    Having Gordon, who is nothing if not a monster of pure ego, bow down and decide to swallow all his pride in the face of pure talent, is to me the purest form of victory Midge could have.

      Reid Scott played that role perfectly, with just the right amounts of affable charm, pompous egomania and finally warm acceptance -- and he gets to be the one to say the name of the show at the end. The entire cast of this show was amazing.

And even on this night, her mother couldn't believe that Midge wanted her there until the phone was put back on the hook and it couldn't stop ringing letting her know Midge was on and wanted her parents but especially her mom, there. It was nice that even though Rose's matchmaking services would later tank, Midge still believed in her and wanted to make her happy.

    You know what touched me the most in the finale: not only her fantastic act, not only Gordon's or writer's respect, and even Susie's totally astonished and amazed look. Its the fact that all Midge's family came, laughed, and were truly proud of her. Since season one, we saw that her family wasn't on board with her job as a stand-up comedian. Even Joel in the beginning (its later he became her biggest supporter - with Susie). But here, when her parents rushed through traffic, asking every taxi to take them to the show - was truly touching (shame that Moise couldn't make it). Her friends were there too. And Joel, telling Midge to joke about him.
    Truly beautiful, amazing, Marvelous show!

She wasn't going to wait several more years for a break and she realized she would NEVER get a break like the one staring her in the face. That's why she said what she said in her routine. He was never going to let her on to keep the Rule going (which wasn't his rule, but for some reason.. HE was the exception to that rule!!) and would only break it if Midge would sleep with him. She consistently told him NO because she knew that if she would get on the show, it would be because she slept with him and did NOT want that as part of her resume. I can understand that big moment of fear, especially with all the lights and cameras and audience. This is not the Gaslight. That could have easily gone very wrong. This last season for me was a proof that SHE KNEW. SHE KNEW all along that her kids would hate her. She knew all along what it costs for her to achieve her dream. But she was brave to go for it. She was brave to stand in front of everyone who opposed her from day one and say This is what She is. Infront of everyone who did not understand her and say This is what it is. Proving herself time and again.
    But, all this did not change her nature one bit. She was the same self. She dint have to change her hairstyle, her dressing style, her sense of what is good and bad. She never hesitated to say Sorry. She never was rude nor was she overly timid. Heck, she didn't sleep with anyone as shown in every other similar story.
    She just got it with what she has.. knowing very well what it costs..

    • @gheller2261
      @gheller2261 10 місяців тому +17

      Yep. The device of not remembering her kids' names foreshadows what that relationship had been and how it would be. She knows that being a mother was never teally for her even though she did as expected and she knew that her personal ambition necessarily meant that it would come at the expense of having a normal relationship with her kids. I don't love the Palladino style very much, but this aspect of the character was done well.

    • @Adultwomanlol
      @Adultwomanlol 5 місяців тому +4

      @@gheller2261 from her perspective, well done, but her poor children didn't deserve the neglect. As someone raised in a house with a strong mother who basked in success and appreciation while I remained that fly in the wall, therapies won't heal the likes of us. I don't like how they glorify her parenting style in this show and it worries me how many women would put this on a pedestal to "follow their dreams" at the cost of their children's mental well being. You brought a child into this world, you sure as hell are responsible for taking care of it.

    • @gmh471
      @gmh471 5 місяців тому +9

      @@Adultwomanlol I don't think the program glorified her parenting style at all. If anything, it demonstrates that she is a person who probably was not suited to be a mother, certainly not in the traditional sense, but she was caught in the social morays of the time. Except she is portrayed as the rare woman of her era who decided that she wanted and needed more out of her life and had the strength to go after it. Otherwise, there would be no show for us to watch. Unfortunately, for Midge and her kids, the parenting part of her life had to suffer if she was going to be a success as an entertainer. There was no touchy feely "being a mother is my greatest joy" that we now see from celebrities when they sit next to the Jimmys, Colbert or Oprah. And I think in the portrayal of her kids as adults, we see the collateral damage that her "selfishness" (necessary as it was) caused her children. But, big but, at some point we all have to get past the damage our parents caused us (assuming that there was no physical, sexual or serious emotional abuse). Midge was not abusive to her kids, she was indifferent.

    I recently finished this show. Was going through quite a major depression. This scene, this single snippet of this wonderful show is one of the triggers that helped me feel again and fight for a "Big life" One like Midge is talking about. It's making me want to fight to get back into acting. Claw my way back out of the darkness. So thank you Maisel, for all that you've given to this world.

    One of the hardest things about a great series is trying to create an ending that lives up to the show's greatness. I've found myself coming back and watching this clip a few times, and mulling the last season in general and there are a few things I've realized: 1) I love that they didn't try to create some pollyanna-type future where Midge manages to have all the fame with none of the drawbacks - instead, she's a multiple time divorcee workaholic with rocky relationships with her kids but she's also achieved greatness in her field; 2) I love that they didn't do some patronizing HEA with Joel or some last minute love interest to placate the many folk who think you can't be happy without a partner; and 3) I love that ALL the characters (Abe, Rose, Susie, etc) got serious character development - nobody remained static or, even worse, degenerated into a shallower version of their earlier character who remained solely for the purposes of shuffling the plot along: they all grew and matured as people. I loved this ending, and I love reading all the comments from others who loved it. This show deserves all the Emmys!

    This show is not a stand up comedy genre per se, as It didn't make me laugh for the standup comedy bits as such, but, not to say the absolute hilarious moments that came in between now and then were worth it. It was more of a situational comedy, and the little world that this series developed, with all character development, and family comedies, warmth and friendships, everything about this show was very warm, cozy and funny. Susie, and Abe weisman were underrated. Moishe and shirley were hilarious, Rose was sophisticatedly funny. We get moments of love, bonding, realisations in the last scene very often. Precious moments of family and love. This season felt natural. Purely loved the dynamics, and character development, Gold comedy.
    Thankyou for giving me some of the best laughs of all time and some sobby moments too! And finally, this show wraps up beautifully by introducing me to this gem- " I stayed too long at the fair?" by Barbra Streisand. At the end, all they had, is thier friendship. Everything changed, but they, sat smiling and laughing, across different continents and enjoyed watching a show together, on a lazy day/night, that, is life, and friendship. Life is all about the little moments, and after making her life "big", maisel smiles and laughs together with susie, both of them who did that, who didn't wait for the door to open itself to lead them to another life, and now, after everything accomplished, The series ends with this song! Amazing. Beautiful.
    EDIT: for that one person who read this long comment of mine (and liked it), thankyou.:) you read this latenight 3 a.m bad grammar comment. and liked it too!!

    God, I am speechless. I have loved this show from the very beginning, and it got me a little nervous in season 4, not because it wasn't entertaining, but because I was worried we weren't sure exactly where we were going.
    My word how this season completely turned it around. I for one, was absolutely in love with all the flashforwards (especially Suzie's roast). It made Midge feel unbelievably real and it almost became like a biopic, waiting to see the moment that they made it, that you knew they had made it.
    This was it, and the fact that she took it for herself, on her terms, risked it all because she knew she had what it took to wow everyone in that room. And my god it was one of her best sets. Hilarious and heartfelt at the same time and utterly triumphant in a way only this show can do.
    One last thing before I let you go. I have been waiting the entire series for someone to call her The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and let me tell ya, I wept tears of unabashed joy when Gordon said it to the crowd. I'm gonna miss this show so much, but I couldn't be happier to see it end in such a perfect note.
