Short Rat Terrier Description:
This is a compact dog which comes in two size varieties - the miniature and the standard. The miniature type should be 10-13 inches tall which is 25-33 cm and the standard version height should be between 13-18 inches, which is 33-45 cm. The weight can vary a lot - from 10-25 pounds which is 5-12 kg.
Rat Terriers are highly energetic and they love to explore, which can lead to a desire to escape. If your rat terrier has acces to a yard, you should make sure to have a high and secure fence, otherwise, you’ll have an escape artist on your hands.
All the hunting dogs have strong chasing instinct and the Rat Terrier is no exception. That is why it is not recommended to have your Rat Terrier off leash. Even the most well-behaved are likely to "forget" their training when they are face to face with a rat or rabbit.

I love my Ratter. He is the most loyal dog I've ever seen. Hes 17 or 18 now & still very active. I will dispute the fact that they like to escape. I know all individual dogs are different, but my dog goes down a flight of stairs to the grass area of our condominiums to use the bathroom & always returns after 1 or 2 minutes tops. He still stands over & protects my 7 yr old daughter, sleeping & has since she was born. I have a video of him doing tricks 9 years ago - DOBBY, TERRIER, WHISTLE. - He really is about 18 & still runs, jumps & barks at the door when he hears someone. Best dog breed ever.
I adopted a rat terrier from a shelter. I love to watch her run. She is very fast and agile. It's obvious she loves to run. After half a year I'm trusting her not to run away. Early on, She would run past people who came in from outside. When riding in the car. Once we came to a stop, when a door was opened, she might jump over a passenger and run away. Eventually I'd give her some running time, then drive the car around until she would come running up and jump into the opened car door. Now she wears an escape proof vest and she's on her leash in the car. She's gotten me to take up jogging. Every squeaky toy she has has gotten shaken to death with its stuffing ripped out. She's a challenge but I love her.

Everything in this video describes our rat terrier to a tee. The tendency to escape (sometimes frustrating), the extreme affection (always appreciated), the intelligence (remarkable how much smarter she is than our other dog) and her incredible skill at snaring ANY rat that dares to enter our property. What a great video! I adopted my rat terrier from a shelter, he was born in Georgia and lives with me in snowy Maine winters. His name is Ryder and he loves to play with other dogs and run in big fields. Best dog ever! He's cuddly, friendly, active and funny.

I've had several breeds of dogs including Pit bull mixes, Bouviers, Rottweilers, basset hounds and beagles. Although I loved all of them, it was the Rat terriers I had with me to get us through being homeless. We got through it together, we were a team. When you have to go through something like that, you form a bond with them. No matter what I was going through, they were always by my side.

We rescued a mix breed pup last year. After dna testing we found out she was 25% rat terrier. It really shows in her behavior and she is a wonderful family pet. We love her so much!

My rat terrier "Knotthead" is 14 years old or so and when he sees a rabbit now he just looks at it and thinks "I'm to old for that shit".

This dog breed is more rare than you might think. With only about 7 large breeders across the US. My great uncle being one of them and I was lucky enough to receive my Ratter from him. They are extremely loyal and smart dogs. My by far favorite breed

My rattie is lazy and loves her naps. She loves to chase squirels in the yard but other than that she is a lazy diva who loves a fluffy blanket haha. Ratties are the best though, seriously
oh also she isn't an escape artist at all thank god...but she will try to sneak out of the door if you leave it open for more than 3 seconds lol

My little rat terrier at 8 weeks " Sam" the tri-colored one in my profile photo. Love ❤ him so much!
He is such a joy! And yes loves to Chase, loves to run, he's very smart, We play find the treat under the three cups after I shuffle them. He is only allowed to use his paw to show me which one. He wins every time! We play a game with a flag on a stick, I twirl it around and he does flips. Loves that game. But his favorite thing of all time is to show me that he knows how to count. I ask him to do 3 Twirls. He does 3. I asked him to do 5 Twirls. He does 5. I know I couldn't believe it myself. I wish I could show everybody his video

the american definition of a working dog is funny :D but at least they are cute
They are good hunters, but they can not compare with Malinois or Dutch shepherds as working dogs (but who can :D)

@@mirandascoool the FCI ( that is the Organisation that says what dog breed is an official breed and what "breed" is not ) categorises breeds in groups sheepdogs
huntingdogs workdogs and otherdogs most dogs are huntingdogs including the rat Terrier
workingdogs are breeds for protection german doberman is an exzellent example so not even my 35 KG Malinois is a workingdog its a sheepdog so by Definition the rat Terrier is not a Workingdog no Terrier is 😊 hopefully that helps to make clear what im talking about when i say a rat Terrier is not a working dog
