LOFI. I'm sure the exposure he gave the genre and artist he used had a big effect however I wouldn't say he invented a genre. Keep up the great work! :)
Thanks for the video!!! Casey needs to keep doing what he is born to do. Like any one he needs to find balance.
for sure the most under rated channel i’ve ever had the pleasure of coming across
Jake, you’re alright. Thanks for the video on Casey - well done. Casey would be proud.
awesome video!!! narration and footage was solid!
Jake zeeman really knows how to make videos enjoyable to watch all the way through.
with just the intro alone i know you’ve got big things ahead
Love how your intro and b roll shots were taken in San Francisco :)
Excellent video. Thanks for making it. Subscribed, liked, and notified, Keep up the good work,
Great video! Just a note Bloomberg was the mayor who brought bike lanes to NYC NOT Guiliani.
opening line was hilarious, instantly made me like the video, like actually gave u a like hhhhahaha
This is such a good summary of what made his vlog so compelling. I thought vlogs were boring and stupid before casey. As someone who grew up in laid back seattle, watching the daily adventures of a self-made workaholic new yorker was really something else. Shame that boosted board also went out of business recently.
Nice job on this buddy. Good luck to you
Great video! You say you have a small channel but I have 2,500 subs so seems like you are huge LOL. Seriously great vid!
