Thanks Qbert for showing mad love to the OLD SKOOL - Marley Marl and U.T.F.O. a lot of the younger DJ's sleep on the Founding Fathers of Hip-Hop. I am Soooooo glad that i was born in 1971 and came up with it all. If i was born 10, 20 years ago I would be PISSED!
DJ Qbert has an awesome philosophy on DJing and learning from the different forms of music and translating that to DJing. Also, massive BIGUP for the Marley Marl mention! People just don't know!
That Marley Marl song he was referring to was 'He Cuts So Fresh'. It was a track on the 'Uptown's Kickin' It' album compilation. Dropped in '87 I believe...
Listened to DJ Qbert for the first time the other day while stoned lol, really blew my mind away. Seams like he's got it down to some sort of science, its just unreal!
And he’s a solid person on top of the skill set. He’s such a good dude he flew across th country to play the bday party for one of his old school boys from the Rock Steady crew like a few years back. Dude is my perfect combination of knowledge and skills. Mad props.
Stopped counting at 30,000 records... lol...wow, qbert is such a cool guy, & wicked down to earth, great personality. This video was great man, really cool to see qberts collections, & see how the master lives, & how he gets down...... Respex, Big Upz, & Mad Love to the Skratch DJs..... 👍👊💪🙏😎🔥💯
Lots of LOL with this video! Q is the REAL DEAL!!! I've gotta cop one of those Psycho City hats......first time I ever saw Q was there when his band in the late 80's was shooting a video. I was blessed to be able to see him and the Skratch Picklez on and off over the years.....always an inspirational and mind blowing experience!!!
I heard wavestwisters really late at night I 1999on the radio .I was blown away .then I heard their was a movie to go along with it .I saw the world premiere at ucla.🤯
Qbert just dropped a Golden Nugget for every DJ to pick up on." ah this this stuff is really fresh!" was on a record by Fab Five Freddy that many DJ samples throughout history. he also mentioned Kraftwerk who played a major roll in the eighties hip hop era.
we got so many things in common. i ran out on a gig on acid ,laughing.i took a crazy christmas record to school.influenced by graff covers (same). marley marl, mixmaster ice,and i looked for every new scratch too,(morse code was ill). me and my friends scratched question and answers in in 1985-86.we quit though.
Think I was there too fam.Downtown right?A couple of times actually that year. One time Q and D-Styles did their set in their wavetwisters outfits because they were promoting Wave twisters the movie that was getting ready to drop at the time.Heavy set man.Killage!Peace/Blessings
stop it qbert! I had that pacman record when I was in 1st grade, I made a song where I sang over it for the background music for my science project in 2nd grade I went to the smart kids finals. holy shit. blah blah blah. Give Q-Bert a hug.
spotted the Casio RZ-1 ...which was my first drum machine.. used those 4 little sample pads to sample hits and made a couple of tracks using that machine. Loved the little Accent button too for adding a bit a real feel as they weren't touch sensitive pads. also noticed a little Zoom st224 sampler (poor mans SP1200) great for making gritty beats
My favorite beat record is thud rumble ultimate breaks pt 2. I’m wearing my 20 yr old Mixwell hoodie as we speak. Got 4 QBert logo tats on my shoulders too.
Yo q bert m8, I love vinyl, found Electros, Funk doobiest, ice T, ice cube, Run dmc, and dream of santa anna all at charity shops around the UK , unreal bud, been scratching them today was laughing bud when I mixed egypt egypt with Tour de France by Kraftwerk, they match up nice same ooh ahhh samples . classic 80s in mint condition on vinyl. Love your style m8. and your collection, I only have 4000 records m8 and now theyre worth a bomb.I have citronic pd45s bud same motors as 1210 marks 5s with original stantons, seen a technics dmc mixer for 70quid the other day , gonna have to get one marra.
my uncle owned a record store back in the eighties. I used to spend all of my time there after school playing records. there was this one record called the black hole which was also a movie that had some great sound effect on it. this is pre Star Trek and Star Wars great memories
+Hoodie Man the name of the movie It's called THE BLACK HOLE the movie came out in 1979 with a sound effect soundtrack to it. it had a lot of great sci-fi and futuristic sound effects to it. little did they know the future would be quiet. but if it's just sound effects you're looking for there are plenty of sound effects CDs on the market today. just search sound effect. I hope this help you in your quest.
I’ve pulled over 10 library records outta thrift stores over the years. KPM, DeWolfe, a Canadian company the name escapes me.. lots of dope shit. Just gotta know when the new batch of records hits the floor and have patience.
04:03 Shout out to PBS/KQED Channel 9. Legit some of the illest stuff to a kid who didn't have cable. You'd see everything from Sesame Street, to a full symphony performance, to Dr. Who or a Huey Newton documentary...
The Marley Marl track that Qbert mentioned is "He Cuts So Fresh" by Marley Marl, which as far as I know is only a single, and not on any of Marley's albums.
I really love the idea of finding an old vinyl that no one wants, the dregs of the dollar bin and finding a little piece of it, making it into something new and beautiful.
Saw Qbert from the front row in 98. He looked exactly the same as in this video so how come I don't still look the same as well. Fucking cheat codes, man
@11:35 just a quick FYI The track Q is referring to IS by Marley Marl but it is not on that album. It's called Marley Marl Scratch (Feat. MC SHAN) (1985 NIA Recs.) If you are a true turntablist and you HAVE the Dirt Style BATTLE BREAKS, you will hear the classic samples...."break it down", "can we hear your funky fresh scratchin' again" etc. ps.....Waddup Q' , been a while my man, holla at cha boy! JC/ SOUNDQUEST ENT.
No they shouldn't. They only interview famous people in which half of them lie. I know people that will smoke these wack collections. Gene Ammons isn't a library either
He's a a great character. He's a legend and an icon but he still considers himself a student. That's dope!
Thudrumble humble
Makes a nice change to see someone not being over the top into themselves, even tho Q has earned a bit of cockyness, if he so desired!
The love for music keeps him young.

Thats Ninjaman, A late 90's Jamaican Dancehall Dj (Jamaican for rapper) and next to that record Qbert pulled out was "The Very Best of Eek-A-Mouse"

I think record collectors are good for the environment as they keep a lot of vinyl that would normally end up in landfills.
Music Power most of the vinyl I buy, cost me a shit load. I always see so many crap records in the dollar bins or thrift stores.
