Top Dog Facts About the RAT TERRIER
Despite its name, the American Rat Terrier was originated in England in the 1820s, as a result of the crossing of the Smooth-haired Fox Terrier with the Manchester Terrier. Due to his ability to hunt and exterminate rodents, he was brought to the United States by English immigrants in the 1890s, where he continued his work of destroying rats. There, the Rat Terriers crossed with other races, such as the whippet, the Italian hound, the beagle, the chihuahua and the fox terrier. Over the years, they became guard dogs and faithful and loyal companions.

Compact, athletic and very muscular, the Rat Terrier Dogs exist in three sizes, the standard size which weighs 12 to 35 pounds and height 14 to 23 inches; the mid size which weighs 6 to 8 pounds and measures 8 to 14 inches; and finally the toy which weighs 4 to 6 pounds and is 8 inches or 20 cm in height. It has powerful legs, a solid neck, powerful shoulders, a deep chest, small head, large ears and dark eyes. Grooming: The coat of the Rat Terrier is quite easy to maintain. A weekly brushing is enough to keep it healthy and free of tangles. Cleaning the ears, brushing the teeth and cutting the nails regularly helps prevent future diseases. Also, due to its coat, only needs to bath once in six months. If you bathe too often, it can cause skin problems.
Temperament: Sensitive to changes in environment, mood swings, unexpected noises and strange people, the Rat Terrier is an excellent pet that adapts well to family life. He’s a loving, balanced, independent, calm, intelligent and an ideal companion for those who enjoy an active dog full of energy.
Training: The training of a Rat Terrier isn’t for the weak of character. These puppies are one of the most obstinate breeds, and have almost no desire to please. The training sessions should be as short and interesting as possible, with fun activities if you want to keep him interested. Even if they’re one of the quieter terrier breeds, they require exercise, daily walks and much companionship as a way to strengthen the relationship with their human family. Get some basic obedience training tips here in BrooklynsCorner.com
Health: Known as one of the longest and healthiest breeds, the Rat Terrier has an average life between 13 to 16 years. They’re dogs that don’t need special care beyond the usual, however, this pet may suffer from allergies, elbow and hip dysplasia, malocclusion, demodicosis, patellar dislocation, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and heart and eye disorders.
Life with a Rat Terrier will never be boring. Being Intelligent, active and fun-loving, makes him a great companion, but also a destructive being when there is no one at home to keep him entertained. But, thanks to its unique personality it’s an excellent pet for those who like to talk and share time with their dogs.

Our rat terrier is scared of lawnmowers, thunder, and rain. Any loud noise. But he went nuts when he went after that rat in the garage. He chased the darn thing off. No more rat.
my first time owning a rat terrier. He is a cutie and a very stubborn creature indeed for a while I thought he was deaf. LOL I'm a senior, and I needed a low-key pup. There's nothing about him Low key. LOL when I coach him out the door he's so fast I still think he's inside. He's with me every step I take, and underfoot. He is finicky oh, I have a hard time trying in to keep him fed other than what I eat. He is funny, and very loyal, the hardest dog I've ever had to housebreak! He was 8 weeks when I got him as a gift from a friend. In June he just now gets to where he's catching on going outside to potty. He's not content night in his kennel he wants with me in my bed. Which I would rather he being a kennel. He's very frisky, and keeps me up. So the kennel is best for him and for me both. LOL. He is a sweet little dog, he is a little sidekick and I've gotten quite attached to him. I would not recommend him for a senior LOL he keeps me very busy. He is curious and and everything!
My Rattie is a loving, growly, gremlin. Never happy unless I play the gitchyer toes game. And she loves to get between my back and the couch and wiggle around like a back massager. ❤🤣👍
Best dogs on the planet IF you can put up with stubbornness and territorial barking.
My rattie loves to try to talk and sometimes I swear I hear him say mom and when I ask him about doing something he says I don't know I love my rat terrier
My rat rat says, "I don't know" and no, too! He's a mess, a theif: steals remote, socks buried in back yard, eats money dollar bills, tears up mail, rips up bathroom trash from can. He's a mess, my mess! I love him, he sleeps in bed, under covers and hates thunder.
My rat lived 18 he ate whatever I ate he was very healthy he never had any major health issues he had occasional seizures but I loved him more than anything in the world he was my best friend my son my everything losing him 💔 and I'll never get over losing him there is something about these dogs they are perfect to me I miss taking him for rides to get ice cream I hope to get another one day but I'm not sure I can handle this pain ever again
@Jimmy S omg bro that's gotta be hard mine was tan head white body I called him a big Chihuahua with muscles it's hard they are such sweet dogs very hyper but so loyal I'm never gonna be the same
@Jimmy S it's funny you mentioned sleeping under the covers since I brought him home he always went under the covers must be a rat thing
@Jimmy S I never want to see the guy who did that I'm nice guy until you hurt animals I hear a dog cry my ears perk up
You are right they are wonderful dogs . Mine is 8 now and all I can think is how will I get over him passing he really is my furry son.
@@markwhitehead1658is ur rat terrier still alive?
Don't have a choice about having a rattie. Got a rescue puppy who was a "Chihuahua mix." Did a DNA test and she came back as over 80% rat terrier. Still love her dearly. The first dog that I knew was the family dog who was 2 years old when I was born. She loved me and let me pull her tail when she would turn into a vicious monster if anyone else did. She was a good dog. I still kind of miss her. She lived to be 16, so I was 14.
I cannot live without my ratties!!!! this is how much they love me and I right back to them.
Mine runs around the hills , survived a viper bite and fight with an anteater ( took a gash to the front leg ).
Tough lil dogs.
Then a cute lil jack showed up so i took her in also , bossy lil girl .
Mine also survived several snake bites, got a chicken bone stuck in throat, and somehow had its neck titled sideways.
Where tf you live? The zoo?
@@isaaccutlip5815 LOL
My dog thinks hes bigger than he actually is, so he tries to play fight with me. Its so cute
I love rat terriers!
I adopted a chihuahua mix that turned out to be over 80 per cent rat terrier. She isn't what I expected, but I wouldn't trade her for anything. She is fun, affectionate, and the best dog I've ever had.
I have a 7mo old Decker Rat Terrier and a 7yr old one.. best dogs you can ever welcome toy our family.
yes they are best of dog in any show
I just got my daughter a puppy and she is relentless . Brave and smart . She’ll buck up to my big dogs . She is too funny . 10 foot tall but the size of a shoe lol .
Ratties are the best little dogs on Earth
I have mine last week. They're the sweetest.
Best dog ever
I Have A Rat Terrier Named Blaze, He Loves Too Hunt.
I Love my Rat Terrier, the sweetest most loving little dog!!!
Yes they are & smart too.
Well you said they were brought to the US in the 1890s, so I’m going with Roosevelt
We lost our rat terrier two years ago. he was 14 years old. his named was Otis. He was the best dog anyone can have. He was sweet, funny, and loyal Dog. He will be missed.

Awesome video
it's terrible. there are a ton of mistakes.
Omg I have a female she is my queen.my world .my everything. Is my whole life.she is perfect to me.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❣
The video says that they have no desire to please. We have had 3 and they only want to please!
I will stay up with Rico and I will watch over him!
Smiley my grandparents dog was a rat terrier I miss her so much she would’ve follow me around their farm and hang with me on their swing she was my favorite
I'll never have any other than a RAT TERRIER ✌️♓💓💓💓💓
My first dog, Roxie was a beautiful female tri-color regular sized rat terrier (not Decker a bit smaller the next size down & she was black, brown & white). She has passed but I still have my male mini Rat Terrier, Rogue who is fawn & white & so handsome! He is the 2nd to smallest size, about 10lbs & it's all muscle he's very active! Rat Terriers come in 4 sizes NOT 3 as said in video! From largest to smallest: Decker, Regular, Mini & Toy. They are so smart, funny, sweet, energetic & full of personality!❤
Standard and mini is the only one recognized by the AKC tho.
I would like to add, he is not a Barker. But when he does bark he sounds like a horn, LOL quite funny but he does wine! But he does wine, runs me crazy, LOL. All-in-all he's a very sweet little dog! He likes people and he likes the cats. All-in-all I wouldn't part with him for nothing.
C Theodore Roosevelt
Our Decker Rat learned to whistle. Don't think this is a cute thing either. She never stops
Idk about that bathing every 6 months. Definitely if they active I say monthly
I have 14 of them
Give me one please.
My (Radar) is hella tough, once he sprained his leg and he walked it off
That is such a wrong assessment. My rat terrier can lay for hours while I go into a store and be right there where I left her when I come back, she's not destructive she's not high energy for sure. Is friendly toward every human being she comes across for the most part but she's very aggressive towards dogs and cats. On a final note I also have pet rats which I had long before I got her. And is very calm around them.
All of ours have just slept when we are not at home. The current one only becomes destructive when we are home. He does it for attention.
I miss my puppies.
Teddy Roosevelt
Do one on the Mexican hairless ... Sholo but with a Z
Rico, my Rat Terrier I have had for 13 years and now he is in bad shape! I do not want to lose him! I am so scared because he is not moving, is coughing a lot and has no energy.
Mine is 14 years old. He was constantly coughing as well. The vet told me that he didn't have any infection. So, I put on him a scarf and issue solved. Mine is overweight as well. I just give him heels K/D for vet recommendation. No carbohydrates nor fat. Let me know if you need any other information.
Only 1/2 correct!

Will do. Thanks for the tip. 👍 May take a bit. We have about 30 more breeds in the pipeline. Subscribe to stay updated.😁
Always though my dog was a type of Chihuahua lol till someone referred him as a terrier.
Yeah my dog looks like a mix between a rat terrier and a whippet.
BROOOOO, so confused with Machest Terrier / Toy Manchester Terrier / Toy Fox Terrier / Rat Terrier... Which ones mine!!!!!??????
Theodore Roosevelt
ok. The Rat Terrier as a breed we know today is an all American breed. Foundation dogs such as the fox and manchester terriers are British but they are not the Rat Terrier and the dog that was brought over from the UK was not called a Rat Terrier. Chihuahua is not a true foundation breed. Whippet is. Beagle is. Perhaps in the smallest versions there might have been some Chi early on but in general no. They are velcro dogs and sensitive. Rat Terriers are the easiest dogs to train. They are not obstinate at all. Where did you get so much incorrect information?
sukie584 Because this dorks been mixing all Rat / Man / Toy Man / etc all confusing.
The English feist was the dog brought from the UK and they used them in the mining shafts. They gradually added in some beagle (for the nose) and yes, I think some whippet for speed. Teddy Roosevelt brought them to the White House to take care of the rat problem there... he had the Type B ones that have shorter legs so they are called "Teddy" RT's. The Type A have longer legs and are FAST!! Easily trained and fun, not yappy but bark when there's a reason to. Great companions and fun active dogs that will also cuddle and have an "off" button.
He was pointing out the foundation breeds of dogs of the breed, which were both incredible ratting dogs, and still are. There is some confusion as to which other breeds were added in the US, with some being definite, others hit or miss.
@@user-fe7mg5ot9z he literally says “despite its name American Rat Terrier originated in England as a result of…” It makes no mention of foundation breeds, just that other “races” 😳were added in the US. It’s a very poorly done information video on any levels.
My standard rat terrier weighs 36 pounds best damn dog in the world
I have a 1.5 year old that plucks rats out of the yard like its easy.

I love my rat terrier he is my best friend he thinks he runs the house

Best dogs ever. Sleep most of the day and all night. And fun times otherwise. Smart. But mine have the worst teeth and breath. Ugh
You must try these products: Healthy Mouth water additive will fix the bad breath and clean the teeth...it's amazing! From tobacco brown to white in about four weeks! Dr. Marty's Pro-power Plus will fix gut bacteria and make a healthy, happy dog with good bowel movements. I wish I had known of these when my guys were puppies!
Only needs a bath every six months, unless yours is like mine and likes to roll in cat poop every chance she gets.
My rattle gets brushed once a week his hair stay soft never smalls bad dentist ones a year he is in excellent health very well behaved acts like a puppy with children he is 10 yrs old loves to go bye bye
I have a ratcha and I would never own another breed
Mine was strong as shit. Her name was Lady. Small, but would probably fuck up dinosaurs. My other one, Luna. She was fat, bigger, stronger, and most important of all.. dumber.
"one of the most obstinate breeds and is hard to Train" This is WRONG! Easy to train: smart, wants to please, learns quickly. Treat training works well. If there are training problems it is because the dog must be exercised off leash to get adequate exercise. Also, you are wrong about the sizes. Look up "Decker" version.
All of this information is completely wrong. The rat terrier was bread in the United States and the dog Theodore Roosevelt had was not a rat terrier
S G it was. Your information is wrong
The larger Decker Rat Terrier was given its name by Theodore Roosevelt.
Take the brain of a cat and put it in a dog's body. You basically have a rat terrier.
i had a rattie for 2 wks that i bought from someone else. worse dog i ever had in my life. tore up my cashmere sweater, would only eat pb, starting eating the furniture etc etc. now i have a pitbull and hes the best dog ever.
Wow, that's unbelievable. Did the owner tell you of any behavior issues? Ratties are usually very intelligent, learn the rules early in household, eat dog food in a.m. and small bowl in p.m. and just want walks, playtime and loads and loads of love. Good luck with your pitbull and hope Rattie has a forever home too. Love my Rat Terrier, Addy, she's the best dog ever!!
95% of the time its the OWNER not the DOG buddy.
My rat terrier is exactly like yours, Jane Hyden
I have a shelter mix. Its destroys everything. If he knows you are looking at him he's cool. Leave him alone and any pillows, sheets, blankets, shirts will be shredded to bits. He is a mix with miniature pincher and poodle. He's a little over a year now. It seems like he is a bit better . Hopefully he'll stop soon.
Shoulda put more training into him. No dogs are untrainable
