Hi, Trader Joe's is a fun place to buy plants, because you never know what they will have. But I've noticed the same thing about the soil. It is pretty compacted.

Just brought home an beautiful Monstera philodendron for $12.99. One thing I would like to add is that Trader Joe plants are usually in excellent condition. Other places that sell house plants tend to over or under water them and they die a few weeks after purchase. I always repot house plants into pots with good drainage because most plants die from overwatering or being in a pot with inadequate drainage. Better to slightly underwater than too much water which rots the roots. I bought a TJ plant for $5.99 and everywhere online a smaller version was selling for $45, so the price is unbeatable.

Thanks for this! I noticed with all of the TJs plants I’ve gotten (3 out of 4) the soil is so dense and spongy that I can’t even break it up to remove the soil in order to repot. I tried drying out the soil as much as possible but still have that issue. Any tips? Also is you made a video for your soil mix blend could you link it

The soil is awful. Holds way too much moisture

Great video👍🏻. It is the same thing with plants from Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Great video! Is it bad to repot back into the nursery pot? I get trader joes plants and usually keep them in their original pot but then they end up dying. I don't have terracotta so I was wondering if I can do the same thing as you and just repot back into plastic?

Thank you! Great question! I personally prefer to do just that - repot right back into the same plastic nursery pot! My preference is plastic over terra cotta, I just can’t get the watering schedule correct when I plant in terra cotta. I also like just placing the plastic nursery pots with plants in them inside decorative pots, rather than repotting into the decorative pot! 💚🌱
