I think the reason you like blue in your white shadows is because your brain defaults to outdoor lighting for reference, where direct light is yellowish, and shadows are blue because of the ambient light from the sky. I think your color palette reflects that as well, so instead of red simply losing brightness when shaded, you add blueness contribution from the sky ambient light. That’s why they look more natural and pleasing than the other palettes.
but.. hes just sliding it around ina specific way everytime.. litterally anyone could do that if they knew how he did it, which i assume you do since you watched the video
@ST whats the difference of knowing how to do it and being able to do it in this case ?-? its not like adjusting some color sliders requires a high amount of technical skill
Pixel art color pallettes seems simple and effortless, but learning it can help with color theory knowledge and how to create smooth shades of colors that can be applied in other complex digital painting. Ps. sliding around color wheels may seems easy, but color choices and the way you interpret lighting in relation to the object and shades of color is not as easy as it seem, but also not too difficult to master. At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong to art, enjoy the process 😁
i think that happens when you've been playing and working with the hues and saturations of colors for the most part of your life; that's experience right there

This is the first tutorial I'v seen on youtube where somebody didn't waste time enjoying themselves gloat about data that didn't matter, and just got right to the point. Thank you bay.
This was so useful! I already heard about this many many times, but i always did it wrong: i made the saturation lower for lighter colors and higher for darker colors. It makes so much more sense to have the base color be more saturated and lower it both ways!
Oh gosh this helped me so much. I was starting of with just adjusting the black and whites and maybe just randomly choosing colors close to is out of randomness. Thank goodness for people like you.
I just wanted to thank you for teaching how to make a colour pallette. And thanks for NOT rushing it!!!! It finally makes sense! I've watched SOOOO many tutorials and they didn't make sense!!
I think a reason why your color choice looks good is because it actually looks like light is hitting it. It feels more immersive . Thanks for the tutorials, they are all really helpful! :)
One of the best Pixel Art Basics tutorials on youtube. For lazy or dull-witted people like me, who have to watch this video over and over again: Pyxel edit gives you automatically a suitable shading palette for a color you pick. Nice!
That's a good way for understand the colors, because we see the warm colors like a sunny day (more light) and the cold colors like a cold night (less light).
Just wanted to say this is an awesome tutorial - very easy to understand and apply and useful for all kinds of shading, not just pixel art. I've been linking this left and right everywhere where people ask for color advice.
mort, your channel helped me learn pixel art so much faster than i thought i would (especially the outline video and this one), i just wanna thank you for the excellent quality content my guy
thanks for explaining the color schemes I had no idea how to pick colors for so long then i saw your video and it helped a lot! thank you so much. Also your a pretty funny guy. Great video!

I was trying to learn pixel art before and have done some project. Now I have thing to do for my exams and all, this is really a distressing hobby and I'm progressing in it. Thank you for you content, even if this video and some others are quite old, it ages well.
Recently, I've been shifting my color ramps so that as the value increases, so does the saturation instead of the mid tones being the highest in saturation. I think it's gonna become my go to trick with 99% of my pieces. Creates a moody, pastel look.
Thanks for making these tutorials. After watching them my pixel art improved a lot and I published a game that for the first time looked good. Thank You.
I prefer increasing the saturation for darker colors and shadows as it makes the dark colors deeper, and reduce the saturation for brighter colors. Both works and just result in different styles. I see some people mixing how they hue shift their colors as well. Abysswolf tends to shift the colors in the reverse way (brighter colors more to the left, darker to the right) but only on clothing and the regular way on skin. There are lots of ways to do this but anything is better than single hue color ramps.
Yeah there really is a ton of ways to do it! :o ~ A lot of it also comes down to what you're going for, this is just how I sort of go about it tho & to awnser my twitch viewers question ^^; Maybe I could dig deeper into the various styles in another video showing the different results! :'3
mnrART Yeah of course!!I'm very glad you're still doing videos as well^^ I'm sorry to ask but what kinds of videos are coming?I guess Pixel Art and Flash? Just asking haha I'm just excited for them ahah
It's going to be a bit of everything yeah, ^^;Pixel Art, Useful WorkFlow & Techniques, Game development is also something I plan on now that it's my free time passion. So mostly in that way, who knows I might have a few Flash things now and then too :PI'll most likely have an update video coming up soon where I just talk about the comeback and what I've planned :')
I feel like those pixel color palettes are reminiscent of NES style graphics. Which is cool, but I guess I prefer a combination of pastel and hot versions of colors. I feel like it gives you ability to draw texture (hot colors for shiny things, pastel colors for more of a matte finish).
im new to pixel art though i have spent the last week working on a game using the beginner method. now i feel like i have to redo everything cause his palette was soo god damn nice
Go to the colder colors - light => darker. Go to the warmer colors + light => brighter I think I get it. It's actually genius. I would never figure that out on my own.
In the first example, these color are not wrong, they are just poorly picked on the shading gradient (but the lemon is definitely wrong of course). simply add more contrast and they're gud. You see color schemes and in general color palettes defines a style, yours is more hmmm... aseprity, but the left one can be a colorful one, as well as other styles, such as pastel, dark, intense, balanced, old, etc...
+Mort - mnrART Ork jo for pokker Morten! :-)
For your first example where you use fruits, I actaully preffer the highly saturated one! This is supposed to be a appealing item, and decreasing the saturation on this just makes it look really dull and like paper. I would argue color use has way more to do with art style and theme of your project, rather. But this video should still serve as a nice beginners video.
from the tutorials that I have read about colors, yours was the one that I understood. And if you don't mind me asking, would you do another tutorial about shadings? Thank you.
so... Question XD. You mentioned you think of your darker as your purple-bluish and your white or brighter colors as a yellowish so; what do you do when you are wanting highlights of yellow or darker shades for purple/blue colors? But to be honest I can't really give a answer that will make you happy in ever saturation. And like everything else, try and play around with it, there are 3 sliders you can change on, so make a few copies and try a bit of everything an go with what looks best to you! :D The cool thing about being Creative, there is nothing wrong or right! :D for an example I like to desaturated my shades, but a lot would not agree with me on that, but thats what I think looks nice, and luckily there is no rules for all this stuff! Sure there are principals and theory's but in the end, it's all up to you!
Thank you so much for the tutorial :D I would always wonder how people got good colours, I would never manage to do it so I started taking colours from pictures
your tecnique is the best, becuase I see al ot of tutorial of this ,but lots of theory ,you create a pallet slicing the hue-value-sataruration with clever searching the mood... thx
It doesn't really matter on you "pallete" honestly, I can make a kirby pink and it looks good, and then I can make it a green and still look good. I can use bright colors, and I've never seen somebody vomit from bright colors (unless there flashing.) But really if you like the color u choose, use it.
Pick a color is the most difficulties when I pixel. I use HSV and I read about color theory, saturation and value, hue shifting, everthing. Before when I was pixel something, I always pick a color, change the hue, reduce saturation and add more value for lights color and for dark I increase the saturation and add more value. I usually do a 3 ~ 5 color ramp and notices that the colors contrast always was strong, then an friend told me not make a huge difference between colors value (When I take 3 color for example, I always make the difference between the values to high than I never noticed about it) like the source of light was to close to the object. Now I try to make the difference more low than before. I try you method, but I didn't get a nice result.
I think the reason you like blue in your white shadows is because your brain defaults to outdoor lighting for reference, where direct light is yellowish, and shadows are blue because of the ambient light from the sky. Apt. Very apt.
When he "hurries" and makes a way better palette than you ever could.

Thats why most believe going to college for something like art isn't the best idea, as its generally something that can be learnt in your own time.
