Wendy, the 91 street station was closed on February 2, 1959. This station has been abandoned for 58 years. Where are you getting that the 91 st station was closed in the early 90's?
Reggie Rodriguez lol thank you. Im actually typing this from 90th and Amsterdam. Im from here. Im in my 30s and there was never an entrance on 90-91. Only 86st or 93-96st.
@@graystar212 As the original entrance was probably sealed and paved over, though I do wonder if the rest of the upstairs of that station is intact. All I know with some abandoned stations is that only way to access some from the street is probably from a hatch or manhole meant for inspecting the tunnel.
In the 1950's the stations along the No. 1 line were lengthened to accommodate longer trains. You can tell this in the various stations at one end or another. This applies to all the stations including the 96th and 86th St. stations. Yet if the 91st St. station had been lengthened, that would have meant that the train would pull out of it almost immediately into the 96st St. or 86th St. stations due to the short 5-block distance. (For non-New Yorkers, north-south blocks in New York are very short). They decided simply to close 91st. So the 91st St. station was never lengthened and if they stopped a train there today the entire length of the train would not have access to a platform.
@@86kickass The 7th Avenue 18th Street station (on the 1 line) is still in use. I suspect the neighborhood raised a stink and convinced the MTA to leave it in operation.
In the summer of 1997, I went with a group of other railfans on a tour called Day One On The IRT. Our group went on the southbound platform of the abandoned 91st Street Station. We would pile into the lead car of the 1 downtown local at 96 Street station ,the operator would stop at the middle of the platform, and our tour guide opened the lead door of the first car. Once we were out, the train went on its way to its destination. After our guide gave the best explanation he could in between trains of all sorts roaring through the tunnel, he would communicate to the dispatcher that we were ready for pickup on the next downtown local. Sure enough, the 1 local slowed up, he opened the lead door of the first car, we piled in, and we were on our way to the next destination of our tour. It was a blast seeing the R-62's and the classic Redbirds in their element racing through the tunnel to their destinations!!
Very dangerous dude. Just a heads up. Some of these tunnels have sensors that will trigger if you are in a restricted area and will notify that cops of someone in the tunnel and of course if any conductor or train operators see someone in the tunnel it will cause all trains to stop because nobody wants to hit someone.
1. No clearance zone. 2. Derbies. 3. Any emergency situation. 4. A train that can use the same tracks a different direction literally next second. Tones of shit can happen. Besides that it's a pure trespassing and TO can call cops any moment.
Much better than that buzzfeed shit. Buzzfeed video: OH MY GOD WE STAYED ON A TRAIN THAT WENT PAST AN ABADONED PLATFORM!!!! SUCH A REBEL This video: Yeah we just hopped onto the tracks and ran to an abandoned station with trains running, no big deal
What was the station at the very beginning of the video? Also how did you know you'd be safe to sprint to 91st street? How long does it take for another train to pass after the first one has pasted? Lastly, thank you for making this. I'll have to keep an eye out the next time I visit the city to see what mysterious little spots are quite literally hiding around the corner or just out of sight.
that depends, some stations trains run as soon as two minutes, other times ten, the loud speaker usually announces when the next train is arriving but it isnt always accurate, so its pretty risky if you dont know what youre doing
@@graystar212 he actually ran from 86th street. You can see it based on how there is only a platform for the local trains and not the express train and local train like on 96th street
Once you are at the station when do u leave? Planning to do it soon with my friends. I live right next to the area just don't know how to get back from the station.
Bro I love running thru the tunnels and going to abandoned stations like the thrill of getting arrested and the threat of dying it is what makes it fun a really easy station to run to is 15 st prospect park on the f train and also something above ground like avenue H on the q train even tho they’re not abandoned
theres a trainstation somewhere going towards the city part. I do not know where it is nor the street. but it was separated in 3 tracks and 3 platforms. 2 of them were in use and the one all the way across the dark track was the dark and vacant spooky station platform where the trains used to stop by. Now they just drive right past them without stopping. The stairways are gated as well.
I've always wanted to go and check it out that station but don't want to go alone for safety reasons. It's better to go in a group of at least 4 or 3. You and 3 or 2 others. I was going to attempt going alone back in 1998 but I was too afraid to go alone not knowing who could be at the station.
Reggie Rodriguez Wow. Well I am planning on going in a couple of years, when I am about 16-17. I plan on bringing just regular sweat pants, boots, and a sweater. A bag with water, food, flashlights, and maybe a baseball bat. Do you have any tips for me?
Ethan, go with at least 2 of your buddies and leave the bat home. Don't carry that extra weight. Put some gloves on before going into the tunnel, always be careful with the third rail because it's electrified, bring a mask to protect yourself from breathing potential harmful dust and asbestos that may be in air on the abandon station such as 91 st, Bergen st. Etc. Bring a plastic bottle of rubbing alcohol and bandages in case you or your buddies gets cut along the way. Make sure your skin such as your arms and legs are not exposed. Know the times that the next train will run through the tunnels. The schedules are listed in the mta website. When you're running in the tunnels, don't make too much noise, when you're at the station, don't talk loud. Make sure no mta employees sees you. If you see a rat don't run away, scare it away instead. I have been in the tunnels before when I was a teenager. It feels like a rush and your life flashes before you
Reggie Rodriguez Holy crap, thanks. This is some good information, I really appreciate the help dude. Wow I can't believe it so much more complicated than I thought.
The plan was that if a train stopped at one station, some part of it would hang over to another neighboring station (Don't know why, I think that makes no sense). I think it was somehow stupidly designed and got too far from the 96 and 86th Street stations, so it had to be closed.
Wait couldn't u use 96th street as ur starting point to run to the 91st station cuz starting in 86 street station is a lot more dangerous cuz its mush more further
96 street has a dispatcher office since its technically a terminal station during G.Os. Plus there is alot more security and police so it’s not a good idea
This channel is the only place to find good footage of abandoned NYC subways, thanks bro!
+Shadowdreamcast I will be uploading footage soon

I would definitely want to join you guys on a trip one day
+German Martinez what line did they go on
Hoodylive Swag 1 line
I reckon that during the 1980's era. That they're were break dancers, head spinners and mural artist that used to hang out on that platform
Reggie Rodriguez it was only abandoned in the early 90s

Well said and if still open the the announcement saying 91st Street first five cars only similar to 145th Street 3 train
Same logic that the 18th st station on the 6 line is abandoned bc they extended 14th street and 23rd street
@@86kickass The 7th Avenue 18th Street station (on the 1 line) is still in use. I suspect the neighborhood raised a stink and convinced the MTA to leave it in operation.
It can only lengthen it by one car to fit 5 cars like at the 145 the Street Lenox Ave station before 148th on the 3 line

Of course, but the adrenaline is more important :)
Well what are you doing that needs restricting
All these older stations seem so much larger than most. At least in terms of platform area, not length.
0:29 Emergency exit? By the way. How do you run so fast with your steel balls dragging you down? This is insane!
should have stood at the edge of the platform in a grim reaper outfit lol
That will be funny🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I WILL DO THAT AT SOME POINT OF MY LIFE-
The people on the train .. - 🤨👀😳
WTF? You are risking your body to get footage of an abandoned station for us to see? Now that is commitment.
Well it's interesting for him as well cause if it wasn't he wouldn't do it.
LOL
How is it risking? You literally have to run as soon as the 1 train leaves

Abandoned train stations freak me out bad 😅
It amazes me how much power is wasted just lighting up these abandoned platforms where no one is supposed to be.
It's for workers
it's so that the tunnels aren't completely pitch black plus new York is known for using tons of electricity
And it helps you when you evacuate the Train in the tunnel
Nichols gunness how you get thumbs up when all you’re saying is pretty much agreeing with the guy?!
Power is cheap, maintenance is expensive
amazing commitment to bringing us this footage! thank you. i live right by the 72nd St station and had no idea.
72nd and 91 is two different stations 💀
The name us local kids had for this train station was “ghost town”!
It was a famous graffiti tagging spot back in the 80s!
did you go up the staircase / what is up there?
also, did you have like an emergency back up plan? i can imagine so many things could’ve gone wrong.
Emergency exit to the street.
Awesome job on this exploration!
I'm from Chicago and find this very interesting to watch, NY has one huge train system going on

Dimitri Shaddaa In DC even during rush you would have 8 minutes at least. But there are ni abandoned stations and it is more secure.
KK027 X Alrighty. Thanks! So I'm guessing it's like 10 minutes between trains at the worse time in NYC then?

What's above the platform on street level now?

Miles Campbell not 5 blocks. The 96 station has an entrance at 93rd st. So he’s running two-3 blocks.
Either way I would still lose my breath I’m out of shape and fat lol
I kept expecting a "Cloverfield" twist there at some point...
The original irt line.i grew up on 91st west greystone hotel
I used to run up in there in 94 with the chrome and ultra flat black
Woah, this guy is badass.
is this station possible to go to ? in 2018? is it safe you think?
This explains alot.
would be interesting so see, what they didnwith the entrance. The stairs are clearly still there
