If I were just now "learn(ing) to love to run", I'd get these... because if I THEN decided I only wanted to hike around the trails from time to time, they'd be the perfect choice. A natural step, excellent functionality, great looks, and I wouldn't mind the price premium over my Superiors since they'd last forever, by comparison. But since I do love to run - and especially because I'm trying to run faster - you couldn't PRY me outta them Superiors.
How do the Topo Athletic MTN racers compare to the Altra 2.0? That space between the tread in the heel is a sweet spot for rocks and even a small rocks smarts. Thanks for the in depth video!
I hate the Timp2.0. Never had blister issues in the past but these shoes gave me a blister in the toe area after a 5 mile run. I've put about 50 miles in them and could never break them in. After 3 miles the only thing I could think about was taking the shoes off. THe shoes does seem to be a better quality but the fit has changed so much from 1.5 and It was not for me way too tight and snug. I hope the Olympus 5 has a better ride.
Sorry about that, Cam! We have high hopes for the new Olympus - we expected to be favoring it over the Timp 2.0 when we saw the samples, but as we said we were pleasantly surprised in our use. We're bummed you didn't feel the same!
The weight of a size 9 shoe "doesn't make a lick of difference", but adding 2.1oz for a size 13 shoe means it does matter? Not sure I get why that 2.1oz makes so much of a difference for the size-13 wearer. Or conversely, why 9.9oz wouldn't make a difference to a size 9 wearer - vs say a shoe that is 2.1oz lighter than that (like a Merrell Trail Glove, for instance). I have a feeling the Timp 2.0 are going to be my next trail shoe, either way. Thanks for the thorough review.
We either mis-spoke or you mis-heard. Sorry, Nicholas. The point is that there is a general train of thought that if a shoe is "less than 10oz", it's a light shoe, but that's based on an industry standard of men's size 9 shoes...so it doesn't apply to Nathan. In a size 13, it's VERY rare to have a shoe weigh less than 10oz, so we need to adjust our scale somewhat. Every other review we've seen regurgitates the posted weight or reviews pre-production shoes (everyone but Altra makes these in a men's 9, Altra chooses to make men's 10.5 because that's their founder's foot size). We review Nathan's size. So to him, the published weight doesn't make a lick of difference - it is literally NEVER the weight of the shoes he puts on his feet. PS: The Merrell Trail Glove may be less than 10oz in a men's 13. THAT'S a light shoe! :)
The Timp 2.0 was on the top of my shoe wish list, but watching this and reading the comments I got a little hesitant. I usually buy the previous versions of shoes when they go on sale, so I recently bought the Superior 4.0, and almost returned it as it was so tight it hurt my foot at first in the area you point out the Timp 2.0 were real tight, luckily it loosened up pretty soon and now is just nice and snug. Also recently bought the Torin 4.0 (non-plush), I was afraid it was gonna be too tight when first trying them on, but they are just about perfect and snug without being cramped. The Torin 4.0 is hands down the favorite shoe I have run in thus far! If I understand correctly the Timp 2.0 are quite a bit tighter then these, and that's not likely to work out for me. For once I know of a shoe store not too far away that has these, guess I have to try them on to see if they need to be dethroned from the top of my wish list.
@@TerronFil I tried them on in the store, I compared them with the Olympus 4. The Olympus felt like home to my feet immediately, the Timps were tight, but not uncomfortable just trying them on like that. If they stretch a little as they break in they might get awesome, if not they might get uncomfortable after some time on the feet. I ended up taking the Olympus home as I was really looking for something different from my Superiors to switch the load up a little on my feet. The Olympus was very different, the Timps felt a lot like the Superiors, only more cushion. I would really like to give the Timps a go sometime if funds permit, because if they work for me they would be a real workhorse of a shoe.
@@thedolenorway thanks! It seems that to get the proper fit in the Timp 2.0 you would need to go for a half number up than your normal running shoes.. I guess you took your right running number in the Olympus but do you think you would need to go this half number up in the Timp 2?
@@TerronFil I took my normal size in the Olympus, and if I remember correctly I didn't try the Timps in half a size up. I'm not sure I would like the extra length, as my midfoot is already quite short it would put the flare out for the toes further forward on my foot and possibly make them feel tighter where I could use some more space. I guess the position of tight spots is very individual, for me it is in the midfoot to forefoot transition
@@thedolenorway that's correct, a half size up could be even more tight in the middle foot and not a correct fit of the foot in the shoe. I'll think about that.. even about the Olympus. Thanks
Hahaha. Well, they certainly wavered, Andrew. But to be fair, 2mm is a FAR cry from the 12-16mm drop of shoes generally on the market when Altra was born.. :) !
Thanks for the review. I do short Trail runs and long hikes in shoes and I liked the Timp 1.5 quite a bit so was really looking forward to the 2.0 but could barely even get my foot in these. This shoe is completely different than the 1.5. I wish I could still find the 1.5 on line somewhere but where a popular size.. These will not fit anyone who needs a wider toe box or if the top of your foot is high. Tried replacing the insole, getting longer shoe strings so I could loosen them a lot. Still gave me pain and rubbed my little toe raw. Any suggestions on which shoe I should switch to next.
I'm really torn between the Timp 2 and the Olympus 4. I'm running my first trail 50k and would love an opinion comparing those two shoes. I'm primarily a road runner, but have been spending a ton of time on mountain trails since Covid shut most things down. I generally run in areas with tons of roots and rocks but primarily am looking for the best option for my 50k and possibly beyond!! Thank you!!
Good Job! Is the heel part as soft as a Torin 3.5 or is it harder with some extra reinforcement around the heel? I would suggest to work more with your hands on the shoes during the review to give some more resistance feeling of the upper in its different parts. thank you
I've never ran or owned a pair of altras, but these have been peaking my interest. My question is....I'm consistently running in 5mm drop shoes, so would I be okay running in these right away or would I need to be transitioning to the 0-2mm drop? Just trying to be smart here because I'm about 1 month into a training block.
Well, Always...it IS a different drop, but not much...especially in a trail shoe. We notice that difference a lot more on the road, where the impact causes us to use the full shoe in exactly the same manner every strike...on the trail the varied terrain makes the difference in drop a lot less noticeable since you're hitting the ground differently every time. We always thing its smart to test something and measure the differences, but we bet with this much cushion you'd likely not notice a huge difference.
Hartono Tai, same thing for me! Big issue with the fit.. My feet don’t feel great in these shoes espacially in the mid section... I have to return my order...
@@stephanegirard7632 We're sorry to hear that, but we were concerned some folks would not adjust to that snug area the way we did. Good luck in your efforts to find something else!
@@plain-bagel We agree, but maybe slightly more so on the Timp 1.5. The Torin is SOOO accommodating right now (the 4 specifically, the Plush feels a bit different). Both the 1.5 and 2.0 have more cushion and less flex, though...in those areas the Lone Peak is closer, but we'd tend to favor the Timp for Torin users anyway. :)
Another EXCELLENT review from Nathan!
Thanks, Troels. You're very kind!
Now thats a review!!! Thanks man

Top review and a haircut.

We get it...they're definitely very different.
Looks like the new fit is a potential problem, but presumably replacing the insert to a thinner one would solve the low toebox issue 🤷♂️
It IS a particularly thick insole!
Had that low toe room problem with Nike Wildhorse as well but that was solved after a while when insole compressed and upper mtrl softened
Awesome review, super informative, helped out a ton!

Think they are more people complaining about the tighter narrow fit that makes me stay away from them. The Cushion does sound good though.
Fair. It didn't end up being an issue for us after wearing them for a while, but we get it!

Why do you change what isn’t broken.
People prfrer the 1.5. The new model lacks toe room.
Altra will become perfect the day they use Vibram...
They use Vibram on both the Olympus and King MT.
THe max trac rubber is pretty bad. Wears out quick.

True to size?
If u have narrow feet probably but size up if u have a more wide foot at the front

Why confuse things by calling a shoe with a 2mm drop a zero drop shoe?? If its 2mm drop, its a 2mm drop! It confuses the standard. Just saying.
