How to work out with an injured back: The 10 best exercises to try

  • Does your back hurt? It’s frustrating and can feel tough to get in a good lower body workout!
    In this video we give you ten of our favorite exercises to test out when you’re in this situation. These are exercises you’ll likely be able to add weight and push a bit harder, even when your back is achy. You can continue to strengthen the lower body while you see a specialist or problem solve the issue.
    For most of the exercises, we’re looking to increase the amount of knee movement and keep oneself vertical, as this often feels safer to many when navigating a tweaked back.
    For some of the other exercises - like the one legged squat or lateral lunge - we’re looking to challenge things with more intense work on the legs, so that we don’t have to load down the spine and back. These exercises can also be done with an assist, if they are too difficult.
    You don’t need to do all of these exercises in your training! Test out a few reps of each. When you find several that work best for you, do 2-3 sets for a great lower body workout!
