Played at my brother Sam,s funeral last week, waterworks for many days later. So beautiful, thank you to his favourite band the Whistling Donkeys.
Love the way they respect the Furies song by not changing the arrangement but simply updating it. That's class 🎀
This is their own version, and far better than the Furies version...
We played this song today at my mum’s funeral. Goodbye beautiful mum ❤️
❤❤
That banjo, just WOW.
As a big fan of Finbar I salute Fergal’s version of this classic song.
His voice is amazing and heartfelt,
Great band too.
Much older than the Fureys. Written by James Thornton and first published in 1898. First hit the charts at #3 in 1901, sung by Harry Macdonough.
Thank you, I didn't know they had charts back then....
@@sherp2u1 Yes, for sheet music, rather than recordings at that point.

A beautiful rendition of a fureys classic amazing vocals and banjo, and the young ladys smile is truly heaven sent , no make up just natural innocent beauty....heart melting .
Saw the Furey's singing this live in 1981 in Cobh when I was 19...takes me right back 😊

One of the finest odes to love lost that I have ever heard...
Beautiful, faithful rendition of the Furey's version. I had the privilege to hear Finbar play this with banjo and accompanied by guitar. One of those music memories that will stay with me forever as it's been a favourite of mine for over 30 years.

we gottta you lads over to Canada.....Newfoundland and Nova Scotia have great celtic and folk music scene....my husband loves you guys
My boyfriend and I are from Quebec, and we both have a huge Irish and Scottish ancestry history. No, not just stories but dna proved also! :) Anyways, what are the odds we got together with the same background in a sea of french people right? We just want to visit Newfoundland and Nova Scotia so bad. I would love to hang out in a pub and listen to your local bands. xx
The Fureys must be pleased that their legacy lives on. A very fine voice, accompanied by fine musicians - what's not to like? Thanks.
The Fureys version was a cover...! The song was written in 1898, and first recorded in 1900!
One of my favourite Irish songs very well sung and played, thanks for posting it
It's not Irish.
@@hetrodoxlysonov-wh9oo The composer was James Thornton he was of Irish American descent and I would suggest to you that their is more Irish in his composition than American!! The jury is out on his place of birth Dublin/ Liverpool!!
@@charlesduguid4811 Thornton, that's a very English name, the style is that of turn of the century British and American ballads just like the song 'Danny Boy' written by an Englishman in England.
@@hetrodoxlysonov-wh9oo Sorry!! Danny boy was written by Johnnie Cash . Thornton was born possibly in Liverpool which to this day has a large population of Irish decent.
Can you give me a correct version of a " British" / American ballad?
@@charlesduguid4811 Danny boy written by Johnny Cash, ha, ha, ha, look it up, of the top of my head ' Sam Hall' 'Barbara Allen', most of the ballads written in Britain were also popular in America.
Absolutely brilliant ,,,,,finbar would be proud they are doing this old classic well
What more could anyone want? A beautiful song and a beautiful girl.
A beautiful man! 🤔 ( Irish please! )
@@Lee-nh5bb I'm Irish and single but at 70 my courting days are behind me.
The memory of my love song it to me on my wedding day and yes I was indeed sweet 16 he was 19
@@johnnymac8680 Now that's a shame! Never say never!

Peace, Love, and Happiness from Black Mtn. N.C. USA ... this made my heart warm, and my eyes ... watery! Thank you for you music.
What a beautiful song brings a tear to my eye every-time..
Excellent...and what a very pretty lass!
She can have my children any time she's gorgeous 😃
It some times seems that everyone in Ireland is either a great musician or a great singer ! Love the banjo here
Wish we were better fighters, but I'll take better singers and writers. At least the pen and the song do its own magic.
Or a poet!
I have the version by Davy Arthur and the Fureys from years n years ago this is so close. Excellent. 👌👌
Beautiful, gets me every time 😓❣
I met my girlfriend when she was sixteen I was 18 , I moved away for 12 years came back and found her again this song reminds me of her
A beautiful song done by the Mills Brothers so long ago and done so well here.
The whole thing is beautiful. Well done you Paddy’s. From a Welsh singer.
Great music and a very pretty girl...
Amazing song.
Absolutely genial! Vocal and instrumental alike! I will start planning a visit to Ireland, the country of genial music!
Lovely voice ❤
Pure talent
Wonderful version. It's rare to hear a cover that's better than the original!
No it's not. It sounds almost the same.
The Fureys version was a cover...! The song was written in 1898, and first recorded in 1900!
love it !!!! greetings from Hoogeveen The Netherlands :)
She is the ideal example of what we think of as an Irish Lassie
Or a Scots as it's one of those shared songs
The Fureys version was a cover...! The song was written in 1898, and first recorded in 1900!
This is a wonderful cover of the Furey's song , I will watch this often as I do with Finbar Furey and his band.
It is not a Fureys song. It was written by James Thornton , an American in 1898
Bob W Al Jolson sang it years ago
@@mickoleary7488 actually he was born in either Dublin or Liverpool, no one is sure, he emigrated with his family in 1869 and became an American citizen in 1931
If l close my eyes l can only hear the FURYS . So this is Beautiful. ,!,!,
Brilliant love that song and you sing it amazing just like the fury’s .

Beautiful.
soo beautiful thank you
Finbar Furey, would be very proud, of this great performance. Ireland is awesome.
He most definitely would
gerard mcveigh I always thought Scotland and her people, and the Irish, and Ireland, north and south are as good as it can get. Flawed yes, some massive conundrums, but thats life.Gaelic/Celtic culture is so influential world. Now I'm old and hopes for future can crumble. I want to say, Edinbugh's a dump, with a union flag topping the castle, but I dont want to hurt their feeling. Money and its culture, rule things now, always did, chuck in the MSM. The world. Thanks for you comment. Finbar Furey, Dougie Mclean, Robbie Burns still a great way to pass the time. I used to think Edinburgh was beautiful and as Scotlands capital more than a pile of bricks, seems I'm wrong.
gerard mcveigh I sadly, share your fears. My mum was Irish as were her parents. That makes me half Irish, half Scot that way round, even though I was born in Scotland. The Irish are a huge powerful diaspora, the true Irish are formidable and certainly not defeated yet. Though time and tide, may not be on Irelands side at the moment time and tide can turn. The internationalists have not won. Not yet
gerard mcveigh Dundee kettle boiler by birth and paternal descent. Mother from West Tyrone, her dad from Donegal.
Nice version sweet sixteen by whistlin donkeys.
Finbar furey would love this cover 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Best cover of the Furey's ever. well done.
The Fureys version was a cover...! The song was written in 1898, and first recorded in 1900!
Great cover, quality.
This was written by James Thornton 1898 and still very popular today
Is right, James. But so many people think it is a Fureys original!
I was waiting for her to sing😏
Who is the young lady in the video. My god she is beautiful
I'm against the whole idea of God and Oh my Gosh she looks like hard work and not a drop of kindness in her eyes. Isn't it amazing how beauty is certainly in the mind of the beholder.
Merry Christmas ☘️💚🦄💚☘️
Perv
She’s a beautiful girl
Remeber my dad playin the furys version but i really like this really good job
The absolute best version of this song I’ve heard.
Great version but nothing can beat finbar furey with this song, just saying
Finbar Furey owns this tune, good version but
Fantastic voice

That may be better than the fureys
That's hard to imagine but that's a brilliant version
