This stations was built to be the "flagship station" of the Interborough Rapid Transit Company. It is like no other station in the system. The architecture and tile work are unlike any of the other stations and would be impossible to replicate at any price. It is a true jewel of the system. It had to be taken out of service because the trains got longer in number of cars and in length of each car. I guess the Transit Museum does run occasional tours through the station. It is unfortunate that it can't be reopened for regular use or as an offshoot of the Transit Museum.
This and the 91st station are the two oldest existing stations in the entire system if I remember correctly. All the older stuff was built over and demolished. This is the nicest of all stations active and abandoned.. I use to go here all the time in the 90s.. There is some stuff older but it's just service rooms.
Looks to be pretty clean for being closed since 1945. Must be monitored from time to time, I would feel like homeless people would love it if they discovered this
Im sure they would like it..as would anyone else but I doubt they can live there coz it's too bright, gets checked on frequently by the city. They would rather choose the unseen graffiti /secluded spots.
I love that station so much. It's so unique, interesting and full of history. Too bad it's not in use anymore. Wish it was and the line would be used by shorter subway cars.
You are impressed for the same reason I am. That station has personality. The Chandeliers, the wide beautiful arches, the brown, gold and green wall tiles and the cleanliness.
You can't have shorter subway trains. The system is already at capacity. Running shorter trains with fewer cars would reduce capacity. Also wouldn't be worth the maintenance, cleaning and staffing budget with Brooklyn Bridge station being so close by. They originally closed it because few passengers were using it.
Excellent, I've always wanted to see City Hall Station. In better shape than I thought for having been closed 80 years ago. Obviously they're somewhat maintaining it, at least changing lightbulbs. I was surprised all the lights are on, including the now 120 year old chandeliers.
Wow ya finally made 2 city hall...1 of the best & my most favorite Abandoned Station in NYC...that camera has good freaking high quality! It records so live & Perfect
You guys are braver than I am. I wouldn't risk being arrested for trespassing, and I sure wouldn't walk down the tracks from the Brooklyn Bridge station to get to this station.
I find it really interesting the the station is very curved resembling the stations on the London underground to a certain extent, it looks a lot like the circle and h&c platform at bakerstreet
Thank you for just lettting the pictures speak. Ive just knocked off three other vids about this station half way through because they had lame music or irritating commentary. Dont know if its just me, but the silence was most appreciated. Much better that way.
Back in the 1990s when I first moved to NYC out of business school, you could actually ride the 6 train as it turned around to head back north through the City Hall loop. They stopped that in the early 2000s but that station was amazing to look at back in the day when you could see it for yourself on the 6 train.
@@pamelaeastburn7978 They let you stay on the train again? They started going through every car forcing us off so we could not do that. You can do it now?
Wow this is cool for all the people around the world who will never get to visit New York you are sharing with them and that’s special. I hope you keep doing videos
It's never going to be used as a major station again. It's just impractical. The platform is too short, and the doors of the cars sit too far back from the platform to be considered safe. That and the fact that when this station first went into service in 1904, subway trains pulled far fewer cars than they do in the present day, meaning you wouldn't be able to offload the old passengers, and pick up the new ones in all the cars in one stop. You'd have to unload the first ones, pull forward a bit, and unload the remaining cars. That's just a pain in the ass, if you ask me. It's a real shame it's past it's usefulness... because it's a beautiful piece of architecture.
The one thing that's really nice they do tours. It's $35 and adults for a tour and it's gorgeous.. but the thing is since the coronavirus came I don't know if they're still doing the tours
Yan Andrukhov It also doesn’t make sense to just leave it abandoned my товарищ! The only reason why this station should not be currently opened for public use is because MTA does a terrible job at maintaining stations and this station would look terrible in a few years without maintenance.
Awesome channel, thanks for all this, this is the best vid of this location i've seen... to see it legally essentially you have to be a member of the transit museum (!??!?) and then pay another thing to get a tour of it
ive been through it once long ago. back then you could legally ride the train as it made its loop to its uptown traffic side. from my understanding today the station has been renovated and has tours. but still doesnt function as a serviced station.
Its majestic!!! They have a similar situation in Toronto Canada... I got to see it and walk out the service street exit... Its no where near as opulent as NYC but the period is the same and the historical nostalgia is cool.
Wow. This is gorgeous. We don't have anything like this in Australia. Thankyou for focusing on the station and not constantly yourselves. The end when the stationary camera was filming, are those arches above the train the skylights?
Yes. Blacked out with paint during World War II, then the paint was removed a few years ago. Dark in this video because I assume they trespassed after dark.
I wish you would have filmed how you got there. Did you hop off the 6 while it looped around or did do the tour? Inquiring minds want to know how you got there.
When I was there 9/11/21 week, I stayed on the #6 to ride through it. They got me real good by stopping for about 3 minutes. I thought I was made. But evidently it was just to sync up with the schedule.
Wow just beautiful....it has so much details ...they dont built such things anymore...if u think how many people walked those sreps and filled that place with life. So sad its not ipen anymore

My biggest fear as a New York we. An empty train station and terribly quiet and dark. Imagine the train not going through there. My other fear. Train stations that are long and weird to get out if. Atlantic ave station and Canal street on the A line. This vid alone makes me sad. I am glad for the train noise. Just gives me a sense of hope. NYC is horrible with no people or animals. It's a death trap on its own. The city literally cannot function.on its own. It would fall apart within days of people evacuating. The city would be under water in a year except uptown Broadway on 181St. The movie "I am legend" has me in tears every time I watch it. The horrible sound of just wind going through the city every day.
Way better than buzzfeed's shit video. They just took the train through and got some dark blurry shots of the ceiling.

The upkeep is also shown through the fact that most of the lighting still works

The color lines under the car numbers are yard stickers. Red=240 st yard, Orange=livonia yard, Green=Westchester yard, Purple=Corona yard
It looks like where the final fight of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them takes place.
