This movie broke my heart in so many ways, but this scene has stayed with me longer than any of the others. The bungled and the botched.
Jack has a gift for the human mind. In a different life he could have been a gifted psychiatrist or psychologist, he has an insight into people's thoughts and emotions the same way an artist has an insight into colors, light, and shadow. Not only did he know what buttons to push with his callers, but he knew what his audience wanted to hear. But instead of using it to help people, he used his gifts to hurt them for the entertainment of others and to make money for himself. But when it came crashing down, when he misjudged a single person, just once, that voice he used to humiliate and torment his callers found a new target, himself. Imagine having Howard Stern inside your head, going over your failings in different creative ways, every hour of every day of every year. They say depression is anger turned inwards, and I don't think there is any movie that better represents that than this one.
Really insightful. My number one movie of all time, love all the metaphors and symbolisms in it :-)
I remember this in the theaters. In just one scene, Jeff Bridges did such a great job of making our hearts break for this guy we despised at the beginning of the movie. So full of misery we can't help but be on his side from then on.
I projected this in a theater first night, and watched from the back then a dozen more times over two weeks. I've seen it a hundred times and just noticed he says 'picnico' to Pinocchio--brilliant, now I have to watch again.
"Ever read any Nietzsche?" lol, gotta love this scene... "Madness!"
"You're good kid. You say no to drugs" tragically amusing.
Everybody gives Williams a ton of praise for his performance, but Bridges never seemed to get enough credit for his performance. At least that's how I view it.
Having said that, it's nice to see a lot of YT comments praise JB's performance now.
the whole point is that he starts off at the top- even in a high rise, rising to power...then has a freak accident, or caused a freak accident by his selfish remarks, & sinks into the depths of despair...& meets a helpless person, who is crazy & homeless because of his, (Jack's) selfish remarks...then finds a way to help that person & is redeemed. It's very spiritual, about heaven & hell.
Not his fault though, because of the sjws being all sentimental on free speech.
@@LentaChorum Uh, private companies don’t care about “free speech”
@@jonnybirchyboy1560 that’s why I fucking hate Twitter and cancel culture, everyone’s guilty no by can’t prove themselves anymore. Jack was speaking his mind which somehow caused a deranged looney on a murder spree.
Terry Gilliam, a master!
Richard LaGravenese is the genius.
I can't believe this movie's almost 30 years old.
Walt Disney and Hitler. Amazing reference
Jack was a victim of cancel culture 30 years early.
Maniacs should always be canceled. Otherwise no healing like Jack proved.
@@stell4you and not the maniac who killed people at the bar?
@@LentaChorum both are/were maniacs
"It was no f'ing picnic: the Jack Lucas Story.. IL novo esta f'kin picnico. " this scene has stuck with me since I first saw it in the theater. Brilliant movie.
Jack has an incredible heart. He couldn't live with the feeling that he caused someone's death...and then he met Perry.
Mr. Bum...lol One of my favourite movies.

Wallowing in failure, recognizing that mediocrity is praised. Bungled and the botched indeed. Gilliam got it.
FORGIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE MEEEEEE, JAJAJAJAJA that´s hilarious
Reminds me of "Well, EXCUUUUUUUUUUSE Me, Princess!" from The Legend of Zelda.
The Prime Acting Decade of Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges. Two of my Top emotional actors. The Fisher King is a holy gem. 3:34

Damn Jeff looks like Gary Oldman here.
Hi there. Anyone knows what the background music is in this scene? Thank you.
God, Nietzsche was right, I’m definitely not in the greatness category
Greatness has many definitions. Actually, that's maybe even one of the thing's his character figures out later in the film.
If you are going to maintain an existence of lying to yourself, and then you want to justify it all by describing Nietzsche, tell it to Pinocchio. Awesome.
