Great training day. I received my SP 140 on December 30th., Hang check and ground run up complete. I'm going to steel your ground training lessons before hooking up with my instructor. :)

Super!

This is fantastic. Most schools can't do much training with the hoop in place because it is too much weight for the students. Since the battery is the heaviest component, it is great to train without it. Perhaps you can come up with a training battery that is only a few ounces just to run the controller, and a simulator mode in the controller that doesn't send drive signal to ESC.

There is no need to add a dummy battery. The student can practice accelerating without the prop or the battery. The steps go as such: learning to PG first (P2 level - Novice rating). First day with morning at the shop to setup and fine-tune everything. Afternoon at the site with first inflations (forward and reversed) without the prop nor battery. Next comes the same routine with the battery not connected and without propeller to get the feel of having a toggle, a riser and a throttle in one hand. Next, the battery is connected (no propeller attached). The student practices reversed and forward inflations with the motor already armed or reversed only with the motor OFF before arming it when ready to turnaround or arm it if the wing is stable overhead after he turned around. Brushless motors accelerate very quickly and taking it easy with the throttle is the major hurdle for newbies.
The two students in the video have not yet experienced what torque feels like and the throttle is very sensitive. There will be firmware updates (Mac and PC compatible). The students even the heavy weight once will be in "CHILL" (max around 70% full power) to learn. The "SPORT" mode delivers full power and the torque effect is strong during the takeoff phase and in the air during a sudden acceleration if not used to the controller. There might be a "GAS" mode in the future for more linear "Easy Does It!" accelerations.

@@philsgreenice Sounds good. Don't forget to tell them about airspace and FAR103 rules that don't apply to the normal PG pilot. On an unrelated note, did you build the winch system you showed in a prior video? From some specific plans? I'm interested in building something similar.

@@JohnHansknecht They know about air spaces and FAR 103
Winch: It was a build between a friend who made the winch to specifics and I who built the rest of the MoonRover. I had built an electric winch before this one but it was very heavy. This model is 4 times lighter.
The winch itself was made by eWinch in FL.

Very nice...I have an e-bike, EV, and had been flying gas PPG's for 5-6 years with an Atom 80 but really want to go electric and get away from 2 stroke anxiety. How does the unit with the 1 hour battery feel on one's back for take off and landing? The SP 140 now is on version 2.0 and it really looks nice. Thanks for the video!

    • @philsgreenice

It is a bit heavy but if you are in good shape, have some experience with PPG, know your wing well and have a slight breeze then it is ok. The two machines in the video were the 1 hour batteries.

After a year, what have you learned? Would you recommend someone build or buy nowadays? I'm looking at paramotors and trying to decide.
