Well done. I think it is the very fact that the ending is simulataneously happy and horrific that makes it such a brilliant and deeply unsettling movie.
Wow, this was an excellent analysis! I've watched the movie a couple of times and with each watch I empathized with the cult more and more. This completely snapped me out of it. The language you used to describe the same scenes I've watched over and over as well as repeatedly showing the brutal (but briefly filmed) murders (not deaths) of her friends dispelled me. It took a minute but I eventually got to "holy hell, they are a murderous cult with no individual identity!"
I loved it - also, remember, she would still be tripping. Mushrooms along with whatever other drugs these crazies had have been building up in their systems since day one! I have done enough things... to know that certain things shouldn't be done in large amounts over days , well unless you want to lose your grip on your melon.
I agree with your take. That's what I love about this movie. You want so much for Dani to get the love and support she desperately needs that you find yourself being seduced by the cult right along with her. Feeling simultaneously happy and horrified at the end is such a unique experience. I think this movie shows more than any other cult movie just how a cult takes advantage of the vulnerable to create such strong attachments.
Depends on your point of view. For Dani its a happy ending for her friends its not. But are they really her friends. They definitely are Christians friends but seem like hers.
I actually would argue it is not a happy ending for Dani either. She has been brainwashed by the cult and while she finds catharsis at the end, she has been assimilated and no longer really exists. Not as an individual. Though I understand the perspective that she has a happy ending and think it is a fair interpretation
@@horror_obsession I like this analysis and your reply about dani being no more since by the end shes been assimilated into the cult. Never heard no one else saying this lol. It reminds me of john carpenter's the thing. The cult is like the thing and dani is one of the people being assimilated except in the thing they are copied. But they still look like the person but they're not the person they're part of the organism or in this case a cult lol. This analysis definitely changes perspective on the movie lol. Still good though. Actually even more interesting now. I'm aware of some of this like the love bombing which is part of brainwashing but this analysis definitely interesting and very cool.
@@chrislawson1988 I was thinking very much of The Thing and other Body Snatcher movies! That is one of my favorite sub genres so probably why it was on my mind
I was honestly shocked at how ridiculously bad was the critical drinker's video about this movie. Like... did he watch it at all? Did he ever have... like any basic storytelling class in school? The whole thing felt like a video for men's rights activists, where he was either being very dumb or deliberately trying to present a false picture of this movie. Yet he has tons of followers... wtf, youtube? ._.
I think the movie is also making fun of white supremacists like a satire. The symbols almost look like nazis and they wear all white like the kkk. They also kill the people who aren’t white, and a lot of the sounds and songs the Swedish people make are pretty funny. I don’t think aster ever discussed this openly tho

Ah thanks, that was basically the idea haha. Glad you enjoyed it
The whole movie is a shroom trip... It all finally makes sense...

The movie doesn't have a happy or sad ending. It just has an ending.
It’s as much a “happy ending” as Helter Skelter was a happy book.
They did murder her boyfriend, but those guys were not her friends.
Great analysis, while it's definitely not a movie I love as much as Hereditary, I admire it and look forward to Aster's next "nightmare comedy".
I don't put much stock into what Critical Drinker thinks. There's always the Saw movies.

I think it's a happy ending or sad ending depending on which one you choose for it to be. I see it as both at the same time.
What movie is that “I’m the protagonist” clip from?
Tenet
Crazy Miss who kills her boyfriend? Masterpiece?

The UA-cam algorithm is a cruel mistress

In the director’s cut Christian knows about the sex ritual and agrees to take part... I wish they had left that in!
I definitely think that would have gotten the message across they were going for A LOT better than the version they went with
