LADY & BARON... Will they BEHAVE when Working Together??? // Training Draft Horses!

  • We are doing some more training with our Suffolk Punch draft horse stallion, Baron. Today we are putting Lady & Baron together and seeing if they will behave when working together! In our last video, we saw that they didn't get along well in the pasture together, so we will see how this goes!! We also share how things are at the farm with the horses, since the death of our Percheron horse Buck. We show how the horses are faring and where Buck was buried. Today we are using Lady and Baron to feed the cows and clear the sleigh ride trail.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Lady made me laugh so much in the beginning, whenever Baron is anywhere near her, the ears go back, but as soon as he's gone, ears forward, happy days! 😂 Poor Baron lol. I love that she temporarily calls a truce once hitched as she knows it's time to work, so funny, she's an awesome mare, can't wait to see her foal.

From the drivers position the horses look similar in size, but Lady really is bigger (not only round) than Baron. Lady is going to protect that foal like CRAZY ! I think the stray cat is meowing just to say Here I am, thanks for looking after me ! I still feel so sad when I think of Buck, but you are right Jim, its what happens on a farm and working with animals. Been there done that ! Thanks for the video, look after yourselves out there.

Thanks again for sharing your video. With all the snow, I was even C.O.L.D. on today's jaunt !! Hopefully, Lady and Baron can get along. After Lady has her baby delivered, I'm sure she'll be VERY protective of her foal !! So Baron, you better behave yourself or you'll be subjected to a "mother's rage" and you'll KNOW what a real kick is !!

I can now see how Lady is looking a bit fuller around her waist, I must say with the wind chill and putting up with a co worker that is a teenager I can see why she is in a poor mood. She doesn't like change. It will teach Barron his place also.

Couple of questions. When is Lady due to foal? When weaned will you keep the foal? When will Baron reach full height and weight? How long before you do serious training on the young Suffolk colts? Will you keep them? How long does it take to train a compliant horse for optimum usefulness or is it an ongoing process?
Your videos are so insightful and educational. You teach what works for you and don't push it on other horse owners. But you don't hesitate to ask viewers for helpful hints and practices. In my book, that makes you a great teacher and responsible horse owner.

    • @DeCasoU1
      @DeCasoU1 Рік тому +1

May for the foal. As for keeping it, well Jim has just unfortunately lost a very good horse and horses don't get any younger. It takes a long time to train a horse and you should not work them until they are old and mature enough. You need enough trained horses to carry out the work that you need to do and you need some slack in your system. Horses are not always able to work. Baron is in training and doing light work. The skeleton of a horse does not become mature until around six years of age though some mature later at eight years or even later. Draft horses mature later than light horses but some drafts mature a little quicker than others and the Suffolk Punch is one of these. For Baron you are probably looking at two and a half years. The young colts are already being trained.
The loss of Buck has come at a most unfortunate time. Jim has work to do with the animals that he has and though he should manage it will not be straight forward as we can see. His time will be under pressure and I for one am grateful that between them they, both Jim and Brenda, are trying to keep people informed.

Life is full of change, eh? That snow couldn't have come at a better time for a huge team-change IMO. someone's lookin' out :). Lady is being a witch, isn't she?? But Jim told her "you're in harness!!", and put them together in the most sensible way. Working Lady and Baron together, in the snow (so kind to young bones and heavy ladies), she teaches him, and at the first I was watching the eveners--they looked pretty even! love watching :)

You mentioned in a previous video about struggling with problems with resistance to dewormers. It's tough to know what to do. I hate to give advice, because parasite problems are not always easy to fix. But you can use some simple natural preventative ways to go along with your dewormers. Though it is not the full answer, Garlic paralyzes parasites and causes them to pass on through. But you have to administer once a month around a full moon, for a few days, every month, because new parasites will hatch then. I also have had good experiences using garlic for colds. After grinding garlic and putting it in molasses and giving it to a horse that had severe upper respiratory problems; and watching how within an half hour her mucus turned from green to clear, I knew I hit on something. I gave garlic/molasses every four hours for a few days; she came out of it very well. I also gave her dried rosehips (Very high in Vita C). Generally they eat the rosehips right out of my hand, but you can grind them up and mix with grain or molasses. Strong Thyme tea is one I use for fungus and killing bacteria. For example if your animal has a mite that feeds on bacteria, a bath with strong Thyme tea will kill bacteria that the mite feeds on. And if the mite lives on blood, then garlic every four hours will kill the mite when he drinks blood full of garlic power.. Vinegar also is a parasite preventative. Many homesteaders put it in their livestock's water. All these things can help keep the number of parasites down and help your dewormers do their job better.. And these simple remedies can help prevent impaction which can happen when too many parasites die at once too quickly.

Kitty wants attention, but is probably too scared to accept it. Lady is NOT amused. She'll be a lot better off for the work though. She'll foal easier for being fit, and clean faster too. My horses all knew their names, and when I was breaking a colt, I would call that colt by name before I told them to walk on, so he wouldn't get caught flatfooted. Another alterative is to give him a tap with the line just before you tell them to go, so he's paying attention.

Good morning! What a nice way to start our day, a sled ride! Yes, looks like Lady's not enjoying pregnancy and work much lately; can't remember her age, but I know she's getting on for a first-time mother. Even in foal, a healthy mare needs a bit of exercise, though, so it's just as well you need her alongside Baron. Some of her crankiness might just be her way of setting boundaries with Baron, making sure he doesn't expect a "cover" every time she's near. I bet if she was in a herd with other mares, she'd be the lead. Am I right? Any experiences pasturing her with other mares?

Your lives there are so clean and wholesome! Like, old basics. Both horses seem to know when they are harnessed up and hooked up, no horsing around, a lot to be said for the blinders, I think. Lovely video, you both must be very fit. Greetings from Australia.

"Baron is getting tired." Working in the deep snow is surely a good thing for him, he'll learn he's got to pace himself, eh.

That Lady can pin her ears as flat as my cat, Alice, does when she's mad! The second Jim walked her past Baron in the barn, those ears laid flat down! And she was too stubborn and grouchy to even get a drink of water!😘 Just as Jim said, once she got in her "work mode" she and Baron did very well together it looked like! Brenda, I think that little kitty is just one that likes to "talk"! Two of my cats are so quiet you'd never know they were around. On the other hand, my third cat meows all the time, it's just his nature. Nothing's wrong, he just likes to "talk"! Can't tell you how much I think of sweet Buck. Every time I look at the February picture on my calendar, I see Buck and Ken at the cabin. I always thought them being solid black, they made such a beautiful team to do sleigh rides with the snow on the ground and tree branches. I'd say sweet Ken mourns for his friend and stablemate, Buck. It's sad, and they all feel a sense that it isn't the same right now. I hope next year's calendar will have a tribute to Buck with lots of full-size pictures of him!!!

concerned about the barn harmony. I assume that Baron needs to be in that stall. could a barrior of sorts be put in above the boards so that Lady can get water without Baron looking over the existing stall wall. or whatever you call it

The problem was largely the trough. Jim uses a water heater in the trough in the winter and these heaters can cause problems, They can develop faults which give the drinking animal an electric shock. And electrical issues can be intermittent which poses a whole new issue. Lady probably received a shock while drinking, she might also be sensitive to the electric field around the cables. Jim has noticed her reluctance to drink from the trough and Brenda now tends to remove the heater from the trough before the horses drink. I would be tempted to avoid the use of a direct element and sit the trough on warming pads.

It's simply remarkable the progress you have made with Baron. It appears he is going to be a suitable replacement for Buck. Of course their will only ever be one Buck and I'm sure he will be long remembered and you all with cherish those memories of him.

The best shows to watch all day and evening are one of the next three. Working with horses or one called Hidded Heights where they have herds of goats and 3 guard dogs

I just love y'all. It's Annette from East Texas.. We had an ice storm last week... It was... Well, it was not.. fun! I think Lady and Baron did phenomenally well together, I guess you could say they're officially hitched!! That was nice to see your horses grave yard and to remember the ones who've since passed on from your working farm before hand..I have one too! All my beloved horses..I still miss them, it's always a transition. Ciao

If you go back and watch the beginning part, you'll see that Lady lays her ears back flat on her head as she walked by Baron and while next to him at the water trough. Also, when Brenda is standing at her head at the truck body, she neighed her displeasure and flattened her ears back as Jim led Baron out of the barn towards her. That was the first time I ever heard a verbal noise from her. She definitely wasn't happy. 😂

Baron has beautiful face. He is coming along. Lady is cranky. Perhaps she needs to do more light work. It is coming along. Jim has a way with the horses. It is a big change for all.
