Hey Maya, I'm going on holiday with my boyfriend who is Caucasian and just wondered if you had any tips for taking pics natural lighting or sunny places?
Thanks Maya, Erica, and Mariam!!! I wish more photographers knew this!!! I’m a youtuber and photographer and it’s sooo important to have appropriate lighting and to know how the light source affects your subjects from things that cast shadows, to having sufficient lighting for each complexion, to how to use reflectors. White boards can really help - and silver gold can be really helpful for reflectors as well 👌🏾 And different color clothes and backdrops are so impactful👏🏾 I’ve never heard of sharegrid, thanks for sharing; I’ll look it up. Natural light is everything. Thank you for always teaching us! Your tech tips have taught me sooo much! God bless you 👏🏾❤️😘 I’m in SHOCK that those lights are portable - I’m in LOOOOOOOVE!!! I have two umbrella lights that suck but I can’t afford anything better so I’m entering your awesome giveaway now! 🥰🙏🏾😘 Thank you so much!!! ❤️ Fernelle
Shameless Maya exactly!!! Or Santa photos - where Santa looks great, but our kids look so dark you can’t even see their facial features (literally). Lighting is crucial to having good quality images and video. 😘👏🏾❤️ I love your honesty and energy Maya 😘 Fernelle
Love love love love this. So helpful! I usually shoot natural lighting, so my easiest way to compliment people's skin tone is by using a gold reflector on brown skin, and a silver reflector on white skin. I love how it compliments each one.
You have to acknowledge undertones though. I'm brown skin with a cool undertone so gold doesn't work for me. Silver is best for me. I'm not trying to argue or anything; I'm just sharing and hoping that I am helping.
Awesome tips! Lighting is so fascinating as an architecture student we're always thinking about how light will play in spaces - too much light and placement of light can affect mood, work ethic, circadian rhythm etc, and even in video/filmmaking we're thinking about how light can be shaped in images. One of my tips for lighting would just be to have fun with it and experiment learn what looks best with your face and depending on what look you're going for it can be dramatic or not! Fingers crossed to the give away need a new lighting setup for my college apartment/studio!
Hi!!!! I have been following you for years now and you have inspired me in a multitude of ways including how to be me, stay true, and be shameless!!! But I’ll cut to the chase, my boyfriend and I are trying to start a UA-cam channel very soon and we’re working on some stuff like content, music, video and audio, and especially lighting and what’s so crazy is that this video could not have come at a more perfect time! We’ve decided to start a UA-cam channel for a couple of reasons but one of the main ones is that when we go on UA-cam, we don’t see enough couples that represent a couple like ours, we are a gay interracial couple and we want to share our lives with others on platforms such as UA-cam and Instagram so that when young kids, teens, adults look at our channel, they are inspired to love and live authentically just as they are. We both needed a UA-cam channel like the one we are in the process of creating when we were little and still figuring things out, but it’s never too late to be hope for others. These lights would be the most perfect edition to our dream channel, thank you for providing this content that honestly no one really talks about because I know that we weren’t even thinking about the lighting and how it’s going to hit both of our complexions differently, we’re like a chocolate chip cookie, he’s the chocolate part and I’m the cookie part☺️🍪 I have watched all your videos and I cannot wait to implement all that I have learned from all your tech talks videos into our upcoming channel, thank you for everything😁
Dear Maya, I don't know if anyone has told you but I think you should create online courses for photography and video! You're a great teacher who is engaging to watch and listen to, and I would love to see you soar as an educator. You give your audience so much and I think it's only right for you to have additional income streams for your hopes and dreams :) I just started learning photography and your older tutorials are definitely a go-to when I forget or can't understand something. Thank you for using your gifts to bless others. Prayers for more success and opportunities to shine and share your wisdom and expertise. xoxo.
Love how you quickly and effectively give great how to tips! I've heard such great things about Aputure from a ton of videographers. Looking forward to trying it one day on personal projects! Would have been great to have for this impromptu dance video my friend and I did the other evening.
I don’t know if you did a tech talk on audio recording, but if have maybe can we get an updated one? Thanks for always being amazing!! Also where do you get your backdrops from?
You can always buy used on amazon if you don’t have the equipment. But I was just trying to see if an off white background would be better for darker skin.
This is so helpful! Cause then when I begin recording I can have options on how to do so. I get afraid to do videos at night because of the lack of lighting.. but now I know. Thanks for this & hosting the contest!
Wow! Thanks! This was very...enlightening! LOL!!! Sorry for that pun! But, shooting on the go a lot(music videos, skits, weddings, clubs...etc.,) I am always at the mercy of other people or things controlling my lights! So, I normally focus on my lens and finished up on post! I might just have to invest in lights! That'll be a game changer for me!!
Oh man, I would LOVE to win these lights😩😩😩 I’m currently figuring out different filming spaces, but my lighting is the main problem. 🙏🏽🙏🏽this is what I need💓
OMG Maya!! This is excellent advice, especially the stuff about reflecting light using a board (as a college student, I'm on a budget, so anywhere where I can save is a Godsent 😂😩). I appreciate this so much ❤️ I was wondering if you had any advice on the best lighting for filming videos that have rapid movement i.e. dance videos?
Great work guys, but Shameless, can I ask where you get your background music from? I've heard popular free music channels here on youtube who allow folks to download their music for free now can someday sell their rights to a bigger companies and boom! "copyright strike!", he will be chilling in the Caribbean someday(retired) while he makes away with a vault of youtube content provider's lifelong hardwork. Check the guy at Think Media out, he mentioned falling a victim of this once.
You can rent equipment, including professional cameras from the library! Maybe not all libraries, but many have all kinds of stuff you can check out, including sewing/embroidery machines, crock pots and even gaming systems. Most people rarely go to the library anymore, so this isn't really common knowledge. 😒
Photography advice: I want a better light situation. Soon after I finished this. I pulled up amazon. But $750 is not feasible for me. Anyone have any advice.
Shameless Maya Oh, believe me; I entered. All the ways I could. But I may not win, which is understandable. I’m still going to need lighting advice though.
There is an interesting article about lighting for dark skin. If you have the time, it may be worth the read www.mic.com/articles/184244/keeping-insecure-lit-hbo-cinematographer-ava-berkofsky-on-properly-lighting-black-faces
Thanks so much for all the love boos! Glad it is helping some of you light your subjects better. Don't forget to enter the GIVEAWAY! 🙌🏾

Works for photography as well. The lighting principles in relation to skin tone are the same.
Thanks Maya, Erica, and Mariam!!! I wish more photographers knew this!!!
