- Опубліковано 26 чер 2017
- Before Interscope, Jimmy was a rock producer and engineer for legends like John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen. So, the first time he really took a listen to hip-hop was when Suge Knight and Dr. Dre came to his office with The Chronic.

I think Suge was stupid for wanting Dre gone and having all the violence around the studio. If Suge had been able to keep the violence away from the artists and technicians and just anyone that actually had anything to do with the money making part of death row and kept all the gang bangers away from his company then death row would probably still be on top of the music industry.
allan fulton Suge was trying to do stuff other labels weren't doing at the time like hiring convicts who just got out of jail. But it was when he went to jail the management was shit from Reggie Wright. Most likely Death Row would have ended up like Bad Boy today not too great but still existent
allan fulton suge is a thug there is no logic to his thinking
FACTZZZZ!!!
suge aint no thug, he graduated from high school and went to college. aint no thug in the 80's doing that.
Kevin Dunbar Suge wasn't really a thug he just got caught up in the street shit because of hiring all the gangsters just getting out of jail.
Jimmy Iovine did what a record label owner should always do, stand back and let the artists just create and the label owner in turn back up there artists
I'm usually on the side of hip hop fans when they say fuck these "elite" types who run the industry behind the scenes but could get a damn about any part of it besides exploiting and robbing the culture, but NOT in this case. Any artist who ever worked w Jimmy Iovine has only sung his praises and for good reason. 2pac even continued to say nothing but good things about Jimmy after his release from prison. He has been 100% square w Dr. Dre his entire time with Interscope, has brought him along in a lot of great business investments when he didn't have to. He's also always supported Dr. Dre's creative vision, starting with Death Row records. You have to remember that it was damn near impossible for any major label to distribute a label started by an artist, let alone a RAP artist when 1.) Rap still was in its infancy as far as popularity goes 2.) Said artist has never had any real experience with the ins and outs of running a label. Without this support, label imprints such as Bad Boy, Roc-a-Fella, G-Unit, Aftermath and Young Money would have never existed. Not only was it a square deal, the support and later success of Death Row would change the landscape of MUSIC PERIOD forever! Also, he's supported Dr. Dre when supporting legendary artists who's careers would've been over otherwise. Some of the greatest music minds in history may have never been heard if it weren't for Jimmy. Eminem gave an interview where he stated he was freestyling on a radio show and was traveling around to shop his demo. He said if it hadn't of worked out that time he would've retired from rap, because nobody was willing to take a TRUE shot on a white boy from the trailer park who rapped about raping his bm and killing his mother. 50 was such a dangerous guy to touch after he was shot that he was essentially black balled from the entire industry, especially in NY. Dre and Iovine were the only two people willing to give him a shot. 2pac until his dying day had nothing but love for aftermath because they continued to show him love behind bars and heavily push his me against the world album. This was for an artist with a troubled history and a current RAPE charge, most labels at that time would've dropped him and shelved the album immediately. Say what you want about Lyor and the rest of those clowns, but Jimmy's resume speaks for itself. He's about as stand up and you will find in an industry full of devils.
That's well said. There's a lot of uniformed opinions in these comments. A lot of misguided anger.
You made some valid points here.
Well said. There are too many incorrect assumptions being made about Jimmy in these comments. Some guy keeps hurling insults about him being jewish. He's Catholic Italian lol.
Vaughn Viktor from Callaway county?
You are kinda forgetting that it was Em and Paul that brought 50 to Dre that's why he was the only artist ever signed to Shady/Aftermath
Jimmy Iovine is a pioneer. I see alot of hate, I'm black and I admire Iovine. He's a former rock producer, and a great music exec. But, he's a business at the end of the day. It is the music business.
R. Arana D.Keishawn fr.
R. Arana D.Keishawn Dame Dash said it once, but I'll reiterate it, not verbatim: "How come some of these white execs don't make it in their OWN world, but come over to Hip-Hop and become in charge/ in a position over others and profit!?" Sit on that for a bit.
And blacks don't come over to produce the rock world and make it in return?
there is No more rock world idiot
jimmy moonwalked all around that appropriation question LMAO
I know it's 6 six years later but I'm just seeing the whole interview. He didn't dance around it. That's crazy to say. When Sway tried to move away from the topic, Jimmy gave credit for the question and continued to talk about it. He just wisely spoke from his understanding and added context to the whole topic.
Omg when jimmy said he doesn't have social media bc he doesn't want to see how wonderful other ppls lives are just made my jaw drop. Lol the man probably has the most awesome life you could ever achieve.
He's very articulate in the sense that he re-asks them to explain themselves with questions that he deems to not understand what they mean.
These men aren't dumb.
Na, he's just buying time to rethink of his answers. He's a billionaire, you think he doesn't understand questions? 🤔
@@ez6810 most definitely. What do you mean appropriation ? Like Elvis copying off chuck berry? Jim, that was 50 something years ago. We're talking about today. These "ppl" own rap. Went from struggle and poverty to bring drugged-out and spending their millions on silly jewelry.
Ask him about when he offered Master P 1 million dollars for his catalogue and P laughed, went on and made a few hundred million, Ask him dat.
He's not hurting for master p's money. Chump change .
if he signed with him he couldve made a couple billion......like dre
@@jimbowill34 you're an idiot
The Boosie Clip james is riot
Jimmy Iovine understood the T.I comment. He pretended like he didn't understand, cause that comment was directed to him.
Hot Rod Magazine he didn’t understand because T.I was right in the message but wrong with the info.
Sway, I didn't miss it... thanks brauh! Skillful interview for those who really hear!!!
If dr. Dre is a billionaire then Jimmy Iovine must be a multi billionaire.
this isn't true. he's on the same pace as Dre and Diddy.
Yasiin if that's true he must have wasted a lot of money . Think of how much he did in the 70s and 80s before Dre and diddy where even working in the entertainment industry.
None of them are billionaires but Jimmy is really close. He's worth 950 million
allan fulton Thats common freaking sense bruh
bigjayking24 no actually beats was sold for over 3 bil.. do your research, then do your math
Jimmy contradicted himself. He says he didn't know about the violence at Death Row until he saw the Straight Out of Compton movie, but also says how crazy things got back then and that he tried to tell Suge to calm that down.
shinymetallicpurplearmor hell yeah
shinymetallicpurplearmor no he said he didnt know that there was violence in the actual studio, in the workplace.
He said Dre would tell him how bad it was and he wanted to get out immediately. He's not being truthful here.
shinymetallicpurplearmor - gay snitching dre
he should've answered it how it started to answer it in the beginning. There are your Pat Boone's and then you have your Beatles. The guys who straight rip off the culture and those who give it up and pay homage.
The richer you are the more homeless your clothes become
Marco Williams facts, eminem dresses like Jimmy😂 just take a look.
be nice i made the deal for your radio station 😂😂😂
Never heard Jimmy be so candid about his involvement in the hip hop movement. Let alone his passion for the black influence on pop culture current and the foundation for music in general.Basically was the springboard for the majority of influence of American culture, regardless of the color of the face represented.
He copped out of the T.I. question....
Jason Jamal Right! TI explained exactly what he meant to a tee and immediately after this mafucka ask what does he mean? He full of shit and he knows it.
I said the same thing. Talking about what does he mean? He knows exactly what T.I. meant. Artists are getting paid pennies from streaming services. They make way more money from radip airplay but that's if you have a hit song in the Top 40 and we all know the radio is biased. They're only gonna play what the elites tell them to play.
Yeah, it's not in his best interest to be truthful. Lol
he didn;'t cope out of it. i think he just didn't see the T.I. comment as being accurate. cause frankly it is a far more complex topic and you can't just blast Spotify or Apple Music for the status quo. what about UA-cam and music being for free? what about gatekeeping? what kind of shitty deal did Spotify had to submit to to even get in the US market? Jimmy knows all that shit hence his reaction. and dude, radio play is an alternative? go back to Kanye's rant last year.. c'mon.
Sway is such a good interviewer...and a well put together show, top down!
Great interview
Yall negative commentators tripping! If you owned a hip hop record company and Blake Shelton and Tim McCgraw came to you with an idea to start a label and asked for you to distribute, you would be like where's my cowboy boots and hat?
P Diddy finally someone with sense ,👍
P Diddy 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
For me, it's just feels like there are some lies coming out of his mouth. He definitely made a good business decision. Sway is asking him about his personal involvement and knowledge in situations and he's saying he was oblivious to everything. He is a businessman, no one is questioning that.
P Diddy 😂😂😂😂😂 true!!!
James Editor I'm sure he heard somethings which he alluded to but he didn't want to get directly involved in the violent side of things and I don't blame him.
Very insightful interview
Great Interview. Very Insightful
This interview is a gem
real interesting interview... cheers sway
Time for black folks to own Hip Hop. Go indie, Own the publications, the distribution companies, etc
bulletz gotti
I know. The problem with that also was those dudes were too tied to the streets and lacked the motivation and foresight to do it.
This guy is dodging the question regarding appropriation 🤔
Samplethief
Yes. Because a white man didn't teach DJ Kool Herc to breakdance, graffiti, MC, beatbox or DJ
jnr6lil FACTS BROTHA!
marc07112
Mfs need to be on that Suge Knight mentality without the street shit
yeah that speech at about 26:40 about fear sounds exactly like the monologue on the intro to Dr Dre's song called work on his last album end it's sounds just like him.
shout to sway and the team for not letting jimmy iovine off the hook on the cultural questions
Good questions Sway! Salute
He is evolved in the ending of Tupac.
Take notes everyone!! A Creative Legend 🙌🏾
yo salute to Jimmy for his contribution to music be it large or small I appreciate your labors homie good interview Sway
so sad to see how lost our generation is..
That's due to the type of the music, video games, & junk food that that was promoted. AND STILL IS...
Dre was Hatin on eazy e talking about he get ruled by Jerry the jew but look at him getting ran by Jimmy iovine
Sway's rly gotta get rid of that young chick. Asks the worst questions whenever she actually talks.
Give her a break, she will grow
I am glad sway and gang were cordial but still gave him relevant questions. I would have had to tell him some far more harsh words lol
jimmy shut that tracy g question down... damn
Jimmy definitely danced around that cultural appropriation question... Lol
you can tell Sway was tired of Jimmy not giving a straight answer, I was waiting for him to hit him with so black people saved your company in the v early 90's and made you billions, what are you doing now to give back to hip hop the art forms, the culture and the people?!
Aye Jimmy...."So this is the house that Death Row built..."
Papa g
I like when jimmy says you explain it to me....jimmy knows wtf there talking about but he wants to see what you know .....you go first ...I’m not showing my hand until you show yours ......and that’s why he is who he is
Jimmy seems like a cool dude to do business with
TIDAL has proven so far it is NOT viable....just saying. It is burning cash, can't keep a CEO and I literally don't know one person who uses TIDAL regularly and I work at a music related company.
Lmfoaoaoa is it 2023 yet?
Tupac I don't think cared about the money as much as he cared to be a revolutionary.
allan fulton and the art
Robert Thurman yes and the art.
Nah he cared about the money when he started owing a whole lot of people, and when he wasn’t getting paid,
He got into the music industry because of the reason you’ve mentioned, but he got into the Music business because of money,
4:21 why does his voice sounds like Trumps when he said "you know I got to be honest with you" lmao.
Not many know how big of a legend Jimmy is. He is responsible for most of your favourite pop artists.
Answered some questions like a politician
EPIC INTERVIEW! BUT SALUTE TO SWAY. THAT WAS DAMN GOOD QUESTION WHEN HE ASKED JIMMY "WHAT WAS INTERSCOPES COMMITMENT TO THE BLACK COMMUNITY?" JIMMY FESSED UP BUT SOLID QUESTIONS SWAY! #SALUTE #FLOWOFWISDOM
he dodge the technology question ...haha
Lol
inspiring.
What's with all these negative comments saying black people need to take back rap because it's their culture?? music is music! a white men invented the game of basketball. Should all the black people stop playing basketball or football?? SMH
I want mr. Ives to autograph my Mac Book Pro when I get one,how can I track him down???
Shrewd dude😈 he knows the real... but won't tell. #RIPBandanaP
Whats the documentary series he keeps mentioning called?
It's Business, Not Personal.
Cant Hate a Clever, Savvy Business Man with Vision.
Culture Vulture or Whatever, Nothing is stopping any individual from pursuing their Goals and Dreams.
hahahaha Jimmy did the Dre sample LIVE!!!!
The cultural appropriation segment when they broke it down sounded so juvenile like who cares if they mimic us allll artist does this black and white. They use different influences and styles that's popular.
Darius Olfus game is that u
much love much love.
Genius. Big ratings to Jimmy first important guy to listen to the Chronic and actually know what he was hearing. When most were hating he heard the talent. Him and Dre joining forces was only going to be success all the way to the bank.
Wow way to come on Sway In The Morning Jimmy Lovine The Only White guys who gave West Coast Hip-Hop a real Chance 👍🎧🎤🎼🌍💯
Torores Lee ...He raped hip hop and he need to be asked what does he know about Tupacs death..
Pittsfall @gmail.com Probably worked with Dre to end Death Row and PAC because he was going to unload a bunch of disses on Dre as seen in the 7 day theory
Fuck you, he killed Tupac Shakur
Ego killed pac and Suge played a huge part in it.
U black men are simps for the white Man
Streaming services don't make money, artists don't make money, labels complain about being shifted by streaming services, so where is all the money going? Tech execs? Record label cuts? Excluding artists intentionally...
3 deep questions were asked. His response each time was "What do you mean by that"
Jimmy was dropping jewels! 💯🔥🔥🔥 thanks Sway!!!
"Puff does great stuff"- Jimmy ivoine. ....lol.he helped destroy deathrow Jimmy. ..
Jimmy Is an IDOL!!!
he is a guy with a legacy!!!!
thanks for interviewing him!
When someone says I gotta be honest with you they are not honest loo
This is Sways bosses bosses boss
Damn, this is the most comments I've ever seen on Sways videos. I get why a lot of people don't like Jimmy, but he's not as bad as Clive Davis and Puff.
we have no control over people envy... thats how life work bro.. if u are sucessfull watch people surrounding you. it will always a snake.
Legendary guy right here. Shoutout to Sway for this one.
True hip hop
Y'all some dumb fucks. This man is racist as fuck. And you call legendary hr is a slave owner
Dre & jimmy are secret lovers
Why are you asking the white man to keep black men under control? Don't we have enough of that? Brothers control brothers. Not his job! You can't play it both ways. You want your own, control your own. Don't talk to that man like he should have been a disciplinarian. Ridiculous. Our responsibility. Not theres. Then you wonder why they look at us a certain way.
Thank you!!
Beyond ridiculous. Ppl think iovine was hanging out in death row or paying attention to rap beefs. He was running interscope, they needed a distribution deal he gave it to them and split the money 50/50 with death row.
The defiant ones was GREAT! Jimmy Iovine is beast ❤️
sway just hit a nice lick on some gems
from the moment he told sway to " be nice" the questions became half hearted and the questions got SWAYed
Jimmy is a great man, people need to understand hes not a racist and finds racial/cultural questions hard to answer . but when asking him about appropriation should of used flow and it not only white artist that do it dont know how many people have stolen Biggies flow on Notorious Thug.
he gives alot of insight to the industry of his era, but in the end its up to the artist to want to own their music 100% hard work and commitment and its possible.
real smart man much love jimmy
Damn, Jimmy Iovine got tripped up on the cultural appropriation question. I like that Sway and them kept pressing him.
8:17 Dr. Dre, Suge, Interscope
10:03 It's real funny to Jimmy 👮
10:43 Clive Davis, Congress
Dre and Suge fell out behind the Michelle. Good interview. We don't see or hear from jimmy. Peep game he said congressman spoke to him. That's government
That's crazy I had to search for this Vid
this man is a mentor
I love Jimmy Iovine
and which is one of the greatest songs by arosmith walk this way and when run dmc came on great remix it help there legacy rock and rap togeather incredible meaning it helped arosmith and it made run dmc stars so nuff said
I like y ha ha my evil laugh
I wish i could have jimmy as my manager.
Big difference between appreciating/emulating others' culture POSITIVELY and misrepresenting/exploiting it NEGATIVELY for profit.
#CulturalAppropriation especially with the case of Elvis Presley was having white performers copy and profit from Black music while the Black musicians themselves are denied the platform/opportunity to perform and make a living.
Nobody is trying to deny anybody to copy cultures and profit, the problem is NEGATIVELY MISREPRESENTING the people/principles of that culture.
Smart talk. Kid from Red hook,Ny.
Filmed from an iPhone?
this shows you exactly what i always say to people.People with wealth do not get involved in rich people problems and rich people dont get involved in poor people problems. he's dumbfounded to any of the bs these fools envolve themselves in..
He doesnt to put suge down but hes basically saying suge was his own worst enemy and ruined it for himself.
Exactly
Wish Sway would have asked him why when Interscope pulled their distribution deal from Jerry Davis's Poetic Group Records which had roster of conscience artist they replace them with Death Row who actually moved into the PGR offices the week that they moved out. Great interview though Sway.
T.i nail it jimmy said explain it to me haha 😄 t.i fact
Jimmy knows good PR...doing everything to make sure he didn't miss the black music issue. Basically he says its been happening forever. Michael jackson mentioned as always.. yay!
Sway didn't have to bring that shit up about Dee Barnes... Jimmy Iovine didn't have nothing to do with that.
Not going to lie, I respect this guy. But deep down I wish this was a black guy. A black person would never have such an important and lucrative role in country music or rock. We're the only ones who will allow people to exploit us and embrace them for it,
Birdman is a black culture vulture his not letting Wayne eat, Wayne is a legend that also took the game to another level.
💯
Rip lil Derrick
I fuck with jimmy he a good business man
What he needs to do is release that unedited tape of tupac at the mgm the night he got shot.
Don't get me wrong eminim is a great rapper but Dre knew what he was doing, in order to save aftermath get a white dude that can rap and stay far away from the artist in the ghetto. Now every top black producers works with white artists (black style) to make more money. Til this day eminim is the rapper that sold the most records.
"...need I remind you that Jimmy got 20 million on it"
dre gets way more credit then deserved. all his hits were heavy sampling of songs that were already hits. when he made his own stuff it was never very good. beats was pushed heavy by interscope, if it wasnt for interscope and monster, beats wouldnt exist. interscope supplied those headphones to every single major interscope artist to wear, and sent them to every radio station in sirius. on opie and anthony they broke them because of the shitty quality
this is a level a hate i hope to never get to. the amount of pleas youre copping here lol. you can put that same rhetoric to puff or jay or kanye or drake. EVERYONE gets help and uses samples when you are consistent.
@@stefanbrooks8661 hmmm. well the people they sampled werent sampling anyone else. i aint hating. i love yella and he samples. dre is just over rated. yella is def on dre's level but theyll never recognize him because they buried him with ruthless. dres good at getting that perfect mix though prob one of the best at that besides dj quik. does anyone wear beats now 5 yrs later?
He didnt get the question is because in reality all music is borrowed, sampled and inspired from someone or genre else where, hip hop itself is heavily sampled thru lots of genres. Its either the artist pay homage or not the blame should be on them individually. Deathrow was black owned and hiphop as a whole is recognized worldwide now and everyone knows where it came from n that will nvr be taken away. Part bout cashing in and owning ur own he did do the deal for Deathrow to own their own company, so either can think of him as opening the door because he was the only one who gave hiphop a chance and of course as business man reap the benefits too or call him culture vulture even tho there was no other company willing to give it a try nor owned by blacks before that. Im glad that whole era of music happened not the tragedies.
legend
